After an enjoyable holiday abroad, Cyprus my wife and I, on the coach to the airport, were told our flight would be delayed for a couple of hours, wrong, we were informed much later that all passengers on flight ???? would be going to different hotels all over the island because of technical difficulties to the jet, this was on a wednesday evening.
Due to this delay, I lost two days wages, and my luggage disappeared, leaving me to walk around in the clothing I donned on leaving our holiday hotel. All reps informed of the loss of the luggage.
On alighting at Manchester airport, Friday morning, I visited the left luggage department and found my case, battered and valuables missing (I took some pics for future reference) my case had been run over by something big, no!! not a dinosaur, the muddy tyre marks very visible.
Our insurance was covered by Direct Travel Insurance. I filled the claim forms in, ie, flight delay, loss of two days wages (with letter from my company to verify this) and valuables(with receipts). I received £10:00p for the delay, a fiver each. I telephoned today, 25th November, asking about the rest of my claim, the abrupt person on the other end of the line, informed me that I was not entitled to anything else because the valuables was not in my hand luggage, (if they were, I suppose they would have told me I should have taken better care of it) nothing about my loss of earnings.
I asked could I speak to someone higher in authority, she informed me he was not at his desk. So now she is sending a form out for me to express my disgust etc. has this happened to anyone else?.
As Briar has stated above if you have Personal Possession cover on your household policy, this is All Risk cover in and away from the home and you should be able to claim for the loss.

Insurance will pay out a certain amount for delays, it is written in their policies terms and conditions. They dont cover for loss of earnings.

Our insurance covered for our 3 night delay on our return journey from Menorca at £12 per 12 hours after the first 12 hours.
We should have arrived back home at circa 5:10am Thursday morning

I was to start my shift at 9:00am that day and the same Friday.
We never had any decent sleep, early hours Thursday morning we were taken to our hotels and stayed there till the evening, we finally arrived home on Friday morning, shattered.

I had recently bought a video camera for our hols, this was in a small case with charger and other bits and a small compact camera. The suit case had been run over, when I reported this to the police, the officer said that this was not the first time this had happened with suitcases.
Sorry to hear of your problem. We recently had no luck trying to claim for a lost holiday and the more I read I am amazed at just how much is NOT insured! Perhaps there needs to be a section which covers:
I agree with Presto - the problem is that we seem to have an Insurance Policy - excuse the pun - as one size fits all. I accept that there needs to be terms and conditions but expecting people - without specialist knowledge - to plough through acres of small print and try to understand it in my opinion an unfair practice. Nuff Said!
As an a-side. Should Travel Agents be selling insurance when I am sure that the people on the desk really are NOT trained to give proper advise about the 'small print' and the particulars of every case.
Is there any point having 'free insurance' if the person selling it to you - or giving it to you really has NO idea, or to be fair, has not been properly trained re the terms and conditions. At the end of the day - when the tour operators sell insurance they sell the 'underwriters insurance' NOT their own ............ mmmmm ........ food for thought, but seriously, 'Holiday Truths' would a site that warns re what you need to look out for and need to be aware of re insurance, be useful! (Ie the idiots guide to insurance policies .... what is NOT insured!). Don't know what you think, but it could be useful to 'Joe Public' ..................... having lost a £1,500 holiday we are desperate to make sure that folks out there KNOW what to look out for in SIMPLE TERM??

It has been stated in the travel industry that consultants are going to be offered the chance to sit an insurance examination, with a qualification certificate being provided on passing.
However, sales by travel agency staff are apparently not within the remit of the FSA - yet. So shop around, and visit a regulated broker.
At the end of the day holiday 'buyers' need to be aware that travel agents are trained to sell HOLIDAYS - NOT insurance!
When travel agents offer insurance it's NOT 'their' policy they sell ..... even if it has their name on the front It is infact the 'underwriters' who deal with claims and they are the ones who really know the terms and conditions ! If you need any clarification when you book, whatever you do don't take the travel agents / person who sells you the holiday's word as THE proper answer! CHECK the small print when your documents come or ring the insurance company.
Sorry, we're sort of off topic again ...................... This may sound really basic stuff, but we want to keep 'shouting the message' to as many folks as possible ........... I'm sure that when people book insurance they think, in good faith that lots of things are covered. It's only when, like the writer of this original artical discovered, when you come to claim, that you find that in too many cases there seems to be a 'get out clause'!

I agree with Presto. Two years ago we booked a holiday with an Agent, and agreed to take their insurance. (which wasnt free). We told the Agent that our 9 year old son had just been diagnosed as an insulin dependent diabetic, and asked her to inform the Insurance Company. She phoned me later to inform me that the policy had been sorted. When we received the paperwork I rang the insurance company to check that that my sons illness had been incorporated into the policy, and they knew nothing about his illness, and furthermore told me that if he had been ill whilst we were away we wouldnt have been covered. When I rang the Agent who I had originally booked with she denied that I had mentioned it in the first place! Thank goodness I checked. We now book with a local insurance company who know all our requirements and also are a lot cheaper.
Insurance companies do not pay out on expensive items in your hold luggage, these really should be kept with you at all times.
They also do not pay out for loss of earnings for delays just set amounts listed out in the terms and conditions. They dont ask for your earnings when you take out the policy so how would they know what their liability is ? Also Insurance premiums for higher earnewrs would be greater than for lower earners. I dont think this is the insurance company using a get out clause.
Arriving home at 0510, collecting luggage going through passport control, getting home even if live close then planning to be at work at 0900 doesnt seem to me to take account of even minimal delays and any insurance company that was going to pay out for loss of earnings of that day would look at the probability of delays ( weather, air traffic, mechanical ) and probably would have charged an excessive premium.

On renewal I always check with my house insurance company to ensure that my cameras/camcorder is covered under the all risks section, even then I don't take a holdall as cabin luggage, I take the camcorder bag and everything else goes in with it. Saying that, My waterproof housing goes in the case and cost nigh on the same amount as the camcorder.
Despite assurances from the house insurance company, I have my doubts about how far they would wriggle, but luckily have not had to find out.
I have also heard in the past that whereas travel insurance companies want video evidence of you purchasing valuables and suffering the loss, many of the home insurance companies are easier to deal with, however it is always a changing market and I now have to learn an Indian dialect to get the same rapport with my company.
So assuming you have contents insurance for your house, that has to be your best bet for the damage and loss Good Luck
My daughter broke her finger (minor accident, I know. But all the same) the week before we went. I called up Abbey to ask if this would affect the policy if any claims were made.
They told me that if her finger required additional attention whilst away this would not be covered but the policy was otherwise intact.
Hope that makes sense.
