When I first saw the chains I felt the same, but when you actually see how strong they are it made me wonder that if they wanted to escape I'm sure they would be able to. Couldn't believe the size of the tree the male one was picking up and carrying.

I suppose it is like whales and dolphins in water parks, there never gonna be free again as long as they live but so long as they are'nt abused in fron tof people ( or hopefully at all ) then good luck to the Goans that operate this for the tourists.
the funniest thing of all is the folks who are scared of spiders... I think I'd be more scared of the damn elephant myself with its size and all...
Hi....can anyone tell me whether these elephant trips are the same ones that Daytrippers do?? Kali River Lodge, Dandeli??...or are they somewhere else???
The elephants that we arranged for the wedding and the other poster which had a ride was done by the monks at the temple near the saturday night market.
I used Footprints in Candolim opposite the Mango Grove restaurant. The trip was called "Eye of the Tiger" which cost £60. This includes return rail journey to Udipi in Karnataka (5 hours journey) with packed lunches, 2 nights in a good hotel with breakfast and evening meals, lunch on the 2nd day, visits to an elephant camp, a safari park to see Tigers and Lions and a medieval Krishna temple. The only extra charges were Rs150/- camera fees at the two animal camps, an elephant ride (Rs50/-) and drinks with our evening meal (no comment!). We were looked after from start to finish by our escorts Agnelo and Abu who were both excellent.
Hi Amz....long shot I know...but is Abu the one and same person that we once went on a trip with??? Talks for England (and India! )...think he had some connection with some american film star at one stage?? (on his tour or was a guide to them or something???? ) VERY nice person!!!
Abu is short for something much longer and unpronounceable. He was chatty, amusing and a very nice man. Not aware of any connections with film stars but he did say he used to be a mahout whilst living in Karnataka. He was obviously used to dealing with elephants and even issued commands for them to shake hands etc.
We went to the Sakahara Spice Plantation at Ponda. There are two elephants there, seemingly living the life of Riley. And for 500 rupees, my son washed the female down at the river. And she washed him right back - possibly the only decent wash he had in three weeks
Brilliant day out!!
I can put you in tuoch with someone who runs elephant washing trips without the overnight stay and hence without spiders
we are wanting to go on the elephant trip. Any tips on how to book it i.e. prices etc. we would prefer to book our own accommodation and maybe just get a taxi or jeep - does anyone have telephone no or email for the sanctuary so we can book in goa ..... any comment much appreciated.
Do you mean this Jungle Trip ..
thanks pam7 the trip looks really great.... i'm not sure if this is the same trip or not... I believe theres one just outside goa in karnatika and you get to wash the elephants.. it might be a little too far to travel though and this one you sent me isn't too bad travel wise. thanks very much
Ask a taxi driver to take you to the Sahakari Spice Plantation at Ponda. You get a tour round the plantation, plus lunch, and on the same site there are two elephants. For 500 rupees you get to take one down to the river and wash it. I think you can ride the other one.
This one is 2 and half hour coach trip away....swim with elephants, wash them (and be washed by them!!), ride them! Yoga the next morning in the grounds of one of the oldest temples.....fabulous food....stay in mud huts....visit local school...2 whole days worth of events. More elephants on the second day too! Fantastic trip! If you want I can pm you some photos!
not going until november and getting excited just thinking about the elephant trip thanks again pam7
