Hi there, am visting Gouves next week and want to walk the gorge. Was there two years ago but unable to do it as it was closed due to the heatwave! Can anyone give me any advice on the logistics of getting to the start point from Gouves and returning home from the end of the gorge? Can it be done in one day or do youhave to stay overnight?
Thanks.
We walked the gorge a number of years ago but did it on an organised trip. We were picked up by the coach at 5am (nearly overslept!) and got to the top of the gorge for 7am, as the aim is to avoid walking in the heat of the day. We got to the bottom about midday and had a well needed swim in the sea before we got the ferry mid-afternoon to be picked up again by coach at the other end. Though we went on a coach, everyone walked at their own pace and soon spread out, so we didn't feel herded or crowded. It is very impressive and well work the effort - though 5000 feet and 11 miles downhill took it's toll on my legs and I could hardly move the next day.
I prefer to stay in Western Crete which is already closer to the mountains so you will need an early start from Gouves. When you see the beauty of Western Crete you may be tempted to stay there next time. Enjoy the Gorge....the beer at the end is the best of the holiday!
