Hi, i am just about to book a diy to gran canaria for august. i have found the flights, accomodation and have looked up the cost of transfers in a taxi. Have I though of everything though!! ?Any good advice from experienced DIY er's would be great. One main concern is we do not land until after 9pm so am guessing would not be at our apartments till well after 10pm - do you think we would be able to check in ok? We are travelling with two young children so dont want to be stranded! Thanks
PS the apartments are Cala d'or in puerto rico.
If you are arranging return transfers, make sure you get a telephone contact number for the taxi firm so you can call them the day before you are leaving your resort and make sure they've remembered you.
Have you arranged accommodation direct or with an agency? If direct, e-mail the hotel/apartments and tell them when you'll be arriving. If you've used an agency, ask them to contact the hotel for you and to confirm that they have done so. Print off their reply just in case of problems later.
Print out the address of your hotel/ rooms just in case there's a language problem with the taxi driver.
It's a bit nerve-racking the first time but you'll probably find that things run as smoothly if not smoother than with a tour operator.Good luck and instead of worrying, think of the money you've saved !
thanks for your reply - I have sorted the travel insurance. we are booking the accomodation with thomson, so I'll contact them regards booking in. If anyone else as any info on puerto rico - I would be grateful
Just a thought;have you considered pre-booking a taxi transfer? This shouldn't cost any more than picking one up at the airport and at least, with pre-booking, you know that there'll be one there waiting for you.
Even if yours is the only flight arriving at that time(which I doubt)there will be another 250 people on the flight, a fair proportion of whom will probably be looking for a taxi and, with kiddies, you really don't want to be standing in a queue at the taxi stand after a 4+ hour flight do you?
Thanks sagres for that piece of advice - I think I will try and pre book, will save waiting around! I have looked on the canry forum website and saw an ad on their so might try them. thanks again.
My pleasure; just found the following link on the G.C. forum.

Not recommending it as I haven't used them, just pointing you in the right direction !!
We arrived in Gran Canaria early hours after a night flight and once we got outside my wife stopped to smoke a cigarette. She had only just lit up after a 5hour flight and we were asked if we needed a taxi so you wont be stranded. Cost us 35 euros for four of us. Nice taxi`s and friendly drivers. Have a nice time...... regards...mike..
If I were you, I'd still pre-book a taxi; it doesn't cost any more and, for the sake of the little ones,it's best to be safe than sorry.Just because there were taxis there for someone else, doesn't mean to say there will be one there for you.
