Diving is excellent - only downside is not alot of colourful fish, but visibilty excellent, great caves. Best time ? I'm not an expert, but prob Autumn - water warm !
Hey gozomark,
oops, forgot the link !!
Can you give me a wee bit of info?
We (murdo & I) have just returned from Sharm el Sheikh and would have loved to go back for diving, but given the circumstances we are not too confident about returning.
Malta seems to offer good diving, so, the questions...... can we travel direct to gozo from the uk, or do we transfer fron Malta? and would you recomend pre booking a dive package with a centre or wait till on the island?
Thanks in advance MrsMac
1. helicopter to Gozo (15mins) - £80 return pp
2. taxi (£15 each way for a car) then ferry £3 return pp
3. hire a car at the airport, then ferry as above
if you are coming peak season, I would pre-book definitely, other times better to, but not essential. There are dive centres all over the island (at a guess around 20), so pick where you want to stay, then choose a convenient dive centre. Guessing your next question being which is the best place to stay, what do you want apart from diving - hotel or apartment, luxury or basic, noisy or quiet etc etc.
A good middle ground is stay in Xlendi http://www.gozo.gov.mt/pages.aspx?page=32
at St Patricks Hotel http://www.vjborg.com/stpatricks/index.shtml
I know the manager and the hotel, dive with St Andrews, 1 minute from the hotel http://www.gozodive.com/098.htm
my future brother in law did his open water there earlier this year
let me know if this is close to what you would like
thanks for the info, the place looks fab, Murdo
Thanks for those links. Am also just back from Sharm. Husband did his open water and daughter did seal course. Went on 1 dive trip (stayed on boat !) and met people who did their training in Gozo. Said it was brill. I'm going to do basics here and hopefully open water in Gozo as they said it was so good.
I finished my open water course in Gozo in June. It can be good to get the theory work and confined dives completed at home and then have more time spent actually diving whilst on holiday. Used MobyDives in Xlendi, they were very good and would use them again. I also here good reports about other Dive Centres. The diving was from the shore which is good for begginers I think and the water lovely and warm compared to Ireland.
