I agree with you mum + brigson. Everyday was a scorcher but we did look forward to the lovely breeze that seemed to appear late afternoon - it was great and cooled things down for a bit.

Hi, we're going to Protaras next May. After a few things I've read I'm getting a bit worried that it's very commercialised eg McDonalds, bowling alleys etc. Is there anything of 'authentic' Cyprus left in Protaras and can anyone recommend good traditional Cypriot restaurants there?
Thanks

Hi retsina :D Protara is a lovely resort, but when we returned last year, we did notice a lot of developments taking place, villas been built etc. Just hope they dont overdo it, and spoil it  Pernera is a resort near to Protaras........not as busy, but definately worth going. Plenty of bars, restaurants, shops etc. :) When we stayed in Protaras last year, we went to a restaurant called "Kaouillas Tavern Restaurant". Its located on the top road, near Fig Tree Bay, right next to the Andreotis apts (where we are stopping in July next year for 2weeks, by the way! :yipee ).We had a great night, Cypriot dancing, good food and drink etc. My kids loved it when a man danced with loads of glasses perched on his head!! :omg  Pernera has a lot of good restaurants, as does Protaras. xx

Thanks Cromwell, the restaurant you mention sounds good. We are staying at Alva Apartments and they have good reports on here so I'm sure everything will be OK.

You are right, the Alva apts are spot on for everything! Worked out a bit pricey for 4of us for next year though in July, thats why we booked Andreotis. Plus, we also have a 2bed apartment, so my kids will have air conditioning aswell  :wave

Hi Dave

We went to Protaras in July this year for 2 weeks and stayed at the Sunrise Beach, was wonderful.

If you've got any questions, I'd be happy to try and answer 8)

Hi all

I was after a little updated information from anyone who's actually been to Protaras in early March.

I realise that there will be only a few places open (it's not a holiday as such, so not overly worried about that) but I was wondering if someone knew which bars/restaurants would actually be open at that time.

Cheers

I stayed in Protaras 3 yrs ago in February and nothing was open , the road in the centre was shut as they were doing all the roadworks , and the only bars taht were open were The Rising Sun and the Greenhouse and one on the top main road , as for Napa absolutely dead and not many people around at all , and to cap it all it was Freezing and snowed when i was there :( :( :( :( i do know a lot of people complained to Mytravel on their return as they couldnt believ ethey would hav eput them somewhere so dead and obviously shutdown for the winter , i worked for MYT at the time and it cost me next to nothing so i couldnt really complain but i could understand their reasons, dont think the weather helped either as for restaraunts the one at the rising sun was open Yianni Maria i think it was called and blue spice was open didnt see a lot more even Mcds was shut

I went out 20th March this year and it was pretty quiet, although quite a few of the bars & restaurants were open. Only 2 or 3 of the bars had any life (The Greenery, Flora and Malmia Pub because they have live football on).

Most restaurants had opened, but were pretty empty!!!

There are quite a few restaurants/eateries that open, but they are few and far between and you need to drive around to find them.
Another point to note is that some of them only open at lunch times in the winter.
If you have a car it is worth driving around the villages that sit back off the coast as there will always be a Taverna open and you will get a cheaper meal.

Thanks all.

If I had a choice it wouldn't be March but as I said in my post, it's not a holiday, and has to be around that time.

As long as I find somewhere nice that's open and I can get a drink and a nice meal, I'll be happy! :D

Hi Kezza
We have been twice in March and 3 weeks last Xmas, we managed to find enough places open to keep us going. in Kapparris there was Kara's, the Ozone, the Corner pin. the Wooden Crest, Faliros. Daisy's English resturant is now opening all year round. On the hill at orphainides the Glenshar and the other places were open. Summer lovers on the Golden coast road

Pernera the Niata Bar and the Blue Spice and Davidos., Protaras the Greenery. Malama and Woody's plus one at the far end cant remember the name.

From what i hear more places will open this year. Ayia napa although not heaving was pretty busy with plenty open around the harbour and a few along Nissi Avenue.

Then you have Paralimni and Deryhnia and the surrounding villages like i said we never got bored and found it a perfect time to explore , cold at night but can be hot enough to burn you through the day,
