Just got back at the w/e. Weather was hottest and driest we have experienced in early September in the last 10 years. Apparently Mallorca has had 2nd best summer weather in last 30 years (best was 2003). Bad news is it's broken and there's rain and thunder this week.
Restaurants in Puerto Pollensa...
A favourite with many people "Tango", on the square, is still out of town waiting the completion of the new building (when will that be judging by the number of uncompleted building sites and the economic conditions). "Tots", another favourite, has not improved any since new management took over in May 2008, pity cos it was one of the best for a good quality, low cost meal.
Last year I recommended "Los Faroles", opposite the marina. Tried it again and this time the food was ordinary and the service poor (including having to ask for my change, which seemed to cause complete chaos and resulted in a till check). Next day I read in the "Mallorca Daily Bulletin" an article complaining about the variability in Mallorca restaurants, coincidence or what.
Tried "Makassar" on the square about 2&1/2 years ago and had a very nice meal. Sorry we went this time. I ordered a pasta dish and my wife a chicken dish, both looked and sounded great on the menu. Both were so overwhelmed by their respective sauces that the only way you could distinguish what you were eating was by texture. Disgusting meal. To my shame we eat what we could, did not complain and left no tip. Won't be going back. Our favourite remains the "Celler La Parra" on the Pollensa road.
In contrast, we were in Palma where we usualy have lunch/drinks in "Cafe Cappuccino" down from Plaza Espania, but it's become over-priced and under-serviced. After a wander around we arrived in the Plaza Major, which I had read bad stories about it being an area greatly overpriced for food and drink. Surprised to see such a good selection of small cafes with varied menus. Had two excellent main courses, a bottle of wine and a small water for 28 Euros. Great value in the "Cafe Paris".
Fish and shellfish in restaurants continues to be much more expensive than the UK and not great quality. Why I wonder.
Supermarkets...
Prices in general more expensive than the UK. Example, 3.50 Euros for 500g of minced beef which you get in M&S for £2.
Exceptions were lovely Langoustines (imported from Scotland) for 9 Euros a Kilo, also "Aurum" beer (recommended by Andrew711) which I found perfectly good at 59 Cents a litre bottle (half the price of San Miguel). Will be drinking that in future.
Of course the Pound Sterling is no big help in this at around 1.10 Euros to the Pound.
The beach was the busiest I've seen it in years (maybe because of the weather) but the town was quiet at night when away from the Pine Walk area. More people eating in rather than out ? Shops/bars/restaurants either closed or closing each day we were there. Permanent I assume judging by the for sale/lease/rent signs. Read that unemployment in Mallorca projected to go to 25% and income per head is 3% lower than Spain average, down from 15% above the average. Bad times.
Already booked for our return next spring, if the weather's as good and the Pound improves then I'll be well pleased.
