Hi Glynis and welcome back.
Glad you enjoyed yourself, and, by the sound of things, you've seen as much of the Algarve as those of us who've been going there for years !
Hope that you've broken your weather jinx - I've been checking the webcams and it looked as if you had plenty of sunshine.
It's going to be a struggle to come up with suggestions for new places to visit in September but we've got eight weeks to work on it !!

Welcome back, Glynis.
You certainly did see a lot on your visit and I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Have you fallen under the spell of the Algarve yet?
Glad you managed to see Tavira and Cabanas.
What will this forum do in September without you, Sagres and me all in the Algarve at that time?????
:rofl :glynis :rofl

Thanks Geoff  When we go back it's only for the week and we have Algarve newbies with us (we are now locals   ) ie my parents (in their 70's and mam with a dodgey knee) and our son of 22 so we'll be a mixed bag.

We'll go back to a couple of the nice places we've seen ie the drive to Odelouca we found out we can come back through Caldas de Monchique and Carrapateira Western coast run so that will combine 2. The Odelouca drive up is through the countryside then back down via the coast. We'd go back to Alte and Oxeceixe Village as well.

Got to be careful with mams walking problems of course.

We didn't do Faro old town which someone said is worth a visit and another person at the airport said they'd stayed in Vilamoura which was nice so we could pop in there if it's worth it?

Vilamoura has a lovely marina but I don't particularly like this resort as it is purpose built really for the tourist (I think) so not so much typically Portuguese.
Faro old town is worth a visit with it's marina and winding streets.
If you head back towards the East side, do visit Castro Marim as the drive up there has breathtaking scenery and views and is a nature reserve area.
You can also visit Monte Gordo and Vila Real(last town before Spain) whilst in the area.
Well, that's a start for you to think about.

Vilamoura is a purpose built resort around a lovely marina. Yes, I agree it is not the 'true Algarve' but it is still nice all the same. It has a really long sandy beach with good facilities.

Vilamoura is great for those with walking difficulties as it is flat all round the marina and also great for those with an interest in expensive boats.

Glynis, did you book your apartment through an agency or direct with the owner - wouldn't mind having the details if possible please. Recommendation is always a good option.

Oops Sorry Pat and Sarah didn't see your replies. Thanks Pat for those recommendations. Will discuss with hubby see if it's feasible to drive that far with the gang in tow

Pippa the apartment is HERE

In the photo they have the settee and chair near the TV pushed forward and it makes the room look smaller than it actually is.

Here's the view taken on Saturday from our balcony

Apartment looks lovely.
Also forgot to mention that Monte Gordo promenade is so flat and lots of people go there if they have walking difficulties as it's ideal for wheelchairs, scooters etc.
No doubt "others" will come up with more suggestions!!!

Glynis,
Remember what I told you when I recommended Lagos when you asked for suggestions - you must take up references before you tell people about it !!! :rofl Otherwise the time is going to come when I'll try to book and the town will be full !!

Sagres,
You'd better believe it......I ranted about Cabanas to lots of friends and now I have to phone and book them into one of the apartments ( he only has 4) with the result that one time when we went there, despite giving our dates, the apartments were full!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now his mother has let us stay in the house that is behind and above her house which lies empty as she doesn't really let it out in case of noise etc but she says she never hears us at all, so she doesn't mind AND she charges us washers to stay there ( when we eventually get her to tell us how much it is.........usually the day before we are due to fly home)
Means we get more money to spend on sagres and tinto.............
:rofl :glynis :rofl

Hi Glynis,

It was great to read everything you did - you certainly covered some ground! Glad to hear you have a good time!

We must go up to Monchique. Your drive from Odelouca to Alferce sounds brill. We've only been to the west coast once, and that was last January. The weather was bad but we said we must go back in the sunshine to see the lovely beaches again.

Can't find Oxeceice on the map. Well, I can't see anything on the map cos my glasses are still upstairs and it's very early!!! But Oxeceice isn't on the Albufeira.com map! Burgau is another place on our list of "to-do's".

I think the traffic lights which seem to have no purpose but always seem to be on red when you approach them mean that you were speeding a little way back up the road and need to be taught a lesson! Don't know whether the locals "jump" them - we were the only ones we ever saw caught!

I think your post has shown single-handedly that the Algarve is truly a destination which has something for everyone. The best beaches and great local beers and wines for those who just want to relax, but if you want to explore there is so much out there to see and do.

Sorry Rose I made a spelling mistake (now corrected) regarding the village. It's actually Odeceixe.  Look for the restaurant that has the outside ovens where they grill the fish if you fancy the rabbit stew. Hubby had 'pork leg done in the oven' but preferred my stew :D

Regarding Burgau do take your car down to the beach. It seems unlikely that you can drive down there as the street is so narrow but you can park at the bottom. If it's full there then don't worry - as you hit the beach ( literally) you do a left turn and there's a wide causeway that you can part on, or, go up the road over the causeway where you can see a car park at the top there. There's a restaurant on the beach and also a little snack bar over towards the mentioned car park.

The route we took to Caldas De Monchique was from a 'Welcome' pamphlet in our apartment. The route was taken from the 'Algarve on Wheels' pocket guide written by Len Port. According to the bumph there are 15 more routes in the book all through unspoilt countryside, and you can pick one up on the revolving stands throughout the Algarve.

We didn't bother as by the time we decided to have a look at one of them we were due to come home  (typical)

Just a tip for anyone thinking of visiting Burgau and parking next to the beach on that causeway - check the tides before leaving your car there for any length of time as high tides do reach that causeway and the car hire firms don't like having to fish sardines out of the engine compartment !!

Hey Glynnis, you were in Carvoeiro at the same time as us - we got there on the 1st for a 7 day stay - wonder if we passed each other in the street??
There was an odd drain whiff in the square sometimes - apparently they are having major works done but it's taking ages as they don't want to close it off for the tourists. Didn't make you want to eat around there though!

Don't write Carvoeiro off! The works are more or less completed (they have updated the sewerage system). Plus there are some fantastic restaurants at the top of Estrada do Farol (Restaurant Hill) nowhere near the place where the work has been done. Places to look our for are A Rede, A Gale which both do beautiful meals. Next time why not go to Silves which is also an attractive down with a lot of history, a lovely castle (and steep roads).
