Thanks for the advice Madge. Mine sometimes tingles and I worry because it says that if any itching occurs, to take it off immediately. I once washed colour off before allowing the full developing time and I turned out orange :really

Your head shouldn't really itch when getting it died, that's a sure sign of a reaction. Darker colours are more prone to reactions than lighter ones as they have different chenmicals.

mine has allways itched i suppose its more of an irritating tingle i have a blonde tint on ive had the same for years but taking antihistamine really releaves it for me

the first time this happened to me was when i had my hair highlighted in turkey, hubby didnt believe me so put a tiny bit on his fringe lol and within 1 min removed it he couldnt cope with the itching, i said to the hair dresser my head feels like ants crawling all over it, he said thats ok normal, well ever since then ive had terrible problems and it gets so itchy i cant bare it, its ok with foils as long as my scalp isnt touched, i can now get this with certain shampoos too. now i dont know whether its a coincidence or whether what ever that hair dresser did really has caused me long term problems , as i had never had that problem before then grrrrr :duh

I'm a retired hairdresser. You should have no reaction, if it itches, the peroxide is either too strong and you need a weaker one or you are allergic. A strand test at the nape of your neck is usually done prior to colouring and is left on 24 hrs. If you have are allergic this will confirm with a reaction to that particular part of your scalp.

Heres one for you all, I used to have my hair dyed with a semi permanant colour, until now, over a year ago, I had my usual dark brown colour by a hair stylist that was covering mine (she was off sick) at hair cuttery, my local salon, after I had it done maybe 1 week later my scalp was red roar, and itching like mad, It was unbearable, went docs and they told me I had a reaction or it could be scorisis? had the damn thing for nearly a year, this was last year, its now gone, however I am wanting to have my hair done this saturday with lowlights, as I believe these are better, and more natural, but 1 the cost, or 2 do I need a skin test? or should I just go for it on saturday, scared to death that the reaction will come back. the lowlights I want are half head, maybe caramals with darker undertones, my hair is a boring brown, with fleks of new grey hair, I dont have anymore colour on my hair, any tips help would be great, I want to really go for it , so I can be prepared for my hols in august.

Hya kazza, I'm a hairdresser and you should be perfectly ok with your caramel highlights as long as they are done in foils or meches as the coulour shouldn't actually touch your scalp, your stylist should aim to get them as close to the root as possible without touching the head . the salon should really get you in for a skin test a couple of days prior to this just to be on the safe side.
Don't forget to use a protective spray on your colour in fuengirola, you know how hot it is when you go !!
have fun !!

Ive recently started getting this itchy scalp thing :( when having my colour put on. Its one of the ones that lasts 20 washes. It itches for a couple of days after having it done and then tends to calm down. I have told my hairdresser who is great and she seemed really concerned as she said once it starts happening it's the begining of problems and doesn't usually go away on its own and means she will have to start trying different things. She sort of reckons that once you have become allergic to a particular product that is more or less it for that one. We had been using it for about 3 years, every 7 to 8 weeks. :que

She always asks the girl who does the washes to make sure she washes thoroughly so I dont think any is being left on the scalp.

It was quite a relief to read these posts as I though I was the only one. :rofl

I've been dyeing my hair for most of my life, and when the grey came through I used to dye mine using a permanent dark brown shade, and slowly the hair shaft grabbed more and more dye, which resulted in nearly black hair.
I looked like mystic meg (I had the same hair style) or an old aged gothic and it just made the grey roots show up even more.
Solution...go get it all cut off and now I just "wash and go"
I feel like I've been released from my chains...and I like to think that the grey makes me look distinguished, never old. :tut

Seriously, some of the chemicals in hair dyes are pretty dangerous stuff and they are banned in some European countries, they get away with still putting them in hair dyes that are produced in America because of some old legislation regarding coal tar, and the warnings on the packet to keep off the skin and instructions telling you to immediately rinse off ...yet they are shipped around the world for sale.

Once you become sensitised to something like Ammonia in hair dyes, you will also be sensitised to other products containing Ammonia, like household cleaners, and the biggest culprit in dark permanent dyes is a substance called PDD(p-phenylenediamine) it's toxic, an allergen and transdermal, which means it passes through the skin layers on the scalp and is absorbed into the blood stream, where it becomes a potential carcinogen.
There's a lot of blood vessels in your scalp, that's why when you have a very small cut, it bleeds as though you've just been hit with an hatchet.

When PDD is added to henna to make it jet black for these temporary tattoos, it can cause an allergic reaction with horrific "chemical burns" and scars.
If your scalp is starting to tingle/itch/burn, you already are or you're becoming sensitised to something in the product and don't let anybody tell you any different.!
It may not happen straight away and just because you've used a product several times before without any adverse reaction, it doen't mean it will be safe for a lifetime and this is where people ignore the warnings to do a strand test before slapping it all over their hair/scalp.

Now I know some of you will be thinking " here she goes again", and I could post some links with medical jargon that some of you wouldn't understand or bother to read, so I'll post this one ...what it says is true.
It won't stop you all from dyeing your hair this instance, but it might make some of you think about it in the future.!
