hey there hope you have a good time in this great city! The weather at this time of year is a bit like it is here in early spring so you can have quite mild days (14-17c) but also you get days which are not so good (7-8c) Night life from my experience is definatly based more around eating and less around bars/pubs like the uk out although there are loads of bars for going out drinking e.t.c. I would recomend Campo de fiori as a good area to start out as there are loads of good bars around this famous square.

Hi anywaym me and my husband are going to Rome from end of April for nine days and need a clean, comfortable but cheap room. We don't mind if its out of the centre so we have to get the metro in. Anyone any suggestions PLEASE.

Went to Rome last July for 4 nights..it was sooooo hot but such a great city to visit! Stayed in the Laterano district in a small but great hotel called the Emona Aquaductus, opposite the remains of Nero's Aquaduct.It's off the beaten track, but about 20 mins walk to the Colisseum and 5 minutes walk to the Manzoni metro station.Booked it through Expedia website, as it was the cheapest on there.Look at the following websites for hotels, http://www.romeby.com and INVALID URL they are both very good.The hotel is decorated in an Art Nouveau style and most of the bathrooms have a jacuzzi bath!!!! Breakfast is simple but adequate and the staff are friendly and helpful.Good reviews on http://www.tripadvisor.com.

Teene I was in Rome in January. We stayed in the Waldorf Hotel. It is outside Rome, but lovely Hotel, clean. staff are very helpful. Just 5 mins from the metro. Do not take a cab from termini as you can get the Metro for 1 euro each. we paid 45 euro for a cab. Look at the web site for the Waldorf hotel. Also eating around that area is much cheaper than in and around the tourist areas.

i usualy stay in a bed and breakfast when i go to rome as generaly they are very good and very cheap. Im going back in may and my friend who lives over there booked 2 twin rooms for me and theprice is 55euro per room per night which works out at about 17-18 pounds per person per night which isnt bad! if you are interested illtry andget the phone number of the place weare staying in

We are about to book a holiday in August at Camping I Pini which is 35 KM outside Rome (anyone been there - any reports ?)

We shall fly into Rome , stay one night at the Dei Consli (airport hotel) and we need to travel from the hotel to I Pini on the 3rd August.

Please could you give us an estimation of the taxi price from the hotel to I Pini or, otherwise, any suggestions on how to get there ?

Services to: To reach the residence take the metro line A (direction Battistini) and after 8 stops get off at Valle Aurelia/MA. Take the bus number 31 (toward Aeronautica/Do.) and after 3 stops get off at Leone XIII /Pio XI stop. The Residence is just 400 meters from the bus stop.

I imagine these directions are from Termini - centre of Rome.

From experience, public transport in Italy is good. Cheap and reliable. Train tickets must be validated in the yellow machines before you board the trains and bus tickets purchased in advance from newsagents etc. It's always daunting to travel using public transport abroad, but once you get used to it, it's quite fun!

Added on return from Rome 1.3.05 If you're using public transport, ensure your personal items/money are well hidden - I had my purse stolen either at Termini or on the metro. Seems to be particularly bad at the moment, another person at the rural police station we went to had expactly the same thing happen to her - and another person has posted how she was mugged at Termini

Hi, I would just like to warn everyone to be very careful with your bags around the termini station as one of my friends was mugged there yesterday.

It was 10am in the morning, there were lots of people around, she had a secure across the body bag and she was with a group of friends when 2 young girls (around 12 years old! ) went up to her and started tugging at her clothes. They were babbling in Italian and trying to make the mark of the cross on her forehead! And one of them had a piece of cardboard and kept pushing it at her. The others thought they were beggars and tried to shoo them away, while my friend was very disorientated as they kept tugging her and turning her around.

Eventually a man came over and chased them away. It wasnt til then that they realised the girls had been in her bag and taken her purse. Luckily it only had about 15E in but it was very upsetting for them all.

Later on they saw the two girls with a group of other girls being led by an older woman, so it looked like an organised gang.

Please be VERY careful. We were just glad it happened at the end of our stay and not the beginning as she could have lost so much more. Apart from that one incident we all felt very safe out and about and had a really good time.

i visited rome quite a few years ago and the same thing almost happened to me.the circumstances were exactly the same so i totally agree with this warning!!

Hey there where you are staying is around a 10-15 min walk to the collesium/forum. The area where you are staying does to be fair have a bad name especialy round the train station at night. But i have stayed near here aswell a few times (going back in 3 weeks time) and have never had a problem, to be honest i think as long as you dont wander around at 1 in the morning out side the station shouting im a tourist nick my camera you will be fine! But like any big city keep a look out. the usual crime in rome is pickpocketing rahter than violant muggings like here in london.
Taxis fair, should be around 30-35 dont pay muchmore than this!
Have a good time and enjoy your selves Italians are very friendly and are used to tourists in rome.
The best advice i can give you is to invest in a realy good guide book like one of the lonely planet guides.

During the day does the area look ok ? appearance wise?
We are only there for one night and the hotel looked fine and for the
money couldnt complain just wondered if there was any drawbacks.
Can you recommend any restaurants or bars at all suitable for couples ?

Hey stitch during the day the place looks pretty good! there is quite a famous church (its huge compared to ours) called bassilica santa maria maggiore just around the corner which is outstanding inside and out.
for a good meal for a couple well i would either suggest a wlak down via carlo alberto (near where you are staying where there are some good restarants. or taking a taxi into trestavere which has loads of good pizzerias and restaurants! Icant really remeber specific restaurant names or even the names of the streets they are on (im rubbish with names!)
but to be fair even if you just wonder around the streets you will find restarants on everywhere (you will have trouble choosing!) and its usually really hard to have a bad meal in italy!

With recent events happening in Rome, we thought it would be nice to do a city break there, Ryanair seem to have a good price on flights from our area (Teesside) however it means landing in Rome around midnight, so, questions;
Taxi from Ciampino Airport to Hotel, cost/ any problems at that time?
Arriving in the early hours to Rome, any problems? security?
Also, we thinking of booking hotel about 5k from Airport, is this area ok?

Have a look at http://www.adr.it which is the official website of both Rome's airports (Fiumicino and Ciampino). You will need to select Rome Ciampino. This should give you some ideas about transport links to the city centre - and you can always send a message in English to the information desk for specific information if not found on the site. Look at Ryanair's 'destinations' thread - they may have a specific bus service.

I would think it would not be the most inviting welcome to Rome arriving at Termini station at about 2 am. It's not frequented by the most charming folk either at that time. Consider getting a first night hotel near the airport, and then arrive refreshed in the city next morning. Incidentally please take as little of value with you as possible and beware of pickpockets. This really is an annoying feature of Rome which does not help its image in the eyes of its visitors!

I must admit to being a little put off by the thought of arriving there in the early hours and of the reports of pickpockets in Rome but in many major cities these days this problem may exist. However Rome does seem like an excellent city to visit and we are still looking to travel there.

i recently travelled from teesside to ciampino airport, arriving at midnight. i travelled with 7 other girls and we got the terravision bus which stops right outside terminal and drops you off next to the bus terminal in the city centre. there were plenty taxis around when we came out of the terminal so i wouldnt be worried about it if i were you. but to beware of pickpockets as my friend was mugged by teenage girls while we were there.

We have stayed at what was the Es Hotel which is in Termini. Parts of it do look a bit rough and there are some unsavoury characters around, but nothing too bad (yikes, I sound like my mum ).

We loved the walk to the colloseum and the palatine which is about 15 minutes through a park, as we were there for the ancient side of Rome. There was a lovely pizzeria on the way too next to a small park which we had the most gorgeous pizza and pasta. Very reasonable prices and lovely staff. Just cant remember the name as it was a couple of years ago
