We bought antibiotics for ear infections from chemist instead of going to doctors after previous incidents of paying doctors then chemist. Had no problems buying them as long as you know name of tablets you need to take. Be careful if any one is allergic to penecillin because this happened to my other half in Lanzarote, bought antibiotics from chemist and he had bad reaction to them and ended up in hospital for 3 days.

Hi
I was advised to take antibiotics with me on my holiday as it was not long after I had medical treatment and I had to be careful not to get an infection via bites, cuts etc on my arm,
I explained to the GP what the hospital had advised re antibiotics and she issued a prescription.
In the end I didnt have to use them, but I didnt have the worry of visiting Doctor abroad if something had gone wrong.

Whilst we cannot give medical advice on the forums I can tell you that amoxycillin is the same name in Spain as it is in the UK as it is the generic name and not a branded name.

If you asked for amoxycillin they'd know what you wanted. Best thing to do is get some from the Gp before you go, safer all around.

It's called Amoxicilina in Spain.
amoxycillin

It's no longer spelt that way in the UK.

Yes ! do NOT take Amoxicillin if you are allergic to penicillin or to any other penicillin type antibiotic.
I have bought Amoxicilina in Spain for the hubby and a different antibiotic for me (Doxiciclina) because I'm allergic to penicillin AND because I know this is what my GP always prescribes ME for certain illness's, but never once have I been asked if I'm allergic to penicillin and never once have I been asked if I'm on the contraceptive pill..Ok I'm probably too old for the last question, but there is a low risk that Amoxicillin interfers with the contraceptive pill and you could come back from holiday with more than you went with.
If there's a queue behind you in the Farmacia, I doubt everyone will ask you these questions.

also I'd recomend buying some swimear. Just add a few drops to your ears after swimming and it soaks away any excess water! You can usually buy it on the plane but we've also found it in BodyCare! and most likely Boots!

I also forgot to add that depending where you go in Spain, you may have no choice but to see the doctor before you can get any antibiotics.

Some farmacia's are adhering to the new laws regarding forbidding selling antibiotics over the counter and others are not....this can be between the different farmacia's within the same resort or between neighbouring resorts/different parts of Spain/Islands.
So, whilst they may be cheaper in Spain if you can buy them over the counter, they won't be cheaper if you have to consult a doctor first.

Ooooo, I stand corrected..... twice. Close enough though, I'm sure the Spanish farmacia would know what you wanted.

As you can guess, I leave it up to my GP to decide if I need antibiotics or not. ;)

Every year without fail my husband ends up with an ear infection. This year we were saved from having to see the doctor as we got friendly with a family who had antibiotic drops with them. I would definately be prepared next time and get our own GP to prescribe medication to take with us- better to have it and not use it, than visa versa.

My son used to suffer terribly from ear infections when he was younger. He went to the doctor once before going away, to see if he could get some anti-biotics to take away with him in case of another infection. The doctor obliged but fortunately they weren't needed.

2 years ago he was badly bitten by mosquitoes in Corfu and had to have a long course of antibiotics on his return. Luckily, he was only away for a week because by the time he got home there was a hell of a state on his leg-badly infected bites and the leg was swollen to almost twice its size. It really was bad. As a result, he was a bit wary about this summer's holiday so took a trip to the GP to ask for anti-biotics to take with him just in case. He was especially worried as he was going for 2 weeks this time. The GP had all his records, stating what had happened last year but refused him the anti-biotics. He said giving antibiotics in case something happened wasn't something he was prepared to do :think

So bear in mind, your GP might not be willing to prescribe them.

as Sanji says, different resorts have different policies.
i have never been able to buy amoxycillin in lloret, but in malgrat i have had no problems.
as i usually pick up a chest infection every year i just buy my antibiotics in malgrat for €3.20 and if they go out of date i just get the local chemist to dispose of them.
it's still cheaper than going to the quack here.
