Do not use Dilos!!

My story is depressingly similar to other stories told on this forum. Last week, I booked a holiday at Skopelos Village in Skopelos, Greece, via Dilos. The total price was EUR 1050, and I shortly afterwards received a mail from Dilos in which I was asked to pay a deposit of EUR 400. I followed the instructions and authorised a payment from my account of EUR 400. However, the next day I saw that Dilos had deducted the whole sum of EUR 1050 from my account. I found the mail address to the hotel (which I should have used in the first place, of course), and they tell me that they have not received any booking from Dilos. I have sent a mail to Dilos asking them to come up with a convincing explanation. They have not answered. This makes me very suspicious.

Right now, I realise that my deposit of EUR 400 may be lost. But what about the remaining EUR 650? I did not authorise this, so in my view my bank and/or credit card company (VISA) must answer for this sum, if not for the whole sum of EUR 1050.

Any advice would be welcome. And many thanks for running this website and sharing your knowledge - after having read some of the postings, I realise that I should not spend too much time trying to phone or mail Dilos.

Hi Everyone..

Well we're still getting complaints for Dilos and i know from surfing the Net this has been ongoing for several years now and the company is still up to no good.

Recently i searched out loads of forums and guestbooks and put a link to this thread with a brief account of the Dilos behaviour. At last if searching Dilos by some of the above names Holidaytruths now comes up fairly close to the top with this thread giving a small ammount of web presence.

Dilos know how the search engines operate and counter complaint forums like this by having a huge web presence which will come up before any complaint forum on a search and it was somewhere near to 10 pages on google. If you pass a guestbook or use a holiday destination forum then pop a quick reference in to this thread as it does work and will keep this thread at the top.

oehaugen have you tried contacting your credit card supplier as they may be able to assist you in reclaiming your money?

I accidentally came across this forum and thread by typing "Dilos Holiday World problems" in Google - and Holiday-truth.com came at the top. Well, if I had only done that before I booked my holiday...

Has anyone tried to alert the credit card companies? According to the web site for VISA (in Norway), customers are asked to contact their local bank and specifically not VISA.

I have given Dilos one day to reimburse me (if pigs can fly...), but if they do not, I will contact my bank. I will also bring an edited print-out of postings on this forum to show that I am certainly not alone. Will report back!

Just a thought for anyone affected by Dilos.

My personal interest in this thread is from seeing so many complaints about the company and a friend had a holiday ruined by Dilos. It's not just the money but, when you get to your destination and they tell you Dilos dont have any reservations at the Hotel your stuck thousands of miles from home and in a pannick with what to do next.

Maybe time to contact BBC Watchdog as they often get good results.

It may be of some interest to see how Dilos works. When I realised that they might have "forgotten" to contact the hotel (only taking my money, and very quickly) I mailed the hotel, and they informed me that they had not heard anything from Dilos. So I have asked Dilos for a convincing explanation. They finally replied:

"Thank you for your note however we just contacted the hotel and we spoke to the person in charge who assured us that our confirmation is already received and he will be able to fax it back by the end of this week as he is in Thessaloniki for the moment for a business trip, but he never heard of you or any phone call and certainly he never said anything like the words you mention below, therefore please clarify now if you wish this reservation to be canceled and we will do so. The person we spoke to is already 25 years in the same hotel and he knows Dilos very well."

My comments:

1. No explanation for why Dilos debited my account for the whole amount and not only for the deposit.
2. The hotel informs me in writing that they have not heard anything from Dilos.
3. Faxing back a confirmation after a week? When people at the hotel actually could answer a mail from me the next day?

If I ever saw an evasion technique, this is it. Well, I have asked for a full reimbursement, which they kindly offer me. Maybe they just have to wait till the manager gets back from a week in Timbuktu, and then their fax machine breaks down, then there is this computer virus, etc.

To be continued, I fear.

Depressingly familiar themes posted with regard to Dilos Holiday World. I booked a holiday with them last October to again find both that the entire amount had been debited from my credit card rather than the deposit amount agreed with them and they could provide no confirmatiion of any booking with the hotel concerned.
My advice, if faced with this situation, is to ask for an immediate refund and ask them to send confirmation to you by e-mail or fax; their confirmation needs to acknowledge that they agree to refund the whole amount (specify the exact amount e.g £450) to yourself and to a specified account (e.g if you have paid by VISA to specific account number; the Visa number does not have to be given in full, e.g 1234 **** **** 5678). When your credit card company has this information they will be able to instruct Dilos that they have 30 days in which to pay the refund; if no refund is received after this time the money will be credited back to you from your card issuer. This was the only way I was able to recover approx £1000 from Dilos. Dilos will always tell you that a refund is just about to be paid to you; DON'T believe them.
Unfortunately the consumer credit act of 1971 does not protect you for purchases made outside the UK. In addition, when I spoke to my credit card company, Dilos can debit the entire amount from your account without any comeback as paying by credit card is a guaranteed method of payment for that amount ( and not just the deposit).
It is regrettable that such a company is still trading, continues to take people's money for services that do not materialise and operates such an unacceptable practice with regard to paying (or not paying as the case may be) refunds. Surely EU law needs to be tightened/reviewed to tackle this situation.

Sorry last post should say Consumer Credit Act 1974

Well contacted the hotel they have no reservation in the name of myself and others in my party. Contacted Dilos who say the rooms are reserved via another agent they use and the names of the clients are provided to the hotel 2 days before arrival.

Only thing I can do is contact the hotel on Monday as we arrive at the hotel on wednesday night, well at 1am in the morning don't want to be looking for somewhere to sleep that time of night!!!

I have emailed the hotel giving them Dilos explanation and await a reply

A bit worried now :( :?

We posted together Supermum above

I've had a thought also - Wondered if it would help if Dilos gave you the contact details for this other agent that they are using?

Fastedy, only just looked at this post and seen your comment above from March 11th. It's my understanding that the consumer credit act now extends to overseas purchases providing the credit card you use is a British registered card. A recent court case clarified that point. Not sure when the case was heard or if it provides retrospective cover prior to the hearing date.

If anyone is "bounced" by their credit card company on this aspect do check with a legal expert.

Appreciate if anyone on this site can confirm my belief about overseas card use.

Just anupdate :

Dilos telephoned today to say that they had contacted the hotel, there is a booking, they are forwarding our names and we may contact the hotel to confirm the booking tomorrow to allow for them to have the info on their computer.

Given all the communication problems on the other posts I was very surprised that they made contact.

Have to believe them and travel next week before we can do anything else I guess
