To accuse "longtermers" as racist is laughable and doesn't even deserve a response.

I think you'll find I said SOME longtermers, and believe me they were as racist as they come and very open with it.

Martin_d....
if you find its necessary to try and upset someone with such a pathetic personal assumption...why dont you for everyones sake on this site....please stop posting, and go find another site where you can spout your views... :cheers

I'm not trying to upset anyone, but i found the comment racist and whats even worse I cant believe there are so many on here who didn't. How would the following sentence be taken: "Caught someone last night trying to take my washing off my washing line ! and they were black couple ! "

And noggin, as for going elsewhere, I will decide where and what I post unless the admin want to delete what I post. I haven't posted anything offensive, quite the opposite.

This is political correctness in Capital Letters. If you accept that a small minority of the local populace are light fingered, then its equally right that a small minority of the white population can be light fingered too. I think were the sentence went wrong is "and they white ." He should have said they were European. I think its just a slip of the querty, not intentional.

If I can speak in defence of the "long-termers" - which at present I do not consider myself to be, incidentally............

When you stay in Goa long term, you are subjected to blatant rascism on a daily basis, and it is entirely based on the colour of your skin.
We are all aware of the higher prices charged by shops, taxis and restaurants in semi-discreet manner, but especially during the monsoon when white faces are a lot rarer, you will be openly told that you can and should pay more, because you can!
Occasionally, you will hear highly offensive racist remarks made in English, but if you take the trouble to learn Konkani you will be amazed at the things you are called behind your back. Bearing in mind that we lived in the community, out of tourism, and did our best to fit in, I found it very offensive and unfair.
When I see a short-term holiday maker judging people who have expended considerable effort to live in the place of their dreams on the basis of what he, in an excessively Politically Correct manner judges to be a racist remark it makes me a little angry.
Its clear that a lot of other posters feel that the reaction was excessive, a fact that should give us all some hope.............and maybe some relief from the constant nit-picking that is plaguing this forum at present.

A very interesting post Johnny Five! I didn't realise there was so much antagonism towards the long termers from the locals. I know this is a bit :offtop but why do the locals not like them, if they are spending money at local shops and restaurants all year round?

Johnny, two wrongs dont make a right though. I know there is racism on both sides, I saw a few places with signs saying Rent to foreigners only, and my feelings were the same. I know all the crap etc that goes on, but I'm bemused why skin colour is an issue. scum is scum regardless of skin colour

What you also didnt realise, Squigs, as you presumably do not speak Konkani, is the vile and disgusting things that shopkeepers/taxi drivers et al say about holiday makers, sometimes to their faces as they know they will not understand.
Next time a Goan says something in Konkani in front of you and all the othrers laugh, be very suspicious. I have had to pull them up about this in the strongest terms on many occasions.
Long-termers are despised by local businesses because they do not spend money like water........they cant afford to spend at the same rate for 4 months as a holiday maker can for 2 weeks. The locals get the idea that all foreigners will spend at a two week rate and expect it. They have had a hell of a shock with the Russians as they can be very mean.

Martin, you are clearly determined to grind on with this "racist" theory of yours, so carry on and enjoy yourself................

Spot on Johnny Five. Every thread seems to descend into some "issue" unrelated to the original topic. It's a nonsense!

We started this talking about petrol thefts and now we're into racism!

Ok I think we have taken this far enough now!

Please lets all try and stay as friendly as possible.......lets not start having to lock topics.

As someone who may have (privately and not on forum) have thought that Moderation on Holiday Truths may have leaned towards the heavy handed in the past, can I compliment all of you unpaid volunteers for the way you have dealt with the past few days.
In my opinion, excessively (and unrealistically) positive posts are as damaging to the forum as negative ones, and the recent attitude of the moderators deserves the respect of all!
The forum, as I see it, is both a resource of useful information, and a venue for banter. Goa is entering a difficult time with regards to tourism and an absence of input on the inevitable downsides would destroy the credibility of the entire forum.
Yes HT is essentially a "tweekers" forum, but I think all serious members are aware that the long-term members are privy to far more relevant information.
Spaldy opened the proverbial " can of worms" with his thread, and personally I think the results have been very positive. Yes, what some people would call the "perennial moaners" have come to the fore, but equally the un-realistic Goa fans who are pitifully unfit to advise anyone have also shown their true colours. Lets note this and move on.............maybe HT is a better place for this clearing of the air?

Oh and just to keep things on thread, I have had my petrol stolen several times, by different means. Could I enjoy my stay by pouring a little bit in each day? Could I hell! Big chain round the seat is the best solution..................
Reply
J5 and the other poster is the way to go with the chain across the seat ,as i cant keep filling up from a 5 litre bottle every day . Some days i think i am only ging a few miles and then end up on Reddi beach and i dont trust any petrol stations on the way .
Reply
The chain is definitely the way to go. If you dont want to scratch the paintwork on the scooter, get some thin plastic pipe from a big hardware shop and feed the chain through it first. You dont need mega-thick chain, these thieving scum will just move on to the next victim when they see any attempt to stop them!

johnny five
I've not read any posts from people who are 'pitifully unfit' to advise anyone.

I HAVE read posts from people who dislike Goa and bang on about how much they dislike it.
I HAVE read posts from people who may have rose-tinted spectacles on when talking about the place they love to visit.

'Pitifully unfit' to give their own view of Goa?
I don't think it fair to say that of anyone who posts on a forum such as HT.

imho
good luck with thwarting the petrol thief. :gluck

Thanks J5 i was wondering how to stop the paint work being scratched. Now the Charters are in we now have a day time security guard here plus i have at last seen the sleeping night time guard. I am off traveling on monday and am parking my scooter at a friends villa. Will be looking for a scooter petrol locking cap while i am away .
Reply
If you can't find any of the plastic tube just put an old towel over the scooter before you put the chain round it. Put the towel under the seat to trap it then let it hang over the side of the scooter so that the chain rests on it.
Reply
might be a good idea to buy an inner tube and use that .
for covering the chain
