Hi Vonne
My parents took immodium with them and used it when they got a bit looser than normal (if you know what i mean). I took Buscopan and Rehydration Sachets with me. We just had a change in our habits, but not more frequently than usual, no tummy pain and no sickness.
My question is this: On the packet it clearly states "Only take Buscopan IBS Relief if your doctor has diagnosed that you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome" Have I purchased the wrong stuff or as anyone got any advice on this one?
By the way Vonne
I would never take Immodium as a treatment whilst in Egypt, only as a last resort if you were heading back home on the plane, better out than in, so to speak.

Regarding buscopan being just for IBS - my daughter was prescribed it by our GP for severe stomach pain recently but she does not have IBS. It relieved the cramping pain. Expect manufacturers added the comment about doctor prescribed IBS to discourage misuse of the product and cover themselves!
What would you take for a two year old who may get some sort of stomach upset? Thanks.
I think that the best advice anyone could give you is to ensure that if your small child becomes ill with anything that results in more than a loose motion. You should keep them well hydrated and seek medical treatment without delay. Small children can quickly become dehydrated if they suffer severe tummy upsets.

I suffer from IBS and often take gripe water its very good for stoping griping pains
Seriously though, there is a school of thought which suggests that handling money is one of the ways that you pick up tummy bugs.
A suggested defence against this is to carry a small bottle of antibacterial handwash around with you and use it after handling money. There are several brands of this available, Boots stock some, as do http://www.ifsogo.com/acatalog/toiletries.html
The neat things about these products is that you don't need soap or water and therefore just need to have the (small) bottle in your bag.
Going to Sharm..... This Sunday
We've been told, by a guy who has been to Sharm 19 times , diving, and he is an instrucor, so one would think he would know !!
He said that you can buy a tablet from the pharmacy there ,you can't get them here apparently
.
That you take 1 a day every day
and they keep you from getting an upset stomach.
has anyone used these or heard or know about them.
thanks for help
I have bought pepto bismol today for our holiday to Sharm in a fortnight. On getting home and reading the label, it is not suitable for children under 16.
Please can anyone advise me on what to buy?
With thanks
dm
My daughter has used Pepto bismol since aged 10. I would wholeheartedly recommend this stuff.
Just returned from Sharm and can now answer my own question (see above posting).
We bought a drug called DROTAZIDE, it is an anti-septic and
anti-spasmodic capsule,it is not actually listed in the British National Formulary
(BNF, all you fellow nurses know what I mean!) that's the list of drugs licensed in this country.
I have seen this drug before whilst working as a nurse in the middle east so felt comfortable taking it.
It is advised in the leaflet to be taken 4 times a day , however, all four of us took 1 a day, we ate lots of salad (washed in the local water) and took ice in all of our drinks and not one of us experienced any "tummy upsets"
It may of course be coincidence, you cannot, afterall, prove if that is what kept us clear of problems, but I would recommend it as a prophylactic drug to take, and is available in most pharmacies in Sharm.
Hope this helps and would be very interested in any feedback, positive or negative, from those who take this advice.
That's the one! Someone asked me what tablets I bought when we had upset tums out there, I could picture the box but couldn't for the life of me remember the name!
I just need to clarify , as "prophylactic" is a bit of a medical term.
Take your daily capsule as soon as possible when you get there, that is before you get any "tummy problems" , to possibly help stop them starting.
also nice to know they help after you get problems, Thanks Pippy.
Gorjulin -Can you buy these tablets in UK?
No you can't get them here, but available in both pharmacies we went to in Sharm, and cheap to buy.
Pleased to report that the four of us were absolutely fine - no dodgy tums at all.
I can truthly say that all the food, that I ate was of an excellent standard. I did eat in the Hotel, plus local restaurants and did try a lot of new food, and was absolutely fine.
My husband did have 1 day when he felt a bit poorly, but this was due to heat and NOT food. I personally feel that people are quick to blame the food or dirty money, but do not look at the possibility of Heat Exhaustion.
The temparature in the day was 40 -45 degree's and we were walking around the tourist sites, my husband had a hat on which he now feels made him worse, and that is why my husband had an upset stomach. As soon as we returned to the Hotel, he had a tepid shower, lots of water and sleep and was fine the next day.
Yes you do have to be sensible with food, but also think about the heat as well.
If you do decide to go, have an excellent holiday and enjoy.
Quite right Peggy , nausea, diorrhoea and vomiting can all be symptoms of heat exhaustion and more often sunstroke.
First holiday I've had where I never had a dodgy tummy. Followed all the advice, my wife had a dodgy tummy and when we thought back it may have been due to her buying a paper with the dirty money and then not washing before a meal.
