Yes, a copy kept in any safe way is good advice and essential, and has been advised before on here.

However.............

The point being made here is that documents to allow you to travel home at the end of your holiday can no longer be issued in Goa.
This means that if your passport is lost, or more likely these days, stolen, especially near the end of your holiday, you face up to three weeks wait for replacement documents.
A copy of your passport will help this process, but you cant travel on it.

Can you imagine the costs and inconvenience of having to wait around in Goa for up to three weeks waiting for a permit to travel?
Yet another non-tourist friendly move by the authorities it would seem?

:yikes

;) Yep - have had our passport details etc scanned in and sent to my Hotmail account for some years now..I THINK I saw it on a thread on HT! Not all email accounts are easily accessible from abroad thats why I sent it to my Hotmail because I KNOW I can access it from wherever! I do the same with our insurance details too. Just keep them in a 'folder' within the account.

was just wondering if anyone knew weather or not your insurance would cover you for expenses if your passport was stolen and i had to be stuck in goa for upto 3 more weeks ;)

And you and your other half can stay in Goa for three weeks wating for permission to leave for £250 a head? At tourist rates that would be difficult, but factor in "at home" costs as well, just tjhink about it. Where does this complacent "I've emailed myself a copy of all my documents come from?

Has anyone actually read this thread?

The whole point of it was to notify that if your passport is lost or STOLEN, it is now a major and time consuming issue.

Where you have stashed/e-mailed copies is totally irrelevant, but........
So pleased to see so many members are taking this precaution, but in terms of this scenario, useless!

I state again.................e-mailed, photocopied, tatooed on your bum, copies are irrelevant.......completely, you cannot travel on them, all they can do is help with a replacement passport. And this change in the rules is, in tourist travel terms, EXCEPTIONAL, so please be aware.
The whole process starts AFTER the crime.............and the message here...........if anyone bothered to read it, is...........as of now it will take a lot longer!

Do not dismiss this please. Read and try to understand the implications (and check if your insurance would cover this all too common scenario please)

That is "all too common to most destinations", where it would take a few days to solve the problem!

I started this thread in an attempt to help people avoid a major problem, and have watched all the completely useless responses flood in.

I've tried and from now on will give up, so please dont waste your time slagging me off. If you think its not important, fine.................I really do not mind.

I'm 99.9% certain our members will have fully read your link johnny five. They've offered solutions to make the process easier/simpler and in the case of the insurance, it was only mentioned out in a lighthearted way by Ryan :duh

Do you, yourself have any helpful suggestions? (Apart from, of course, don't bother holidaying in Goa?) Or, because of this rule is Goa no longer on your list of holiday destinations?

I'll take that as a no.

Can't really see what else people can do other than keep your documents as safe as you can OR not go to Goa. As most here are now booked its unlikely they will change their plans.

At least being able to access and print off copies of documents that contain the relevant information required to obtain replacements will provide some peace of mind. If any one of us gets stuck in Goa for 3 weeks whilst waiting for replacement passports/travel permits or whatever then so be it, that's what we will have to do. :que I do agree that this is yet another retrograde step by the powers that be but my holiday is booked and I am committed to go so I shall just do what others have suggested (copy to hotmail) and try to keep my documents as safe as is possible whilst there (and en route).

Lets just hope it won't happen to us and that we are not put in this traumatic, inconvenient and expensive position.

I am pretty sure that I have got the message J5 and thank you for bringing this important issue to my attention, it always helps to be reminded about security and of changes that we may not have otherwise heard about.

as you say if your passport is stolen or lost then your in for upto a 3 week wait, which after a bit of research i have been told will take no more than a week... how long is a piece of string comes to mind... anyway, hope it doesn't happen to me but if it does I will just have to deal with it an have a few more weeks in the sun waiting for my new one with a beer!

I would like to know where the info came from as I have spent a while looking through official sources and can't find any change at all. That is not to say, there isn't one- I just can't find any.
Info for what to do if you lose or have your passport stolen here.
