there are some details missing here to get the full picture, eg
how did you book this-by phone or internet or just turn up
did they want credit/debit card
i just had a quick look at this hotel, and it seems to me to be a country pub with 4 letting rooms in a converted barn, (spiders live in these!)not a hotel, and the charges vary according to which website you access from £65 per room per night which works out at say £30 each which is not exactly the Ritz(not that that excuses the room being unclean), so you should not expect 3* standards.
in my view,if you have given CC details on booking, i would expect them to make a charge for 2 nights against your card as you did not check out in accordance with their conditions(most websites i looked at had these conditions on them), and i would approach your CC company and raise a dispute against this charge, but i would not expect to win, but maybe negotiate a reduced amount.
if no CC was involved you are still due to pay the full amount, but i would suggest that if you offered to pay for 1 night (by cheque so you have a receipt) and sent this money in full and final settlement, they would cash the cheque and you would hear no more about it.
if they have no details,,other than your reg no., they can still trace you, but the fact the landlord threw you out and did not pursue you further for the money, i would think that he has written this off as bad debt and you will probably hear no more about it.
however, you had the chance to check out your rooms on arrival, but rushed out to see friends-which may have been the reason for visit- and so accepted rooms.you had breakfast-did you not talk about rooms/leaving then-and complained about the shower, which they did try to put right straightaway, and only then decided to leave because of the shower! when there were cobwebs and dirt in the sugar bowl earlier at breakfast!!!!!
sorry, it seems to me that you stayed in a pub, met your friends, got up next morning and decided after breakfast that you did not want to stay any longer and are now looking for justification for avoiding your second nights payment.
send the cheque as above!
Jimd-f: a cracking post. Sums up the situation perfectly.
Peter of York - thanks for that link. It may disprove my earlier post wherein I thought you could refrain from paying a restaurant bill providing you give full contact details and providing you have (what you consider) just cause to withold payment.
kmba - well, not a lot to say really - but you are ALSO entitled to your views.

They ONLY details they have of us is our car registration numbers. Just for the record we were not shown any contract, not told of any cancellation policy or fees, didn't sign anything, didn't see any papers at all.
Would appear the hotelier only has the car registration numbers.
I decline to rush to any judgement on this matter, but have pointed out the potential legal pitfalls in my previous posting.

I guess we did take some time coming to our decision to check out of the hotel. It takes a lot to push me into decisions like this. As the time went by I was finding more and more stuff that I could initially live with for just two nights but not being able to shower was the final straw. I know £65-£85 isn't going to get us a fancy hotel, but I also know I've paid half that price and had a clean room with working shower and more.
Someones comments on it being a barn and spiders live in barns. Fair enough comment but when there are dead spiders which look like they've been there for a while it is obvious to me that there has been little or no attempt to prepare this room for guests. Not sure if I mentioned hair in the bath? There was also some hanging from the soap dish on the side of the bath. Luckily I took photos.
Anyway, must dash again. I do really appreciate all the posts and time out you lot have taken. I will be back!
James
The way I look at it you complained about the facilities and gave them a chance to rectify the situation, which they failed to do. You then exercised your right to leave because of their failure to provide service. Where's the problem? The checkout time doesn't come into it as the basis for leaving is non provision of service. There is nothing owing for the second night.
Then the woman squared up to her to hit her but I got between them. We were promptly kick out of the pub/hotel minus our room keys.
Taking into consideration the intimidating behaviour of the owners wife and the fact that they were thrown out, would they not have been asking for trouble to return to pay?
If you re-enter an establishment you have been thrown out of, would you not be trespassing?
