In January 2011, I booked two weeks for myself and daughter with Jewel Holidays, b&b in Benualim, over Xmas, for £560 (each). Looked at the website again in February (to see if we could change the departure date) and the price had doubled!!! It fluctuated slightly through the year but never went down to anything like what we'd paid.
Out of curiosity I looked up the other places I'd stayed at since 2005 and, in general, the prices were up around 35-40%.
However, it's still possible to have a couple of weeks over Xmas reasonably cheaply....
This year, I booked a Monarch flight (yes, dreaded by some but not me), for £712, staying 15/12 to 30/12. Accommodation also booked online in two guesthouses (with excellent visitor reviews). Bearing in mind this is over the Xmas period, the Benaulim guesthouse is charging Rs500/night and the other, in Gokarna, Rs600/night. Total accommodation cost less than £90.
So, total holiday cost £800.... cheaper than a tour operator package.
Used to stay in the north, but find it too touristy now, so prefer the south. Last year and again this December, spending a week in Gokarna, Karnataka. Now that's a real change from Goa, and well worth the two-hour train journey from Margao.... at a cost of Rs23
Having said all this, I think I'll be another who will be taking a break from Goa next year, and going to Vietnam and Cambodia instead. What's interesting is that flights cost around the same and sometimes less than those to Goa. Considering Vietnam is much further east than Goa (about 4 hours' flight) and the extra fuel cost, it make one wonder what we're paying for to get to Goa?
So if flying to Vietnam for the same period this year, I'be be paying about the same for a scheduled flight with Emirates!
We are hoping to go for three weeks in Feb/March time, but will be looking for flights and then staying both north and south. (Thats if we get 6 month visa's ok).
I know the exchange rate is good now, but I expect that as usual it will go down by December. I bought some in London recently @ 80 to the £.
Wondering if any others noticed a massive increase in prices such as I saw early last year?
Any ideas why this might have happened?
(Okay, oil prices increased, but not that much so as to double the price of a package deal.)
It's all about taxes now with long-haul flights and VAT affects everything. Thanks Mr Osbourne, unlike MP's, we can't claim travel as expenses.
We always went in early December (returned before Xmas) except one year when we were there in April as well but the last time we were there was over Christmas 2007 and were put off by the number of drunk Indian tourists who flock there at this time and their attitude towards women, staring at them on the beach and gathering round sunbeds when they were sunbathing etc
I suppose what attracted us to Goa in the first place was that it was somewhere very different to Europe and was pretty cheap as well and because of this you could put up with the obvious flaws such as poor accomodation, poor hygiene, litter etc but after the last visit these things seemed harder to put up with and reading some of the comments on this thread does not fill me with any thoughts in returning.
Since then we have visited Thailand twice in December and loved it, great accomodation and food and also went to Lanzarote over Xmas, it sounds to me like Goa has had it's day and the travel companies & the Goan authorities are doing nothing at all to encourage UK visitors, great shame really as it was always a very special place for me.
Strange how things change!

Yes and you will get a better quality hotel for a lot less money than Goa. We payed about £15 a night for a brilliant hotel in Nha Trang - in Saigon a little more. Pavements and dual carriageways everywhere
Having moved on from Goa and 'done' Cambodia and islands Cambodia side of Thailand - thinking of Vietnam for next year. Will stay in the South. What were the beaches like Waterproof?? I believe they're government owned and not looked after particularly well. Were there sunbeds etc? When in Cambodia we coached to Sihanoukville which was lovely.
Nha Trang beach is in the Top 10 of the most beautiful bays in the world.
