We have promised (reluctantly) daughter that we would look into the idea of going skiing next spring (it will have to be Feb half term, ££££!!!). I can't think of anything much than spending my hard earned cash being cold and sliding down hills for a week, but there you go!

Any advice/ recommendations for resorts for absolute (reluctant) beginers?

Hi,
Don't know if this helps but we're in a similar situation !

Wanted to go to somewhere for the snow more than the skiing so we've booked with Thomson's Ski and it's a resort for 'beginners' in Austria - St Wolfgang. Apparently you can ski if you like and we have also booked a Winter Wonderland package so we have 5 days of winter activities ---- I think its 2 hours per day of cross country skiing, nordic walking, a snow walk and curling etc etc. Seemed like an idea gentle introduction!

Happy hunting

That seems like a nice idea. Though my first reaction was Austria, £££££££!

Yip!

Then again, I'd been looking at Iceland before this and it was alot cheaper!
We're staying at the Cortisen and it looks great.

Dunno if this is of any use at all but we had looked at Lake Bled - have friends who had been there and loved it - I think it's Slovenia / Croatia - not too sure. Apparently it's beautiful and they do the Winter Wonderland Package there as well ......... I think they do a sleigh ride (ahhhhh).

Know what you mean about half term though ----- we have to go school holidays too and it makes a real difference with the price!

If its a real problem, try Shearings - they do 9 day coach holidays to these places and they are really cheap ....... I think you're talking less than £400 each for half board ..... and there isn't too much skiing!!!!!

Happy hunting!

I believe that skiiing in Bulgaria is supposed to be quite good and cheap, but I would never ski anywhere other than Colorado (Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge).....I lived there for 5 years and the skiing is awesome....

Don't know if you have booked anything but I can highly recommend Bulgaria. We went this year for our first time skiing and was a little sceptical. However, the tuition is some of the best in Europe and having talked to others that went for the first time this year to Andorra we are now more advanced than them!
Pamporovo is a lovely resort, lots of snow covered pinetrees. The hotels are good and didn't speak to anyone that had problems with the food.
Its cheap to get there, make sure you go with Balkan as they are so much cheaper than everyone else. Atleast if you don't like it you haven't spent the earth, don't know anyone that didn't enjoy it though & there was a wide range of ages there.
hope this helps!

I have 2 children aged 3 and 5 (well, they will be at the beginning of next year) and I'm so anxious to go ski-ing again (last time was Jan 2000). What is the minimum age for starting ski-ing. And can anybody recommend a resort and a hotel in February?

gaeilge

When my children were young (4/5) we took them to Soldau in Andorra the eldest went to ski school and the youngest ski kindergarden. In the kindergarden the children do normal nursery activities in addition to skiing for short periods in their dedicated area.

Depending on resort there may be kindergardens available. I would suggest visiting the travel agents and checking out a couple of brochures for details.

Thanks, muncher. I'll get a brochure from the travel agent's tomorrow!

Hi, me and my brother are looking at going skiing in Sauze D'Oulx in Italy in early March. Ive only ever been to Kitzebuhl which was brilliant but fancy a change.
Can anyone offer any info on the skiing, hotels, people, apres activities etc in Sauze D'Oulx??
Also as some events of the Winter Olympics are being staged here will that have any effect on skiing in early March (Approx 2 weeks after the Olympics finish)?

Cheers all

Jordy J, for sure the place will still be busy. Sauze (or "Suzy does it", as it is known) is part of the "Milky Way" ski are (La Via Lattia). There's plenty for every ability of skier in the resort. If you are a party animal then there's lots of places where you'll be up for it. On the other hand, if you prefer a quiet meal and a a small glass of the old "falling down water", then you find lots places to meet your tastes. I've been several times and have been disappointed with two accomodations. If you P.M me, I will tell you which ones, but have always enjoyed the skiing and the apres ski!!!

Tonale is fantastic for ski-ing, had a great ski-ing holiday there last year, lots of difficult runs and good slopes for beginners. The Hotel Sport has a good disco bar and the hotel next door ( forgotten the name ) also has a good disco bar.

Hi there,

Me and my boyfriend (in our early twenties) are looking to go away skiing at the end of january. First choice travel has offered us a very cheap deal in Niederau, Austria. Has anyone been there, and able to tell us what it is like? We are worried becuase it is so cheap! My boyfriend is a complete beginner and will need lessons, and this will be my third trip.

Thanks

Niederau has plenty for beginners. Its a small resort and although I usually ski in bigger areas, I managed to sneak an extra week in Niederau and surrounding ares last Feb. There's not much for advanced or experts, but I would imagine you'd want to meet up with your fella at lunchtime, so you could ski the local area in the morning then maybe take the bus to Auffach or Oberau in afternoon

We are off to Lapland in December, and we are going to book the learn to ski packages for myself, husband and daughter.

However, our 8 year old son wants to snowboard rather than ski.

Should you be able to ski before you can snowboard ????????

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi!
There is no requirement to learn to ski before snowboard as the styles are completely different. The only thing to remember is that with skiing there is a release system on the binding, on snowboards, however your feet are fixed, this means that if your son falls badly on ski's they will come off, on snowboards his feet will remain fixed to the board.
