I used to love this restaurant a few years ago but having visited again this year just to see if there was any improvement on 2004 & 2005 I can unfortunately say...................NO improvement in quality of the food or the general atmoshphere & service
The place was packed as usual but they've crammed so many tables in you might as well sit with the people surrounding you on one big table because your sooooo close it's uncomfortable. You can even enjoy everyone else's cigarretes throughout your meal
Our food was really poor, not tasty at all, mass produced Cr*p, service was also lacking, too many tables for too few waiting staff ! By serving your food on outrageously huge plates doesn't negate the need for the food to be edible and more importantly a decent portion, our meals were very small.
I realise many, many people rave about the place and fully expect peeps to diagree with me, but to me it's a clear case of the Mermaids name and past reputation lending itself to getting bigger than it's reputation and allowing themselves to dilute the food & service because holidaymakers are going to visit anyway..........it remains to be seen how many people pay more than one visit during their stay
It's a real shame too because in the early days it was a great place, with a good atmosphere and great food at decent prices.
It advertises itself as having the largest menu on the island as it's claim to fame.......my advice would be consolidate the menu to allow them to be good at least SOME of the menu choices, lose some tables and get back to your roots before it's too late
I wouldn't recommend the place at all as it is now and certainly wont be wasting anymore money in there until they get their act together. There are far, far better places to eat in Kalamaki.
We were in Kalamaki in May and thought we would give Mermaids a try because every night it was packed so guessed there was obviously something pulling people in. It turned out to be the worst meal we had during our stay and the food was like the 2 for 1 meals you get in pub chains at home.
By far the best restaurant we tried was Michaelos.
