I personally think this will have a damaging effect on Marmaris and will drive the younger generation away. Bar Street is a total rip-off and you could not afford to drink down there every night. I booked before the bars were demolished and I think this will be my last time there.
i have never drank in any of the bar street pubs/clubs/bars... and do not intend to (not with their prices)... im sure i will have a fab time in may, it just wont feel the same if theres a huge gaping gap along the beach front... theres nothing more mesmerising or relaxing as sitting on the beach front enjoying a meal or a drink... i do hope its not too damaging for marmaris!
I just dont want to see it left as waste ground!!I also loved that area to have a meal looking over the sea,but it wont stop me going back to Marmaris,we stay in Armutalan and have found some nice restaurants there and have made some good friends here over the years, looking forward to June when we go back.

At least the bars on the kumkoy/side road are mostly still there - its been confirmed our favourite still is!
i have just watched that video with my mouth wide open!!! what have they done to the beautiful beach front! It looks like a huge terroist attack not something that has been planned by the mayor! what has he done!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!
gutted isn't the word! The garden was my fave place to eat it will be very strange in may this year...... utterly devastated

Has anyone got any more information on Side - further up heading to KUmkoy/Colakli
There is a street leading down to the beach that has been completly demolished, I'm trying to think of the name of the big hotel near it but can't. I think that it was mainly german hotels, as there were very little english people in this area when we walked through it.
Apparently the walkway is being built in sections. From what I understand the section from Side to around the Jandarma (but possibly a bit further as I'm unsure about the order of hotels - clearly not been enough!!). The next section, up to about the Hemera (or so I've been told) will be done at the end of this coming season (I think work is starting earlier though, around the end of September rather than waiting until the offical end of season November - again I'm just going on what I've been told).
Hope I've helped.
EDIT - have just sat on Google Maps and worked out that the building work is PAST the Jandarma, as I know it reaches the Cennet/Acanthus from the photos (and I can now remember where they are, and it is definitely further away from Side than the Jandarma).
All the bars and some restaurants were knocked down due to poor planning permission.
This is what's going to happen this year. Some restaurants like o Yes, and Aysa restaurant will still be operational.
All the debree and rubble have been cleaned. There will be new bars built by the same owners.
I usually walk down there every week. they have began work on extending the beach and promonade bringing in new tiles. I hope the bars will commence building soon as well.
so should all be ok by the sounds of things, not exactly the same but better than it looks now!!!!!!
Whilst I suspect there may be a bar or two that we drank in that will not be there any more, what impressed me most about Turkey was the people. The idea of openfronted restaurants is not unique to Turkey but the attitude of the people working there most certainly is.
We have never, on any holiday, been made to feel more welcome than by the staff of Ozzys in Icmeler (and that includes both Ozzy, Mahmet and their families.
Yes I've enjoyed holidays in other parts of the med - but nothing like the welcome in Turkey. I think the Turkish government and councils would be aware of this and also how important tourism is to the national economy. I find it hard to believe that they would do anything that would be catastrophically detrimental to the tourist trade so as I said in the beginning - see you in Turkey in september (probably Bodrum Penninsula this time)

Never been to Marmaris before, booked our first trip but now I'm read about bulldozers building sites and changes to the sea front all possibly waiting for this years tourists . It's all rather worrying, can anyone put our minds at ease regarding what is actually going on, and when will all the changes be finished ?
Don't worry, they know what they are doing and Turkish builders can work extremely fast. All the work will be completed at all the resorts by the beginning of the season at the end of April.
this is what it looked like in december, how can all this be rebuilt by the beginning of the season ?.

Thnaks for the update cloclo.
I am due to visit Side Star hotel, Side in June 2010, can anyone tell me what I will be met with regarding the demolision of the beach front bars. according to brochure (Thomson Turkey) there are beach front bars and restaurants just outside of the hotel are these likely to still be there come June. Also can anyone give me any information on the hotel, rooms, bars, food, etc.
they have been told there is no pool there any more. They are angry that they have never been told of this they found out
from someone who has just been over there. The pool is not getting replaced .
Apologies if there is already a topic about this. I'm starting to get a little worried. I booked my holiday to Marmaris back in Sept last year. We usually go three times a year and have made lots of friends there over the years. This year we decided to book the Nergis Beach Hotel - a real lazy holiday of falling out of bed and onto the beach. Bliss! Our friends over there have kept us well informed about all the demolition work and have sent pics to show us the devastation. We just kept thinking.....they'll rebuild, it'll all be ok, but we've found out that they aren't rebuilding - certainly not this year, as legally all building work has to be completed by 1st April anyway and if they were going to start anything, Im sure it would be well underway now. We travel on 28th May. So as it stands.... our hotel is sat in the middle of.... nothing!!! Talked to our travel agent today, who said they didn't know anything about it. We've got to go back on Monday. Anyone got any advice??
OK, so Bar St is still in the old town BUT that's completely different to what the long beach front was like. Bar St is so expensive and really only for the hardened 'clubbers', the beach front was ok for all types, couples, families etc, bars like Turtle, Bar-X, Salt'n'Pepa, beach club and loads of sea front restaurants have all gone under the bulldozers!!! What are the planns for the front now?
Hope this gets sorted, but I really feel that the front will never be the same, may be better, who knows, I know they work/build quickly over there, BUT surely no way can it be all done for start of the hol season this year? So think we'll give Marm a miss for this year until we see how it turns out. We were thinking off going to the Nergis hotel but it now looks like it's right next to a bomb site! Are Travel Operators aware of this AND are they alerting people who have booked and are expecting the "old Marmaris beach front",
Hope people going this spring can let us all know what it's like?
Still love Turkey, Marm will always have a place in my heart - was our first Turkish holiday way back in 1998!
Good luck Marm
