Mum's First Day.................

As some will know my Dad passed away last year and this year my Mum came with us for her first trip to Goa, here's the story of her first day..............The excitement had been building all day as we sat in Weatherspoons at Gatwick chatting excitedly about all the adventures that might follow, the flight was perfect (well almost more of that in a minute) less than 9 hours and I really couldn't complain about the Thomas Cook plane decent legroom back-seat TV's etc. The wings tipped as we prepared to land and my Mum got her first glimpse of the Arabian Sea down below as blue as ever and the quaint Goan fishing boats bobbing up and down, my Mums face just gleamed as the plane made it's final approach.....all of a sudden the engines began to roar and the plane began to climb "I'm sure there is nothing much to be alarmed about and I am sure the Captain will give us an update as soon as he can" came the announcement. I smiled and tried to look calm as my stomach did somersaults and there were a few gasps of panic from behind us. The Captain came on to say that Control had asked them to abort the landing and we had to circle and attempt to land again. Second time around we landed with no problems much to eveyone's relief. Just after we landed the Captain said that he had just been told the reason for the aborted landing....go on take a guess........give you a clue......we are talking Goa.........have you guessed yet?........could only be one of two things well it wasn't cows on the runway...... but yes a dog was running across the runway....only in Goa lol. We made it through customs fairly quickly and collected our case's. As we made our way outside we could see 100 pairs of eyes staring at us from behind the barrier. Like Hyena's waiting to pounce on the fresh meat the porters gathered expectantly eyeing up their prey. I had warned my Mum so she just stayed closely behind us, then off to the left our friend Jaan with a beaming smile and a wave, he quickly brought his car round to the front and we loaded the car up despite the best attempts of the Hyena's I mean porters;-) to pick up a case every 5 steps. So onto the journey South past the industrial site and the slums, I pointed them out to my Mum and she was just open mouthed staring out of the window. We then took a right and on to the coastal road, driving through the villages with all the colours and sights.........the cows wandering down the road, the ladies carrying loads of wood on their heads, the locals dressed in their Sunday bests driving scooters as they to and from Mass at the churches in Benaulim and Varca, the blue wheels whirring round as the street vendors process and juice the cane. The small fish markets on the corners, the men sitting reading their papers over a cup of tea in the small local corner cafe's and bars. Driving past the rice fields which are so picturesque at this time of year with the lone Heron standing in the corner of the field, the egrets and kites flying across the sky....all the time my Mum just staring open mouthed out of the window. We enter Cavelossim with the gleaming white church at the cross-roads, round the next corner we came to the Palm Grove and our home for the next two weeks. Laurence the owner came out to meet us with a big beaming smile and it was hugs all round like the old friends that we are. I introduced my Mum who was still very subdued, we checked in to our two rooms, showered and then headed off to the beach. We stopped at the first shack we came to and had lunch before relaxing on sunbeds for the rest of the afternoon, well except me who had to go for a long walk along the shore. None of us could believe we were actually there, we just stared up the gorgeous beach, the white sands, the palm tree's and the sparkling blue sea. We then had our first cocktails and watched the sun go down....my Mums first Goan Sunset.......just after the sunset I asked my Mum the question I had been wondering since we arrived...."so Mum are you in shock or in awe".........."just in awe came the reply I can't believe I am actually here and not watching TV and I am just soaking in all the sights, colours, sounds and smell" yes Mum was already starting to fall for Goa. That evening we went to the Riverview and sat on the pontoon, my Mum just looked around her and squealed with delight just like a schoolchild her face so excited. Unbelievably the second song the band played was "Mum and Dad's song" one that my Dad used to sing all the time (my Dad played guitar and had a great voice) "Talk about things like a walk in the park, things like a kiss in the dark, talk about the things we used to do........" they sang, I had tears in my eyes and I looked across at Mum not knowing how she would be and I can honestly say that for the first time since Dad died I could see a real genuine spark in her eyes and a smile that just oozed happiness.........

Sorry Anita I meant to say the food at The Palm Grove is excellant, in fact they do an awful lot of delivery business to the management and staff of a few of the local hotels and when we were there they did the outside catering when the Minister for Goa was in Cavelossim for the day.

I was on the same flight. I'm sure we were only a few feet from the ground. Once the pilot pulled up, it seemed to go eerily silent, and then the engines roared into life. The drunk on the plane who had been a pain since take off, in his half conscious state, thought it was the reverse thrust for braking after landing, and proceeded to get up and get his hand luggage. You've never heard cabin crew shout so loudly!!!!
