Well I am happy with our Thompson package this season. We are staying at the Ronil in baga, which is not a bad hotel, and have paid just over £700 each for two weeks in December. That is B&B but with some meal vouchers thrown in too, and the food there is excellent.
We are hoping to go for three weeks in Feb/March time, but will be looking for flights and then staying both north and south. (Thats if we get 6 month visa's ok).
I know the exchange rate is good now, but I expect that as usual it will go down by December. I bought some in London recently @ 80 to the £.

Seems a great deal moles, kent. Is that for the Xmas period?

Wondering if any others noticed a massive increase in prices such as I saw early last year?

Any ideas why this might have happened?
(Okay, oil prices increased, but not that much so as to double the price of a package deal.)

No, it is for 8th Dec to 23rd. I know Xmas would be much more expensive, but I still think it's a good deal. The Ronil is a 3* hotel, with air-con, in good central location. On-line with Thompson, but in their brochure it's much more expensive.
It's all about taxes now with long-haul flights and VAT affects everything. Thanks Mr Osbourne, unlike MP's, we can't claim travel as expenses.

The first time my wife and I went to Goa was in December 1999, it was so different from anywhere else we had been before and took a few days to get used to but after that we loved it and went back another 6 times and also went to Kerala one year.

We always went in early December (returned before Xmas) except one year when we were there in April as well but the last time we were there was over Christmas 2007 and were put off by the number of drunk Indian tourists who flock there at this time and their attitude towards women, staring at them on the beach and gathering round sunbeds when they were sunbathing etc

I suppose what attracted us to Goa in the first place was that it was somewhere very different to Europe and was pretty cheap as well and because of this you could put up with the obvious flaws such as poor accomodation, poor hygiene, litter etc but after the last visit these things seemed harder to put up with and reading some of the comments on this thread does not fill me with any thoughts in returning.

Since then we have visited Thailand twice in December and loved it, great accomodation and food and also went to Lanzarote over Xmas, it sounds to me like Goa has had it's day and the travel companies & the Goan authorities are doing nothing at all to encourage UK visitors, great shame really as it was always a very special place for me.

I first went to Goa in 1977 and felt the same as you in 1999! But that was because of too many foreign tourists etc.
Strange how things change!

Having said all this, I think I'll be another who will be taking a break from Goa next year, and going to Vietnam and Cambodia instead. What's interesting is that flights cost around the same and sometimes less than those to Goa. Considering Vietnam is much further east than Goa (about 4 hours' flight) and the extra fuel cost, it make one wonder what we're paying for to get to Goa?
So if flying to Vietnam for the same period this year, I'be be paying about the same for a scheduled flight with Emirates! "

Yes and you will get a better quality hotel for a lot less money than Goa. We payed about £15 a night for a brilliant hotel in Nha Trang - in Saigon a little more. Pavements and dual carriageways everywhere :)

Having moved on from Goa and 'done' Cambodia and islands Cambodia side of Thailand - thinking of Vietnam for next year. Will stay in the South. What were the beaches like Waterproof?? I believe they're government owned and not looked after particularly well. Were there sunbeds etc? When in Cambodia we coached to Sihanoukville which was lovely.

Nha Trang beach is in the Top 10 of the most beautiful bays in the world. :sun2

Nice clean beach beds and no dogs underneath them :-)
