Thanks Luci

I'll hold out for a teeshirt.

At least Phil and I have something in common, LOTUS. Mind you my car only has Lotus suspension and steering, not the whole car.!!

Still, theres still time for more people to surface.

The suspension and steering are the important parts in a Lotus though, they make it handle the way it does. Luckily it's a bit more responsive through the twisties than the emerald

Hi first Med Cruise , do they provide towels on the pool deck?, How formal are the formal evenings? Anyone else going on this date.
We are looking forward to the cruise but don't realy know a lot about the Emerald , how things work etc. Are there any websites with good information or can HT Cruisers come up with the goods once again.
Thanks in Anticipation.

Hi Kilty Jock

Fat Andy is our resident expert on the Emerald so hopefully he will be able to answer specific questions on the ship.

Pool towels are normally provided on deck. Formal evenings are not too formal. Some people wear dinner jackets and bow ties while others wear a lounge suit or even just a shirt and tie.

If you haven't done so already, you can read our reviews of the Emerald here:

We have booked a 2 week cruise on the emerald on 26th Aug we were very lucky to get a free all inclusive. we have just booked a inside cabin My husband is disabled and i was just wondering if you can give us any tips on maybe a good cabin which will be fairly close to the lifts.Rod can walk with a stick but we was on a cruise before and it was quite away to the lifts I have read that sometimes you get an upgrade with Thomsons can anyone shead any light on this for me Thanks for your time

Hi Gail and welcome to HT!

You could contact your travel agent and request a cabin near the lifts, but this would probably only be a request and not a guarantee.

We also sailed on the Thomson Spirit last year with a lady who is disabled and walks with a stick. She managed to get around without too much difficulty. She was able to hire a wheelchair for going ashore which I think cost £12 for the day.

The Emerald is an older ship and was never really designed for wheelchairs. there are however a few handy points that should help you both.

Ensure that at port, the crew are aware that Rod has a stick, the gangplank is hard to walk up and down for many people. There is a crew access point on deck 2. This offers a reasonably flat exit point at any port except tender ports. This is not always made apparent to everyone. The entrance to this access point is via a door on deck 2 directly opposite the lift, but does involve a bit of a walk from there through to the exit point, with an uneven floor.

Secondly, if they cannot get you a cabin near a lift, there is a small ray of light. Always travel from cabin to lift via the resturant and show lounge deck. This is the one floor where there are ample seats all the way from front to back of the ship, so no matter how far the lift is, you can rest as many times as you wish.

Another good point is, at the evening meals, don't queue with all the people down the hall. One, its pointless, two it means standing around. You can either sneak in the back door of the resturant (near the trees at the end of the queue) or wait in the bar till the queue goes down.

Thanks for your information andy Its ok but Rod as only not been unable to get around for about the past 12 months. So this is all very new to us as well we are not used to worrying about being disabled I am sure we will have a great time. the one big bonus is the all inclusive we went with Costa last year and our onboard spend was quite hefty Have you anymore good tips regarding the emerald most of the reviews i have read are pretty good just cant wait to go now
Tanks again Gail

Gail and Rod, Have you considered paying the supplement to choose a cabin near to the lifts? It might be difficult to change cabins at the start of your holiday when they've all been assigned. Have you heard much about upgrades :?: We had one once, but don't know how often it happens.

There is someone on the ship with responsibility for people with mobility difficulties so it might be an idea to let Thomson's know that you may need extra help. The same at the airport.

I noticed that there are usually several strong seamen around the gangplank, who are willing and able to give passengers a shove or a steadying hand where needed.

On the Emerald we had a tender to one port. An older lady, who wasn't very nimble, badly wanted to go ashore with her friend. I didn't think she'd ever make it into the tender, but the sailors knew better, and within seconds she was sitting next to her friend on the seat in the tender. The look of satisfaction and pleasure on that lady's face will stay with us for a long time.

We are going on this cruise in June Pearls of the Agean. We have a 14 year old daughter - can anyone give any information for dress codes on the night time. Anyone did any of the tours? - any help you can give would be great

Well we did an Emerald tour of Athens a couple of years ago - don't know if it will help. There was one that went up to the Acropolis, and one that we went on went around the city in a coach, we saw the changing of the guards and stayed a while in a car park at the foot of the Acropolis, looking up at it. The best bit was going down the subway station in the main square - you could see a glassed off cross section of the excavations for the station, including roads, pots, a grave, and all the different stratas of soil and rock, as well as a few artifacts in cases. It was great but ours was the only coach that went there.

We were told afterwards that there's a metro station in the dock area, near to the ship, and you can travel all around Athens on a day ticket for only a couple of euros. Guess it's gone up now, but maybe worth checking out :?:
