Lets assume it all goes t*ts up and Greece decide or are forced to leave the EC, they will need time to print up sufficient drachmae - in the meantime there would be a massive run on the Greek banks, most ordinary Greek citizens will hoard euros, and will continue to welcome euros with open arms - there would be a black market rate for the drachma way below the "official" rate when it WAS issued which would lead to a vicious inflationary spiral, social unrest on a massive scale, mass uncontrolled emigration...................... the knock on the rest of Europe is incalculable -which is why Angela Merkel et al CANNOT afford to boot Greece out - and the Greek government (whoever ends up running the country) CANNOT afford to leave.
At some stage this Summer there will be yet another enormous fudge to allow all the politicians to save face (or at least reduce the amount of egg on face!!)
I know there's no point on worrying too much yet, but we'll certainly be keeping a close eye on how things go.
Shirley i am not thinking about whats going to or could happen at the moment , as i dont think it will affect us at the moment , maybe for those going later in the year then maybe, from what i have been reading on other forums prices are the same as last year for where we are going . The only thing that might make me nervous would be the threat of strikes and losing days . As the holiday is all fully paid i dont know where we would stand in changing destinations at such short notice and or how we would go about it other than forfeiting a lot of money . So at the moment i am still really looking forward to my holiday
I've booked and paid for (Thomas Cook!!) flights and a villa in Rhodes for mid-June - got my euros - just looking on the positive side I'm thinking that the local hoteliers/restauranteurs/bar owners will be welcoming us (and our euros) with open arms - I'm glad I'm not booked to go anywhere near Athens however!!The main risk that I can see in the short term is a disruption to flights - air traffic controllers, baggage handlers, customs officials etc.
everyone seems to be missing the bigger picture, Germany and France cannot afford to let Greece default to the drachma as this would undoubtedly bring the into a downwards spiral and cause further downgrading of eurozone countries international credit worthiness [it would be great for us going on holiday] thus increasing the price of everything [70%] of what we import
Would what we import from Europe get cheaper, but what we export dearer for the Euro countries if the Euro loses value against Sterling Better for our imports but not good for our exports.

Correct Mark.
The millionaire boy George knows this and will not want the euro to lose value against sterling and if our exports get dearer, something will have to 'give' and inflation will rise.
Boy George keeps rabbitting on about growth, but you cannot have the words growth and austerity in the same sentence, because where exactly is the growth going to come from? and this applies to places like Greece and Spain.
There was a guy on the TV last week, some 'money expert' and he was saying that should Greece go back to the drachma, all they will do is stamp over the euro notes with some offical stamp,(at least for the time being) and anybody who has any euros, they will be worth their weight in gold because none of the other european countries dealing in euros, will trade with or want a 'worthless' drachma currency.

over here at the moment they are still waiting to see if they have to vote again next month
Thomascook all up in the air....and Greece messing about to
So I may or may not have a holiday...and if I do it will be right when all the changes in the currency will start...if it does
How quick things can go wrong...I was settled thinking thomascook had done a deal and all was OK...then find it hasnt even gone to the vote...and if vote says no to proposals...risk of them going into administration
I was happy bunny seeing euro rates getting better and better...meaning better spending power this year than last....now could loose that bonus....and find I need the drachema....which could buy me less if comodities food ect prices go high because of lack of credit to the greeks for imports ect...lack of imports would also put demand up local products....which will rise in price
Wish I could have booked for this month instead....tweetie

In the news papers, Thomas cook shares down 11% to 16p, shareholders have not yet agreed to bailout, dosnt look good for thomas cook
Lots of shares have taken a tumble though because of the crisis in Greece.

Current rate of the Euro on the stock market exchange tonight is €1.2585, with bids asking for €1.2615, so Im guessing we could see €1.2610 on stockmarket, Wed morning/afternoon, no doubt in the morning the rate will drop, but climb up stedily
With travel shops giving us €1.22- €1.23
Thomas Cook: Cash Passport Card offering a rate of €1.23
Great if you're going somewhere other than Greece. I'm going ot hold out for a while to see what happens.
