Very strange. I ve never heard of any malaria cases there ( or anywhere for that matter ) - I was even in Fayoum just a few months ago, had a lunch at the famous old ( and rather run down ) Auberge. If there was malaria there it would stand to reason that it would be also be at Giza, just 60 km away. I don t think the info is correct.

Thanks for that GW, I wonder how many doctors, nurses or whoever, just look at the map and see an indication of malaria, then tell you that you need protection?

Swissinai, you will of course forgive me, if the next time that we meet, I dowse you in tonic water, or whatever it is that gets rid of malaria!

Hi All,

Went to the Doctors last week for my jabs for the hol, was recommended to get them done at least 8 weeks before we travel....

I was advised there were four which you need to have for Egypt:

Diphtheria , Tetnanus , polio & Hepatitus

Luckily I only needed two as I'd had the other two when I was at school.... just one in each arm, pain free apart from achiness the day after...... and they were also free. Aparently some Gps charge, so you need to check with yours.

I enquired abaout Malaria and I was advised that being in a resort meant low risk and wouldn't need to take anything, however if you're planning on travelling round quite a bit, you will need to take pre-cautions and I was told that if I wanted to be safe I could get a course of malaria tablets over the counter at the pharmacy!

Hi Briar

Last time i went to Egypt i only need the ones you mentioned and i had to pay for them all, also i didnt need malaria tablets i think it depends on your Gp as a friend of mine ws going to Cancun last year and got told she neede malaria tablets yet i was there 3 years ago and was told i never needed them. Thank goodness we dont need malaria tablets cause we went to Kenya a few years ago and after paying about £48 for Larium tablets i had a very bad experience on them and the day we came home it was on the news they were to be banned and we were still to take them for another 2-3 weeks.I have yet to ask my Gp which vaccinations ive to get but he usually says if your in a built up resort and not travelling into the wilderness depending on the country youll only need the minimum jabs.

This all sounds like the same advice we got.
Ditheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio - these are recommended just about everywhere and are, of course, given to infants here in the UK too.
So if you keep up to date all you should need are typhoid and hepatitis jabs for Egypt. Even this is likely to be overkill in the major resort hotels.

We were told some GPs do them free - it's cheaper than having to treat a patient who catches something on holiday. Others will charge - it's up to the individual clinic.
Reply
again some gps do charge for almost everything but there is a move on within the travle health clinics to stop a lott of this as gps get paid to give certain vaxcines by thje govt/health authorty and if caught charging for said vaxes can be charged with fraud also a lot depends on your occupation as with some jobs ie nurses you get extra vaxs free while some have to pay
ie you want to become a nurse but havnt started trainning but want hep b cover you can be charged
while jo bloggs has started training gets his hep b free as he has been in collage 1 day and was told he needed the cover
lol about as clear as mud now

I had my injections about 3 weeks ago.

I had to submit a form into the doctors first for the nurse to have a look at.

All they said I needed was Diphtheria , Tetnanus , polio, Hepatitus A and Typhoid these are what I had.

3 injections in total first one was Diphtheria, Hepatitus A and polio in 1, then Tetnanus. Third was Typhoid.

Only the Typhoid one hurt felt like someone had punched me and gave me a dead arm. Only lasted 2 to 3 days. All where free as well. I did ask about Yellow fever but she said it wasn't needed for Egypt.

Hi, Katie and I have just come back from the Doctors, went to get a
Hep A booster. Whilst we were there once the nurse found out we were going to Egypt she was adamant that we must have typhoid as well. So had both whilst we were there, mine was a combined one but poor Katie had to have one in each arm. Only good news is that it didn`t cost anything.

Julie,

Been to Luxor loads of times and never been advised to get anything for West Nile Virus. I seem to remember seeing that it is now more of a problem in North America than Egypt.

Please help.

I'm due to go to Sharm El Sheikh on 08/05/05, this is a late deal.
Do I have to have any jabs?? I know there are many that are advised, but I have a problem - needles, I can't stand needles, I fainted just thinking about a blood test I had to give last month!!

What have I got to have??? Or is it too late now??

Please help - many thanks.

It's probably a bit too late now anyway, as you need them at least 6 weeks before. Go and see the nurse at your surgery though.

Bob,

Where you staying out of interest?, I'm flying out on the 8th from Luton. Regarding the

I had the same but in two injections: Hep A and Typhoid / Tetanus, Diptheria and Polio. (but they would not give Katie a combined one she had to have Hep A booster in one arm and Typhoid in the other, poor little thing she was very brave.)

I went last week for my jabs and i fly this sat, so it wasnt too late for the jabs i had. It was a combined Typhoid and Hep A.

Didnt have to have the others as they were still covered from 8 years ago when i was in school! :o

Call up your local vacination clinic, they will tell you it may be easier than you think, it was only tiny jab.. but then i dont mind needles.

Good luck
