I think Albufeira is about 40 kilometres from Faro airport. The journey takes about 30-35 minutes. You can find quite a good map to give you an idea of where the various resorts are at http://www.thevillaagency.co.uk/map.php. There are lots of smaller resorts right along the coast, particularly around Albufeira and between there and Lagos. It all depends what you want really. The beaches are fantastic anywhere!

If you know nothing about the Algarve it would be a good idea to go in to a travel agent and pick up lots of brochures, from which you'll be able to get an idea of where you might like to stay. But bear in mind it's nearly always cheaper to DIY it.

If you have any particular likes and dislikes post again and we'll all pile in with our recommendations!!

Oh whoops! Sorry to those who love the Eastern Algarve. Just realised the map I've suggested doesn't go any further east than the Faro peninsula.

Lizzie - the Algarve goes east from Faro right to the Spanish border and I'm sure someone else will give you a bit of detail about this stretch of the coast.

I have actually booked to S. Joao since I posted as we wanted to go the first week in May and there was not that much available, I will put another thread or read through other posts to find out about where we're going, I had to decide quick so hope I've chosen somewhere ok.

If you look at http://www.albufeira.com/map/city/default.asp and you know the address of the place you've booked, you can click on the street name in the box underneath the map and a pointer will appear on the map. You should be able to get a good idea of where you are staying in relation to the rest of Albufeira. Sao Joao is an area near The Strip in the newer part of the town, and the Old Town is a little further west and well worth a visit or two.

In the details it said the apts were close to S Joao and Montechoro and about 1.7 km from Alburfeira but will look at the map tomorrow.
