Hi
I hope someone can advice us. we are off to the Dominican republic next week and the last time I was there we took $ which were happily accepted for tips and paying for trips etc.
I went into the travel agents today and nearly fell over when she said that it was $1.33 to the pound she said that we might be better off getting dominican pesos instead. How much do you tip if paying in pesos, (we would normally tip anything from $1 to $5 on average depending on the service provided ie drinks $1, service at restaurant $3 to $5 etc?) Does anyone know if I just take sterling and exchange it will I get a better exchange here before leaving or wait and exchange it in the Dominican.
I have dollars left over from a previous holiday and I initially thought about using them and just replacing them when we go to florida later in the year but I am now left thinking that it might be wiser to hold onto them as we got them when it was $2 to the £1.
Hi keanda,
By the way which part of the Dom. Rep are you going to?
We are regular visitors to the Dom. Rep, so lets see how much I can help you.
Concerning tipping, we always tip in pesos, 20/50pesos for drink waitresses, 50pesos in the restaurant for waiter,as you say depending on service.
I would take a few pesos with you until you find your feet and take the rest in ££££ and change once there, you will get a better exchange rate. Not at hotel reception though only at money exchange outlets.
Do you have your $$$$ for Tourist Card on entry and Departure tax.I would hang onto your $$$ regarding giving them as tips, its also better tipping in pesos as they dont have to change the $$into pesos and loose in the exchange rate themselves, receiving their own currency is better for them.
Hope this helps
Angie.

Hi Angie and thanks for answering my questions. We are going to Bavaro. You mention that we will get a better exchange rate at the exchange outlets and not the hotel reception, do you know if there are many around that area? We were last there a few years ago and other than the trips we stayed within the hotel complex. I appreciate the tipping advice also, I think it will take me a bit of time to get used to working out the values of the currency in comparison to the pound though.
We will take dollars with us to pay for the tourist card and departure tax though.
Thanks again it is appreciated.
