The whole experience of Rome is special. We liked to wander down the narrow streets to find somewhere to eat, but if its a special meal then eating in one of the Piazza's is lovely.

Thanks for that too Sarah. We're going around about the same time as emelou. You're helping us both/all out there. I'm really looking forward to it now. :) Albeit only for a few nights,in my case.

Hi

In Rome for a few days in a couple of weeks and looking for reputable shuttle companies to take us from the airport to our hotel, any advice at all ?

Secondly, are there any cheap designer outlets like we have in the Uk and USA and if so, any websites or addresses available,

thanks

Hi all,

This will be the first time in around 10years i have been on a holiday, so i want to try to get the itinerary right.

I'm looking to travel to Rome for 5 days and have a general idea of places to visit, e.g. colliseum and piazza novona etc.

My main problem is not knowing enough places to visit, how to get there, i.e. prices and times for trains or buses, where to prebook visits, and most importantly, where to eat!!. Also, does anyone know of where i could prebook an opera concert?

I was hoping whether anybody could possibly outline a 5 day itnierary for me and could also help me with my problems above.

Kind regards

Hi there pink, as mentioned do check the other posts for info.
Its very hard to recomend to someone where a good place to eat is in rome as its nearly impossible to remember the street names and how to get there (although a couple of places i might be able to explain how to get there). I can recommend areas to go and eat where the food is good.
On the flip side i can recommend places to definatly avoid at all costs (rip off prices and rubbish food)
Asfor an itinery, well you dont really need one to be honest, just pick a place to visit for the day (the vatican is a full day out for example) and see how you go, if you have more energy then head off somewhere else.
i feel rome is the kind of place (and alot of people will agree) where you can wonder around between the famous sites and find a little and sometimes big gem on every corner a regimented itinery might miss these out.
If you really want a rough itinery then i would suggest something like this,

Day 1
colosseum
It is just about worth going inside this massive ampitheatre but its not compulsary, also if want to pay an extra 10eouro you can get a tour, personaly i wouldnt bother and get irritated by the tour guides who keep harrasing you!
Forum
you should go and see this ancient centre of rome etc
palatine hill
Palaces of passed emporers

day 2
Vatican museums (sistine chapel etc)
well worth it but check it is open as sometime closed for bizzare holidays.
st peters (rather large church!)

day 3
I would clump the below together as they are in the same sort of area and can be done together in one day (with good shoes though)
pantheon
spanish steps
trevi fountain
Shopping on via del corso (like oxford street) if you still have energy.

day 4
Day on the beech! at sperlonga (one day some one will believe me on this one and do it!)
Take napoli train from termini staion to fondi and catch the local bus into sperlonga see beech fall in love and never wnat to come home again!

day 5
shopping? relaxing im sure you will find something to do

I havent mentioned some places such as piazza navona, campo di fiori as i would recomend seeing those in the evening after a meal.

As for eating out do not under any curcumstances eat around by the colloseum or the restaurants near to the vatican as they are really bad and extortionatly priced just to catch unaware tourists like us :D

Do eat in trastevere, this area has the some of the best restaurants in
rome and is where most romans willgo to eat in the evening. i would recomend starting at piazza trellusa and just wonder around the mediaval streets until you find something you like.

Hope this all helps please bear in mind these are just my opinions, but please do bear in mind what i am saying and make your own judgments

you will be laughing, tyr and ask at your hotel if they know a place called popi popi one of the best pizzerias around, ive been there a few times but with my italian friend, i can never find it on my own!

Hey Jessop,

that's fantastic, i couldn't have asked for more!!
I will definatley take up your advice about the beech (and how to get there) and also about eating around tourist areas.

Cheers, much appreciated!

no problem. To get to the town i mention (for the beech) the train to catch usualy leaves roma termini at 45mins to the hour heading towards napoli (or naples to us) its about an hour and a bit. the bus from the station to town will arrive soon after the train and much the same coming back although i cant remember the times back into rome again.
Also must add that there is free areas of beach in sperlonga but it is well worth paying to use the private beaches as you get proper sunbathing chairs and also an umbrella to get some well needed shade, its not expensive and i think worth it.

Taking partner to Rome in December for 3 nights where I plan to pop the big question--anyone got any ideas on where the most romantic/atmospheric place would be to take the plunge?????
Reply
it has got to be at the Trevi Fountain :D
the proposal- not the plunge

Hardly romantic if you are surrounded by hordes of tourists taking photos all over the place.

Go for a posh hotel [Intercontinental] and see if you can blag an upgrade to a suite.
