so if you all think Lesters comments are so fuuny why do you all go back

Well the truth of the matter is a lot of people will not be going back. There are still beautiful parts of Goa but that's not the point, the warts are becoming massive sores. I think that at present it's 50/50 ratio of good and bad, if things get worse maybe it will not be worth it.

I'd go back but at the right price.... time to discover new horizons.

We feel the same way.

We have been going to Goa since 1999 and have enjoyed each trip, however, our last trip in December 2007 made us realise that perhaps we ought to think about going elsewhere.

We have looked at returning in December this year or February next year but the cost of returning to our favourite hotel (whether we go through someone like First Choice or go independently) has made us realise that although we love the place, we don't want to spend that sort of money. I think that if most of us were honest, one of the main reasons why we keep returning is because it is so cheap.

Because,we have been coming every year since 1993 and long stay since 1997, and have built up so much infrastructure such as bike, scooter, furniture, tv, satellite, fridge/freezer etc etc. As the place got worse and worse, we have hung on praying for an improvement that has never come. Four years ago we moved to Siolim hoping that getting out of mainstream tourism would help....and it has, a bit. But still we have to live with the rubbish, corruption, visa issues, greed from local businesses, cheating etc, in fact the rubbish here is very bad as shack workers bring a black bag with them at night and chuck it on Siolim hill on their way home. Goan re-cycling means chuck it where someone else lives.
Finally we are on the verge of giving up the hopeless fight and selling all our belongings to move on, maybe the Philippines?
A post like Lester's at least gives us a laugh, yours most certainly did not, but thank you for sharing it with us anyway...........

Such a shame, there are very few places in this world that are so friendly.
its still cheap to do everything there. you can go to quieter places than the likes of Baga, Calangute and Candolim etc. :que
yes, the local traders are trying to get more out of the tourist, but that just makes me bargain harder, most of the time its not that much dearer than the year before, they have inflation too y'know . ;)
how many of people on this forum have tried south goa? very different from the north!!! or have you been put off by those who have said the south is TOO quiet, maybe everyone should make up their own mind rather than accepting other peoples views (if that is what you're doing) You may be pleasantly surprised!!!:tup

ive just read those newspaper reports and was shocked! i have only been to goa once and it was this year so i dont have the memories that others have about the way it used to be but i certainly wasnt put off by going again, in fact im desperate to get back there!!! i understand their view about the alcohol abuse and drug culture, that happens all over the world!

i do believe in the phrase "when in Rome", Goa is what it is, the more westerners go there, the place will change around that! Just as Britain has changed around the diverse cultures that have come here! things change and evolve, Goa is no different! it is a shame that there are extremists that wish for women to cover up,or are offended by westerners wearing their religious icons but then lest we not forget that this country has the BNP!

Goa is wonderful, i experienced the north goa, the south goa and karnataka! every day was spectacular and i have been telling everyone who will listen to try it!

Turkey is the same with sellers trying to rip people off! it happens in britain, it happens all over the world!

just my humble opinion :)

Am I missing something but what is silly about the emergence of a group in India called "Hindu Taliban" ?

Not sure if you query the term "silly" because you think that this is a serious threat or because you think that they are not silly but justified.
If the former, then I called them silly because I think that they are probably not a serious threat but a bit of a joke, and if the second then I would class them as having serious motives but completely out of touch.
Hope this clarifies my terminology.

sorry I find it difficult to understand the point you are trying to make, the views on any organisation which the goan people are trying to keep out of the state should be treated with respect, to state they are silly shows a total lack of understanding of the politics of goa and india.

We all know Goa is a bit cockeyed when it comes to officialdom - money speaks louder than ethics - just the way it is. We certainly won't change it but I agree it often rankles.

But hey, I've just read my newspaper and find I'm buying porno films for minister's husbands, ministers are juggling with houses to screw the most out of tax-payers, the top cop is wandering around London with top secret files on show, we've not got enough money to educate sixth formers and every British child is born owing £20,000 because of the mess we're in. :yikes

The words stones and glass houses spring to mind.

Quite true Roma and although I agree with the sentiment if Silentmans comments above can I just ask the question "Does [u ANYBODY [/u]understand the politics of Goa/India" ? :que - I found Lesters list funny because although these things are annoying at times, they are also about the quirkiness of Goa.

Whatever we may think about the place and it's politics ............Goa certainly is unique :) Fizz
