I love my maxi dresses they are great fot the evenings on holiday. I have five in various colours, I am 5 foot 8 so I can get away with nice flip flops with mine which is another bonus for me, no uncomfy heels. I was in New Look yesterday and they had absolutely loads but I managed to resist, I decided a couple of weeks ago I have plenty for my hols and so far I have managed to resist buying anything else. Four weeks till we go and I just have toiletries to get.
Im in love with them, i was concerned at first as i saw people looking great and some looking horrific in maxi dress. But tryed a few on yesterday and i have been converted. Ive just ordered three from newlook as they have nice 20% discount on at the mo, and pair of gladiators. i got a animal print strapless, yellow with print and black with print with straps, so fingers crossed.
I bought one today in Evans....I'll probably be one of those that looks horrific in one but hey, I'll be on holiday and I don't care
Helen, I'd like to say that the dress looks a lot nicer on you than it does in the picture. You looked lovely in it- I really fancy getting one but think I'll be too warm in one in Turkey in August. What does everyone think? I don't really go anywhere in this country to get the use out of one either
When I went to town the other day I could'nt resist the one I saw in River Island its the one in the link below but its without the belt like on the model then I went into New Look and found one in there in turquoise, peach, black and white with gold thread running through the material. They will be in my suitcase on the next holiday
That's lovely Angie.
Shirley H - i don't think you'd be too hot in a maxi for Turkey summer evenings. If anything, you'd feel comfortably cooler than you would in jeans or trousers and I find that the movement of a maxi seems to create a breezy effect underneath which has a calming effect on sunburnt legs (and you can go commando - yay!). When you think about it, people in hot countries - the middle east for example - have always worn long gowns. The only caution I would advise is think about the material. Long jersey dresses can be quite heavy - a pain when packing - but the hanging weight can also irritate sunburned shoulders.
Thank You Helen I just could'nt resist that one, now could I, I would never have forgiven myself if I had passed on that
Shirley you would be surprised how much you would wear it in this country. I had one on today and one on yesterday during the daytime. They are just so cool to wear and dont stick to your body. I wore all mine whilst in Benidorm just and it was in the 90's there
go on buy one and give them a try, you will be pleasently surprised
I have been to a christening today and almost all the women there were in maxi-dresses - they all looked lovely!
Love maxi dresses, but i am 5.1 and thought i would be too short to carry one off, but took the plunge and tried it on and wow it felt and looked great, also bought the little shrug as i am a woman over a certain age to cover the top of my arms only probelm i have now is do i wear flats or heels
Llindy I wear toe post sandles with kitten heels as I am only 5'1" too...........I find I look and feel better with just that little height instead of been flat.
I got a gorgeous colourful one from New Look a few months ago. I'll be buying more as I've pretty much lived in it in the spontaneous warm weather we've seen recently!
Being only 5foot I've always avoided them, don't think we'll be getting away this year but I have a chirstening soon and if the weather is nice a maxi dress would be great. I feel a weekend shopping trip coming on.
Helen
If you like them and think they suit you, then go for it - as you say, you're on holiday, so who cares!
I'm 5'2" and there's no way I'd wear one, as being short and dumpy, I'd look like someone had just chopped my legs off!
I'm only 5ft 2ins and on the dumpy side too and I wouldn't be without my maxis in the summer! I think that it depends a lot on the particular style. A highwaisted empire line (like most of those in the shops at the moment can actually be quite 'lengthening' - especially if worn with heels or wedge sandals. And one without too much width in the skirt and/or made in a really soft material that drapes well and doesn't stick out, can also do wonders for the proportions.
My bugbear with most of those in the shops at the moment is the very narrow straps on most of them - as a woman of a certain age (I remember the current styles first time around!) I cannot get used to the 'bra on show' look and prefer a strap wide enough to cover the bra straps. It's not a proplbem in the typical Scottish summer because I wear a little shrug on top but it's going to be far too hot in Cuba next month to want to do that!
SM
Maybe that's where I've been going wrong then, SMa - just trying the wrong styles. Might consider having a look at some of them and following your suggestions.
I bought another one from the catologue im 5ft 2 size 6 and normally they drown me so opted for petite ranges, im after a black plain one from miss selfridge which Il purchase before my jollies in aug, they look lovely all the girls had them on in manchester last saturday..i wear mine with my gladiators or flat sandals..
I would love some of these however, I'm a size 14 ( but try telling my size 16 boobs that) so when I have tried them on they are too tight across the bust so I try on a 16 and I look pregnant because from the bust down it's too big. Even the ones with elastic in the back make my bum look huge. I'll just have to adore them from afar
