Hi! We're staying in Torquay in May for a week. Can anyone recommend good pubs? We're middle-aged and dont want noisy, disco-type pub, but we still like a lively atmosphere and good food. Will appreciate any recommendations. Thanx Gill
There is a Weatherspoons pub on the front with good food cheap beer,

I live in Torquay the Wetherspoons mentioned, is down on the Harbourside, called 'The London Inn'. On a Saturday Night however, it is just as bad as any other pub as this is where everybody hangs out, down at the harbour. All the clubs and pubs are there. You could sit outside many pubs down at the harbour and therefore only need to go to the bar for drinks. It's always sunny down here, it is the English Riviera.
There is Brewers Quaye which is a part of the Brewers Fayre chain on the other side of the harbour. Other than that you could go up around the Babbacombe area to find some pubs or just outside Torquay. Coombe Cellars springs to mind!

We have been to Devon for the last two years and have had a great time. We stayed in Shaldon and found a great pub right on the river. It's called Combe Cellars and is a Brewers Fayre pub. It's a very big, cosy pub that has lots of tables overlooking the water (fantastic views). The food is great and extremelly well priced. The pub is on the road towards Combeinteinhead (road runs parallel with the river) and just look out for another sharp turning road on your right where you will see the sign to the pub.
We also went on the train from Paignton to Dartmouth and then got the ferry across to the town. It was a trip if the weather isn't great.

I live in Devon and cannot recommend Coombe Cellers. Went there about a month ago and had one of the most tastless disgusting meals ever, vowed never to visit there again!
torquay is really the equivalent to an ibiza in the uk?
If you mean - is it full of drunken teenagers on stag/hen parties and fights around the harbour, then yes, it is like ibiza!

Chris, In all honesty i don't think that torquat is very different to many seaside resorts at the weekend, Blackpool,Brighton, Bournemouth, Southend,Torquay..... all much of a muchness really, we locals kind of feel invaded at the weekends and avoid the town centre like the plague!! - in fact that applies for most of the summer holiday season - we reclaim the town when all the grockles have gone home!!!

Without wishing to sound impertinent - it may be useful to have an idea what sort of age group you fall into to point you in the right direction.
But off the top of my head The Victoria & Derwent Hotels may be appropriate, they have indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam rooms, gym, indoor bowls plus ten pin bowling, any number of other activities. Are just off the seafront - walking distance to town, the theatre, etc. I believe they also do specialised breaks. Hope that is of some use.

There will be about 20 of us, were not that fussy regarding the type of food all meat eaters and no diabetics etc. Price £30 - £40 per head. There will be 7 kids from age 4 to 16. date is in mid august.
Does anyone what the orchid restaurant is like?
