Katy, I would get straight back to the owners and ask them to find you suitable accommodation to replace theirs. It is people like them that give us a bad name. Occasionaly things do go wrong but you booked in good faith, it looks like the owners knew they were going to sell, therefore it is down to them to honour your booking even if it means paying a little more for better accommodation!

Hi Wanakalou

The spanish chap who let us down has a friend who has an apartment in the same block (at £150 more for exactly the same size place) so we've asked him to try and do us a deal. As yet no reply so if no joy tomorrow we put the pressure on!! Thanks for your reply, do you rent properties?

If it's exactly the same, he owes it to you to pay 'his friend' the difference! He has not only let you down but you have paid out for fares that you may not be able to get a refund on if he can't find you somewhere else.

Unfortunately my apartments full.

I agree and he has given us the web site (which we've looked at) for his friend and it seems genuine as it's not the same as his, just thought we'd give him a few days to get a discount sorted before we approached them direct. My husband spent 10 years in Spain letting out properties so we shall see what happens - let you know!!

hi Wanakalou
Just to let you know that after a bit of bartering we've got the other apartment for what we were going to pay - result! Thanks for your concern and let this be a warning to anyone thinking of booking the Canaima apartments - just make sure they are still for rent.

I was looking at a site today that rents apartments out in the Montemar area of Torremolinos and apart from photos of the inside of the apartment, one of the photos showed the view from the balcony.
In the photo I noticed in the corner that the balcony had a "Se vende" sign (for sale) attached to the outside, so whoever owns the apartment is trying to sell it, as well as rent it....or rent it until they sell it.

A lot of owners in spain do not rent their properties and many live in apartment blocks, the same blocks that have rental properties. In my urbanisation there are two apartments for sale. One is a spaniard moving back to Barcelona and the other is an elderly man who's lived there for many years and is now returning to the UK. Just because there are Se Vende signs on apartment blocks, does not mean that a particular apartment that is rented is going to be sold.

Unless you know the apartment in the photo is rented I think you are just jumping to conclusions that may worry many people.

So, you're saying that I'm jumping to conclusions when this photo that I have in front of me, which has a Se Vende sign and a "For Sale" sign attached to the balcony rails of the actual apartment that is also being rented out, on a rental site, has nothing to do with this particular apartment.?
Do people usually allow others to stick their Se Vende signs on another balcony railings.?

It was just something that I noticed because of this thread and I'll send you the link/photo if you like.

I stand corrected if you are saying that the se vende sign was on the actual apartment that is being advertised for rent. The way it read to me was that a photo was taken of a view from the balcony and as such, was another apartment.

Maybe you should post the apartment in question (or a link) in case anyone has decided to rent it?

I'll stand corrected because I have just noticed that they have put a disclaimer on the page saying the exact apartment for rent shown in the photo's may not be available , but they can offer one with similiar furnishing......that can be very misleading if you chose the apartment because of the photos and don't notice the disclaimer.

Katy, I'm really pleased it has worked out well for you.

Sanji, thanks for the link. This is a large company that have lots of rentals on their books. It looks like they manage or are agents for lots of properties, some being in the same blocks. They state:

Browse through what we have on offer then contact us to make your booking. We will call you right back to discuss your requirements.

The images shown are all examples of what we have on offer and the exact apartment shown may not be available but we will be able to offer you one very similar and as comfortably furnished.

I think it's slightly misleading if it isn't read properly, but it looks to me that they will take your booking then decide where to put you, after phoning around to see who has availability (personally not what I would want)!

Most private rentors just have an advert on a rental site and what you see is what you get.

Hi Wanakalou
Interesting to see this has perhaps made people a bit more cautious about renting. Obviously with the £/euro disaster anyone trying to sell their place are going to grab a good offer with both hands but think they should warn people that the apartment is on the market and be able to offer them a suitable alternative. I think we were quite lucky in the circumstances as we had dealt with the original renter twice before so think he felt a bit guilty but others may not be!!

Yes Katy, I do agree, but most owners who pay to advertise on the big rental sites do tend to be responsible owners. I know we read some horror stories, but they are very few and far between. Since the credit crunch I haven't had one person ask if I am selling :yikes I do occasionally get people phoning me as well as emailing, just to make sure I do exist though

Yes Wanakalou we've been renting apartments all over the place for the last 10 years and never had any problems considering you're taking people on trust, but I suppose these things happen sometimes. Just hope our place is OK when we get there!!
