We have a house in Turkey and have been hiring a car over there and driving for a couple of years now - well, the other half has, not me. He reckons it ain't too bad as long as you always expect the unexpected. I suppose it depends where you're driving but we drive all over the Bodrum peninsula and even further afield. My son in law also drives over there (we all go away together) and he finds it okay too. Just remember to watch for the potholes, the donkeys on the road, people overtaking and undertaking, people going the wrong way down a one-way street, etc, etc, etc.

Actually I would highly recommend it as it does give you the opportunity to get off the beaten track and see things you'd never see by relying in trips or the dolmus. Just take it easy, keep your wits about you and remember to use your horn!!!

A lovely English lady I know in Marmaris has been driving there for 8 years possibly more. I always ask her does it not bother her to drive in and around Marmaris. She always gives me the same answer that she has never been involved in an accident in Turkey but she has in England ...

Yes like anywhere else expect the unexpected, Note also their is far less traffic on the roads in Turkey which makes driving easier, Even driving on the wrong side of the road is easy enough, Just take your time at the start and build up your confidense, I always go to the wrong side to drive the car :rofl that bit I cant get used to at all, And funny enough when you return home it all feels rather strange for the first minute or ten.

my partner had never driven in turkey but this year we were forced to hire a car because of the location of the flat we booked and to cut a long story short he loved it!!! the freedom it gave us was fantastic and we visited loads more places and saw so much more of the countryside compared to the dolmus - we are off to gumbet again in september and we now hirering a car for the whole 2 weeks - my advice is go for it!!

louietudor, Get an Lpg hire car, But you have to book them in advance, Lpg is less than half the price of petrol in Turkey.
