My husband and his brother want to do something special for their parents' golden wedding anniversary next year, and are keen to send them to Rome...however, their parents are obviously quite elderly and their dad is carer for their mum who has multiple sclerosis. (Edited to add - she can walk with a walking stick so no question of wheel chair access) - So, I suggested we all went together as a family at Christmas time, to make it easier for my father in law and to make it more special.
The question is - is it feasible?
How difficult is it to get around to see the sites with someone who is quite frail and slow. Where is best to stay - centrally and take taxis to sites, or get a place out of the city and drive in? What is Rome like at Christmas? Gorgeous, chaotic, expensive, quiet? Would it be possible to attend a Papal mass?
How easy is it to get accommodation for 10-12 people in or near Rome? We want to keep the cost down as much as possible as me and my husband and his brother are paying for everyone (kids etc) so an apartment or villa type thing rather than a hotel would be best for us.
Any feedback at all welcomed - thanks in advance!
Janine
I have merged all the Rome posts into this topic so you may find some useful information in earlier posts. You should also check out our City Breaks forum where there is a sticky topic on Rome.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Rome in this time?
We were reading today that Rome slows down during august and lots of places will be closed - is this true?
I have also merged your post with a topic already open in this forum on Rome. You may find some useful information in earlier posts.
I have just booked some cheap flights with rynair for the beginning of Feb07 for 4 days to Rome. We have never been before and need advice on a quality BUDGET hotel near the trevi fountain. Can you also advise if it would be better to hire a car as we are coming into the Campion (??? I know this is the wrong spelling) airport. Also how much spending money will we need. Thanks as always for your responses.
I would totaly not bother hiring a car in Rome, the traffic is just stupid and they drive like mentalists. Parking is impossible and im sure you cantr drive in the centre due to restrictions during the day.
I would recomend either catching the bus into town or taking a taxi (see offer click here! sorry just plugging) hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice. Any body suggest a cheap quality hotel Thanks
Hi, am taking my children to Rome this weekend for the first time and wondered if anyone knows how much the entry is into the colleseum
A tip I had from a travel agent friend was to search Hotel Connect, you will get a list of hotels, buget or otherwise, for you to rifle through,I then went through them all on 'Tripadvisor' to get the reviews on each hotel, made my own mind up and ,as we are going Friday, it's now fingers crossed!
Hope this helps,
Donna
Thanks for the tip Donna , that is what I did and have booked the Best Western Hotel Spring House which seems to have a good write up. Just wondering inf anyone has been to this hotel and can give me some advice/info
the colloseum costs 11 euros but is free to EU nationals under the age of 18
wow! that seems really cheap! thanks fiona! i thought it would be really expensive, i suppose Coventry counts as E.U! Do I just have the kids passports to hand as proof?
Have booked to stay at the Palladium Palace in Rome myself Janet (although I think it sounds more like a Sunday evening tv show than a hotel!)I gather it's a bit like a shot in the dark, have changed hotels twice already, then read bad reviews about them, panicked, then changed again! So hopefully it's 3rd time lucky Anyone stayed at this hotel?
Thanks, would you say it would be worth pre booking, does that cut back on queues or would we still have to anyway?
when we went we could have walked right in- mind you it was lashing of rain in February, so perhaps I am not the best one to ask
We just walked up, paid our money and walked in, no queue, but it may depend on the time of day. The one regret I have is that I didn't hire the CD self-guided tour as I'm sure that would have made it even more interesting.
Thanks thats a great help, do you hire the cd for the tour from the colleseum itself?
Yes you can hire it when you pay your admission. I think we went mid-afternoon in May and it wasn't too busy.
