The Trevi Fountain is beautiful, however, your best bet would be to take a midnight stroll to the fountain as anytime before that if you can find an empty spot to go down on one knee you'll be proposing infront of 100's of people as it gets mighty busy.

I think midnight at the Trevi fountain sounds idillic, she's bound to say yes.

Good luck

Hi

I'm travelling to Rome for the weekend in mid November. It's my girlfriends birthday and it's a suprise (she thinks we're off to Liverpool for the weekend). Thing is i plan to propose to her out there and therefore i want the trip to go without a hitch.

Key for me is the hotel, I'm looking at about the 4 star mark and the best i've found so far is the La Griffe? Anyone know anything about it? Or do you have anywhere else to reccommend?

Any other tips for the weekend welcome - thank you!

Hi,
We are off to Rome in 3 weeks time and I wanted to get some advice. We will have 3 full days there and obviously want to do all the sights but I'm unsure what order to do them in. We probably wont use public transport as the hotel we are staying in is next to the opera house which is apparently very central and we'd prefer to walk if it's only half hour or so. Is there an order that would make sense to do things in? I don't know if some sights are on one side of the city and some on the other. Also, which are the ones that you would say are the 'musts'?We want to fit in as much as possible so any advice would be great. We are not arriving till 9:30pm, so are most eateries likely to be shut or should we be able to still get food? Also, we have arranged a transfer using 'Terravision'. Has anyone ever used it and is it any good?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm suddenly panicking as we don't have a clue what to do and how to go about it!
Thanks guys,
Becki.

p.s. any idea as to how much sights cost to visit and how much food etc is would be good? How much are we likely to need for 3 days?
Thanks!!!

I believe that there is an open top bus tour of the hop on hop off variety which is a MUST for getting your bearings.

If you are in the area of TERMINI STATION, central bus and train station please BEWARE of PICKPOCKETS and other hustlers. This is NOT a nice area at night.

You will need to take a bus to visit the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel if you so wish (direct bus from the station) as it's a long haul especially if it's hot.

If you are really bothered about finding a late meal, bring some extra sarnies etc with you.

You will need bottled water as Roman stuff doesn't taste too good, and watch out for folk beating the lights especially those on two wheels!

Sorry if this is a bit negative, as I haven't had very good experiences of Rome and I've been at least 3 times.

Hi becky, there is a load of info in this thread if you CLICK ON ME! this should get you started. ive checked online to see where abouts you are staying (just southwest of termini train station) The area immediatly around the station has a reputation for pickpockets as does the whole transport system. I must say though its not as bad as it was a few years ago and although i wouldnt spend the night around the station flashing my cash and camera around its not half as bad as everyone says. Having said that like any big city, watch your bags, only take out what you need for the day dont flash your expensive camera and mobile phone around etc. The biggest rip off in rome these days seems to be taxi drivers who have a habit of making up the price as they go along if they think you are a tourist, agree a price before or get an estimate from them.
The easiest way ive found to get to the vatican is by using the metro and you can get off at cipro musei vaticani for the museum (sistine chapel etc) and then walk down and around for saint peters (the ridicously big church) and then to go back get the metro from ottaviano san petro.
I would advise a good guide book i like the lonely planet guide to rome and the best of pocket guide by lonely planet is perfect.
I would take each day as it comes musts are the vatican, imperial forum and colleseum going inside is not 100% essential but it is worth a look just to get a feel for the size. that would keep you going for a couple of days for your last day then either shopping down via del corso or take in some more sights.
I also dissagree about the water and find it to be really clean (rome is famous for its water) and refreshing, you can safely drink the water from the little fountains you see dotted around the place.
I hope this (and the other threads in this section) helps you, have a great time and enjoy you might get lucky and get some mild weather aswell

From where you are staying the best option is day 1 do the Coliseum, Forum and then the Victor Emmanuel Monument. With what is left of the day, most of it spent in the Forum, have a wander around the Piazza Venezia and the shops. Some good restaurants off there.

Day 2 head for the Piazza Venezia again but this time walk up it and take detours to the Trevi Fountain, Panthenon, Piazza Navone and the Ferrari shop  End up at the Spanish Steps and look for somewhere to eat at the top of the steps (Too dear at the bottom).

Day 3 head for the Vatican. Do St Peters first then the Cistine Chapel but be prepared for long queues and a lot of walking.

When you finish there pop down to Hadrians Castle and the river then back up to St Peters for nightfall when the Vatican is an amazing sight all lit up.

Plenty of pics here: to whet the appetite.

If you get hungry and need a bite to eat quick then try the Bibite vans. Most are quite reasonable for food on the hoof.

Sorry Jessop about my misinformation about the water .... I got food poisoning from both the food and water, but as that was some time ago, I'm delighted things have improved. Mea Culpa

alsaciene its ok  to be fair to what i said about the drinking fountains on the street, there are some which look pretty iffy and wouldnt go near them but most and esspecially those around the busy areas are safe to use.
also would like to say the post above that has a top itinery and i would deffinatly second those ideas! have a good trip!
