Following on from the above.

A good way to beat the pickpocket is to have a chain on your wallet/purse.
I cannot take credit for this idea an old Spanish man showed me his years ago.
I had my husbands wallets converted and then my purse and the cost is a few pounds.
You do feel more secure and you will never lose your wallet/purse on the floor.
You will need to go to the local hardware/cobblers and have a riveted hole put through the leather. then you need to buy 2 split rings
1 bulldog clip and a piece of chain, enough to be able to use your wallet/purse without having to unclip it (approx 10/12 inches long)
Try and buy a piece of chain where the links have been individually soldered.

Looking at the picture below you will see how it is made up in minutes, and the clip can be fastened to your trouser belt loops, or any method like having a safety nappy pin on the inside of the waistband (when there are no loops) and then clip the bulldog clip onto the pin.
Usually mens shorts that dont have belt loops have a cord pull to tighten the waistb and tie these together in a knot or double bow and then clip onto this or just attach a safety pin as above.

Keep the wallet/purse in the FRONT pocket you will never loose it on the floor and you will know if anyone tries to take it.

Ladies do the same with your purse, it does become difficult if you have no pockets in your trousers and therefore if you need to keep your purse in your handbag.
You will normally have an inner zip pocket inside the bag, put a safety pin or a split ring through the hole (if there is one) on the end of the zip tab, then attach the bull clip to anything that you can use to secure your purse to the bag, you won't lose your purse by having it picked in places like markets, just don't lose your handbag.!

I cannot stress enough how much this will give you peace of mind knowing that unless your wallet/purse is physically taken from you....
Your wallet/purse will be safer.

I`ve left the chain out to show you, but it can all be tucked away inside the pocket.

You will be walking along when a young man will stop in front of you and pick a coin up off the ground. He will ask you what it is - more often than not it is a euro - and if you can change it for the local currency!

What you may not notice is that he has an accomplice who watches to see where you keep your money ready for a spot of purse or wallet lifting later when you are off guard.

This was tried on us in Tunisia but as we were aware of it, we just said 'we don't use euros' and carried on walking!

Be very careful at ATM machines. Whilst making your withdrawal someone will point to a £5 for eg note on the floor to say you dropped it. As you bend to retrieve the note an accomplice takes your money from the machine.

This s c a m is doing the rounds here at the moment & it was from an ATM within our local bank. :(

Is anyone else annoyed about the increasing trend of hotels in Europe charging for room safes – and those charges are rocketing upwards? It really is a bit of racket in my opinion.

Charges usually are now typically 3 euros per day – and this is probably equal to the actual purchase cost of a typical safe for just a two week rental!! ( Check out Homebase, Argos or the like for prices!)
When safes were introduced many years ago – the charges were introduced with a justification that there was an associated insurance cover provided – and the little form you signed when renting the safe made this clear. These days there’s no insurance – it’s just a money making game for the hotel.

Unfortunately a steel safe is way too heavy to take on holiday – so bringing one from home isn’t possible. I have an Argos travel safe – but these are only plastic and do need one to find something fixed in a hotel room to chain it to.

If you don’t rent the room safe you will often find that the hotel will take absolutely no responsibility for the security of anything you leave in your room – small print on checkin forms or on info they place in your room will say that. And yet you will see maids leaving doors open unattended, or sometimes forgetting to close and lock patio doors.

And if you do decide to take the risk you might well find that your friendly travel insurance firm will refuse to pay out on claims for theft if a safe was in the room and you didn’t pay to use it.

Europe is far worse for this than the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Far East, or even places like Turkey or Egypt – in those holiday destinations one often finds the safe provided free of charge.
