Hello there again.
It wasnt just a case of taking hubbies surname as Id only want to change it once I can actually see that we are legally married. My problem is with no proof of marraige (apart from the booking through frist choice) how long is a reasonable amount of time to give the tour operator to produce us with a certificate. Surely if I dont have it after a year or so then there is a major problem. However when I have spoken to the tour operator over the phone I am just brushed off with "we dont have it". The hotel arent answering emails so what hope do I have of getting this sorted.
Like as said, we paid a lot of money, spent months preparing as many couples do where ever they wed and for what?? A few photo's and a ring. No paper work..nothing to say we are legally married.
First choice didnt even inform the hotel of our arrival date and when we got there we were told after asking a date that we had no wedding booked there. After about 24hrs this was sorted out by the hotel but this isnt the point. Talk about add to the stress!!
Was it worth getting married abroard? Yes, but if a country is so backward with providing paperwork then the tour companies should either inform peolpe of this or choose destinations that are straight froward.
Thanks
Perhaps the next step is writing to the national newspapers. I sure that the major newspapers will be happy to take this up. They do features on these places and have a lot more clout than we do. The TOs will make more of an effort if they are in danger of getting a bad press.
Hi Fwh. Yes i had thought of that. I think I'll give them up to 6 months which I think is more then enough time and then I'll take it further. Thanks for the advice.
We got married in the Gambia. no problem with the Gambian certificate, we got it on the day.
However when i got back i went to our local registry office and asked if needed a UK one too. "No" was the reply, "we don't give out UK ones to people getting married abroad anymore".
I then asked if I could have one anyway and they replied "no because you didn't get married in this country and your not registered here as being married but your Gambian certificate is legal here".
So I then said what happens if i loose my Gambian one? I'd have no way of proving I'm actually married! The registry's reply was for me to go back to Gambia and obtain a copy!
So keep your foreign marriage cert safe as if you loose it you have no proof of being married. And just try to get your tour Op to sort that one out for you!
In was told exactly the same when I married in Barbados. However, I would have thought it would be a lot easier to get a copy from there.
I dont think the TO know what day it is let alone anything as important as that. Lol!! I know that we have to get it translated into english if we ever do get it though.
We got married in Cuba in January and 8 months on still no certificate. I've really had all I can take from firstchoice fobbing me off with 'we've emailed the resort but they haven't go any news', 'there's only 1 judge in cuba who can legalise the certificates so there's a bit of a queue' and 'we've got a new manager who's looking into it'...they've been saying that since i started hassling them 5 months ago!!
We got married in June 06 in Cuba, we were given a certificate while we were there and advised we would receive another. This arrived approx a month after we returned. We also travelled with First Choice which I have posted another topic about as they are useless. Where did you get married? Did they have a wedding co-ordinator in resort.
From what I have read on this subject, without the documents then you cannot prove you are married.
You contracted with First Choice to arrange the wedding and ensure that all documentation was completed correcly. My opinion is that they are in breach of contract.
If you booked a holiday and it was not as described in the brochure then you would quickly put in a claim for compensation. I do not see this as being any different.

Start to monitor all your consequential losses as a result of not being legally married. If these can be identified and justified (you have a legal responsibility to restrict or mitigate your costs and expenses) hit FC with them. That should focus their endeavours somewhat.
Just to say, Sara and I got married in Cuba nearly 2 years ago...it took almost 6 months for our certificate to come through...

The time taken for the documentation to be supplied from Cuba is not the problem. Well yes it is but that is another topic.
The problem that arises is if the paperwork does not arrive. In this case FC have been contracted to arrange things and they have a duty of care.
How long do you wait? Is the documentation with FC? Have they failed to send it or has it got lost?
It is a legal document. If it is lost how do you replace? If it is wrong how do you get it corrected? Can you simply write a letter or do you have to attend in person?
Our marriage certificate was wrong. Because of this we were technically not married and were required to get the original witnesses back to sign a new register entry.
They were both out of the country, that created problems as the person who married us was retiring - the mistake was found when his entries were being audited. The amendment had to be done before he retired.
The registrar had to get special permission to endorse our certificate with the correct details. That was in this country and was complicated. How do you go on when you have got married in another country.
FC have been paid. They have still to complete the job they were paid to do.
