I went on my first snowboarding holiday in March 2005 and had no idea what to expect. We picked Andorra (partly due to finances - it is much cheaper than many other resorts!). I was a little bit concerned as I had heard that snow could be sparse here, but our coach transfer from the airport was delayed by 5 hours due to avalanches and snow blocks - so definitely no problems here! In fact my first experience up a mountain was in blizzard conditions - very cool! But yes, the coach transfer of an average 3 hours from toulouse to resort is a bit of a pain.
We chose the Princesa Park which is a 4 * hotel. It was absolutely fantastic, particularly for the price we paid (£500 half board). The room was quite small, but very comfortable and extremely clean. The restaurant was lovely - all buffet food but very varied, and you could also get steak and kebabs cooked to order. The only problem is eating too much! you can also have champagne breakfast everyday if you like (only spotted this on the last day !) You do have to queue in the evening to get in the restaurant at peak times as it is a popular hotel, but you can book tables in the "posher" end of it if you want (in a raised section with nicer tables, linen and service).
The hotel has an in door pool (more of a "bathing" pool, not really big or deep enough to swim, with hydrotherapy chairs, two jacuzzis, two saunas, turkish bath and ice showers! Just the thing when your muscles are aching from boarding . However, the hotel does charge extra for this, can't remember the exact charge but somethign like £10 for 2 hours. We found this best on our last day when we came off the piste early - there was no-one else in there so had it all to ourselves!
Ski school was excellent, a very good resort for beginners. I'm told that it's not great for advanced, don't really know about intermediate (being a beginner myself!). But if it's your first or second time, definitely worth a try. The gondolas are a 2 minute walk from the hotel doors - not exactly ski in ski out as there are steps etc , but very convenient!
If you like nightlife, Arinsal has a small but lively centre. We spent most of our time in the Bar Solana (below hotel Solana) - try being suspended from a snowboard attached to the ceiling whilst drinking half a lager in under 5 seconds (Kelvin can!). And if you are handy with a hammer you will rule at the "Nail game" that is everywhere out there! But there are quieter options aswell, and the bar at the Princesa Park is very tranquil with piano music most evenings.
Overall, great beginners resort with a bit of everything, hotel very good value for money and we were told the best hotel in the resort. Will be going next year - Enjoy!
We have promised (reluctantly) daughter that we would look into the idea of going skiing next spring (it will have to be Feb half term, ££££!!!). I can't think of anything much than spending my hard earned cash being cold and sliding down hills for a week, but there you go!
Don't know if this helps but we're in a similar situation !
Wanted to go to somewhere for the snow more than the skiing so we've booked with Thomson's Ski and it's a resort for 'beginners' in Austria - St Wolfgang. Apparently you can ski if you like and we have also booked a Winter Wonderland package so we have 5 days of winter activities ---- I think its 2 hours per day of cross country skiing, nordic walking, a snow walk and curling etc etc. Seemed like an idea gentle introduction!
Happy hunting
That seems like a nice idea. Though my first reaction was Austria, £££££££!
Then again, I'd been looking at Iceland before this and it was alot cheaper!
We're staying at the Cortisen and it looks great.
Dunno if this is of any use at all but we had looked at Lake Bled - have friends who had been there and loved it - I think it's Slovenia / Croatia - not too sure. Apparently it's beautiful and they do the Winter Wonderland Package there as well ......... I think they do a sleigh ride (ahhhhh).
Know what you mean about half term though ----- we have to go school holidays too and it makes a real difference with the price!
If its a real problem, try Shearings - they do 9 day coach holidays to these places and they are really cheap ....... I think you're talking less than £400 each for half board ..... and there isn't too much skiing!!!!!
Happy hunting!
presto2's trip to st wolfgang sounds good.
i dont envy you having to go in half term i priced it up and it was £1300 more than to go january!

Hi
I believe that skiiing in Bulgaria is supposed to be quite good and cheap, but I would never ski anywhere other than Colorado (Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge).....I lived there for 5 years and the skiing is awesome....
Pamporovo is a lovely resort, lots of snow covered pinetrees. The hotels are good and didn't speak to anyone that had problems with the food.
Its cheap to get there, make sure you go with Balkan as they are so much cheaper than everyone else. Atleast if you don't like it you haven't spent the earth, don't know anyone that didn't enjoy it though & there was a wide range of ages there.
hope this helps!
I have 2 children aged 3 and 5 (well, they will be at the beginning of next year) and I'm so anxious to go ski-ing again (last time was Jan 2000). What is the minimum age for starting ski-ing. And can anybody recommend a resort and a hotel in February?
When my children were young (4/5) we took them to Soldau in Andorra the eldest went to ski school and the youngest ski kindergarden. In the kindergarden the children do normal nursery activities in addition to skiing for short periods in their dedicated area.
Depending on resort there may be kindergardens available. I would suggest visiting the travel agents and checking out a couple of brochures for details.
Thanks, muncher. I'll get a brochure from the travel agent's tomorrow!
Can anyone offer any info on the skiing, hotels, people, apres activities etc in Sauze D'Oulx??
Also as some events of the Winter Olympics are being staged here will that have any effect on skiing in early March (Approx 2 weeks after the Olympics finish)?
Cheers all
Jordy J, for sure the place will still be busy. Sauze (or "Suzy does it", as it is known) is part of the "Milky Way" ski are (La Via Lattia). There's plenty for every ability of skier in the resort. If you are a party animal then there's lots of places where you'll be up for it. On the other hand, if you prefer a quiet meal and a a small glass of the old "falling down water", then you find lots places to meet your tastes. I've been several times and have been disappointed with two accomodations. If you P.M me, I will tell you which ones, but have always enjoyed the skiing and the apres ski!!!
Tonale is fantastic for ski-ing, had a great ski-ing holiday there last year, lots of difficult runs and good slopes for beginners. The Hotel Sport has a good disco bar and the hotel next door ( forgotten the name ) also has a good disco bar.
Me and my boyfriend (in our early twenties) are looking to go away skiing at the end of january. First choice travel has offered us a very cheap deal in Niederau, Austria. Has anyone been there, and able to tell us what it is like? We are worried becuase it is so cheap! My boyfriend is a complete beginner and will need lessons, and this will be my third trip.
Thanks
Niederau has plenty for beginners. Its a small resort and although I usually ski in bigger areas, I managed to sneak an extra week in Niederau and surrounding ares last Feb. There's not much for advanced or experts, but I would imagine you'd want to meet up with your fella at lunchtime, so you could ski the local area in the morning then maybe take the bus to Auffach or Oberau in afternoon
However, our 8 year old son wants to snowboard rather than ski.
Should you be able to ski before you can snowboard ????????
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
x
There is no requirement to learn to ski before snowboard as the styles are completely different. The only thing to remember is that with skiing there is a release system on the binding, on snowboards, however your feet are fixed, this means that if your son falls badly on ski's they will come off, on snowboards his feet will remain fixed to the board.
I know nothing about snowboarding...but I have found THIS WEBSITE which seems to have some good advice
Pippy
