We walked the gorge a number of years ago but did it on an organised trip. We were picked up by the coach at 5am (nearly overslept!) and got to the top of the gorge for 7am, as the aim is to avoid walking in the heat of the day. We got to the bottom about midday and had a well needed swim in the sea before we got the ferry mid-afternoon to be picked up again by coach at the other end. Though we went on a coach, everyone walked at their own pace and soon spread out, so we didn't feel herded or crowded. It is very impressive and well work the effort - though 5000 feet and 11 miles downhill took it's toll on my legs and I could hardly move the next day.

I've done the Samaria Gorge several times with and without children. The youngest I've taken is 8 years old and in fact I intend to take my 8 year old daughter this year. It's a magnificent day out but it's not as hard as people say. It's just a long walk but make sure you have good trainers. There's no road out at the end so you have to take the boat. Do it on a tour or speak to a taxi firm who will take you to the top and meet you where the boat comes in. There's water to drink en route and even a couple of tavernas but you cannot stop for too long.
I prefer to stay in Western Crete which is already closer to the mountains so you will need an early start from Gouves. When you see the beauty of Western Crete you may be tempted to stay there next time. Enjoy the Gorge....the beer at the end is the best of the holiday!
