Hi 1sttimer :welcome to the forum.

I tend to go north, rather than south, but from what I have read I don't think there is very much difference in price between the two.

I do think you need to revise your expectations regarding accommodation costs as 2-3 pounds a night is very, very cheap. But someone may come along and correct me.

For an idea of prices check out this thread by someone who spent 3 months in Goa on a tight budget http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=151229

There is a separate thread on visas at the top of the forum page as a sticky.

I would also recommend borrowing a guide book or two from your local library for a bit more information and to get an idea of what you want to see and do.

PS - Kiltman beat me to the first reply.

Think you needed to be here five to ten year ago to find accommodation near the coast for £3, you can still find family's that let out a room cheap but not that cheap and even the basic huts on the beach start from £10 out of season, not saying it can't be done but you will have to work very hard to find anything

If you want the beach and to be able to enjoy the buzz of Anjuna and the Saturday night markets you need to go north, if all you want is a laid back time on the beach go south.

Eating in a local places is very cheap north or south but think there are more road side carts up north, the beach shacks and some restaurants are a bit more expensive in the north but it really depends on what you want to dine on and how basic you will tolerate

hi north is cheaper than south because it has more places to eat and stay, if you go out of town the food is cheaper still, as for somewhere to stay you wont get anything for what you want, 14 pounds a night is more the norm with breakfast,

I assume your "0" key on your keyboard got stuck when quoting your price per night!! :rofl
