I'm with you there Sanji. We rarely do anything but self catering, and I love having a mosey round the foreign
supermarkets to see what's what.
However, I do think it depends where you take your holiday in the world. We tend to stick to Portugal
and Spain, and they tend to have Aldi, or Lidl supermarkets where brands are similar to here.
However, we went to Kefalonia a few years back, and spent half a day searching for the local
Lidl supermarket to buy supplies. There wasn't one. There wasn't even a decent sized supermarket,
just a tiny shop absolutely crammed full of goods.
All the labels were in Greek, and I don't know if you've ever tried reading Greek labels?
Buying bacon, cheese, (apart from feta) and stuff we like here was impossible, and we ended up eating out most
days anyway.
We're off to Turkey this year, and although we have been once before, we had to eat out every day
as we went B&B, and there wasn't as much as a kettle in our tiny hotel room.
Are there any avid Turkey fans that can tell us if we can buy basic foodstuffs anywhere?
I know it's a Muslim Country, but we do like our bacon and eggs sometimes. (A treat we keep for Christmas and holidays).
Bread and cream cheese, and yogurt and honey just don't hit the spot for hubby.
Bacon, eggs, and tomatoes, and a cup of tea or nothing for him I'm afraid. (He's getting to be a fussy old bu**er like his Father!!!!!
Whereabouts in Turkey are you thinking of? The major resorts almost always have at least one large supermarket in or near them. We live for half of the year in Konacik in Turkey and have the choice of several supermarkets (one of them being Kipa which is owned by Tesco). You get all the basic foodstuffs you require - and in Migros you can actually get bacon (although I can't say what it tastes like as I've never tried it). Eggs (yumurta), tomatoes (domates) and bread (ekmek) are readily available.
The only things I take with me are a few tea bags, a little sugar and a little dried milk so that we can have a cup of tea before going shopping. Very often though in private apartments this sort of thing is often in the cupboard. If we are arriving late then I pack some pasta and a sauce in case the shops are shut.
In Cala Bona 3 years ago the apartment had a very small kitchen with only a hob and microwave but we did not eat out once. This apartment was made for outdoor living with 3 terraces overlooking the sea and a most stunning view - it was a pleasure to be able to eat all our meals admiring this view. It is amazing what you can do with just a hob and microwave!
Unless you are on a special diet I see no point in taking loads of food - go for the local stuff and not the imported British goods.
One other thing to consider is that luggage does sometimes go astray - imagine packing perishables in your case only for it to go missing for a few days - not pleasant!
Pippa
