just came back yesterday after spending 3 nights there. As said before watch your valuables esspecially on the metro, Always keep your bags in front of you (dont wair small packpaks on your back on the metro as this is a dream for pickpockets, if you have a wallet or purse in your pocket put your hand on it so no one can get to it! Have a great time as long as you are sensible you will ave a fab time!

Hello fellow travellers, it's my first time on this, I am from the beautiful country of Ireland, I was in Rome from April30 - May5th, I had a wonderful time, such an amazing city. I stayed in a hostel come hotel called Falwty towers, it's near the termin, very enjoyable stay, nice staff, room. I went to the Bassillica on the Sunday, saw the pope at his window, pretty cool, went into the underground tombs and then inside the church, On Monday I went to the catacombs, very interesting, Tuesday, the colessumn, which was amazing and on Wednesday I went on a tour of the Jewish Ghetto, very interesting, I will certainly be going back again. 8)

Hi all,

Massive rugby fan, and my partner has booked a 5 day break in Rome at the end of June :) . Fantastic, but unfortunately it also coincides with the second Lions rugby test against The All Blacks :( . So was just wondering if anyone knows of a bar/sports cafe in the centre of Rome where I can catch the game ? Because of the time difference the kick off will be at 09:10 in Rome !!

Any advice on things to do / not to do would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Sean

Hi!

I went to Rome with Ryanair in February, and also used the 'terrovision' bus laid on by ryan air, at around 15 euros pp return, to get to the city centre. We stayed in The Starhotel Metropole hotel in via nationale, about 5 mins walk from termini, and although we were on our guard, felt comfortable walking to our hotel, and around in the evenings.

Our hotel was quite central to everything really, apart from the vatican, which is over the river, with Santa Maria Maggiore literally just round the corner, and we were within 10-15 mins stroll from the Trevi Fountain, Collosseum, Forum, Monument of Vittorio Emmanuel and the Spanish Steps. There were also plenty of nice little restaurants to eat in close by.

Hi,
We also went to Rome just before Xmas via Ciampino and the terravision and had no problems at all.
But those pickpockets - within 10 mins of getting to Rome they were targeting you - the whole holiday was spent with pockets safety pinned shut.

Hi Les and Kev, so it's not just me who uses the safety pin method, in fact it's not just a safety pin it's a nappy pin and I also have a big kilt pin that we use in emergencies along side the nappy pin, think it's a real shame that we have to do these things on holiday but that is the way things are so better safe than sorry, I to spent the whole week in Tuscany the other week doing this as there were so many dodgy looking people hanging around all over the place, I do it in Malta to but to a much lesser extent.

We've just got back from a week in Rome. Saw no pickpockets but plenty of beggars (just say a firm but polite no).

Stayed in Cinecitta area at a B&B (Arancio). Lovely apartment, lovely people (lift from and to Ciampino) 5 minutes from Subaugusta Metro station. Good eateries nearby but still only 20 minutes to centre. Found the Metro pretty safe. No worse than London. Just do the obvious: don't flaunt it, and keep valuable etc out of site.

There is a fairly visible but unobtrusive police presence round all the major sites. But after dark don't go to down back alleys! Do as you would in any big city. We had no problems and found the Roman people charming; far better than the Parisians!

Enjoy yourself.

We are thinking of booking this hotel for an easter break. Has anyone stayed there or have any comments on its position to the main sites and nice restaurants etc.

Thanks

We arrive at 11.40 pm at Rome Ciampiano airport...has anyone used a reputable car transfer company before? Dont fancy getting taxis, buses etc

Also, can anyone recommend a nice, romantic place to eat near Via Vittoria Colonna?

Any information or help would be gratefully recieved!

Thanks

We used the following firm http://www.romashuttle.com

They were punctual both to and from the airport, and it worked out actually cheaper than the quote we'd had from a normal taxi firm. Just fill in the online booking from and they will give you a quote. Both cars were Mercedes, very clean and tidy.

We are hoping to visit, for the first time, Rome in October.

We are booked into the Alpha Via Veneto.

Has anyone any tips for either Rome or the Alpha Via Veneto?

Cheers

Rome is quite easy to navigate on foot or using the local buses or metro. We bought a map locally and managed to see most of the main sites in one day.

One thing I would warn against is pick pockets and bag snatchers. Only carry enough money for that day and leave any valuables in the hotel.

Thanks for that Luci - it's good to know that we can get around all the sights in a short period of time as we are only there for 3 days.

Pickpockets and bag snatchers are subjects that keep cropping up a lot in relation to Rome.

we went to rome 4 years ago in october, getting about is very easy, we went in a taxi once it was better than alton tower rides!!

if you are there on a wednesday morning go to st peters square as the pope i beleive does papal mass, it is very moving even if you are not religious, i was reduced to tears as we didn't plan this just ambled there in the morning.

the trevi fountain is beautiful but i thought nicer at night, the colousem is a must to do but best of all is just to drink coffee and people watch or traffic watch its amazing!
