I have visited a vast amount of holiday destinations and find myself stuck on tenerife... purely for the

great all year weather
extremely friendly bar staff
vast choice of entertainment
loads of daytime expeditions and fun to be had

merseygull I find your comments very unfair I have not come across bars that serve slops and the like beer very rarely warm... you need to get your bee oot your bonnet and start enjoying life.. as for the PRs I think you will find them in most holiday destinations..

Somebody mentioned more exotic places like egypt well I would rather have a tenerife PR hassling me than 10 - 20 kids scrapping at ma heels.

I have cause to think merseygull was having a wind up

this is the first year since 1995 i will not have visited Tenerife. I have been in total 27times and still love it today. Although i have to say many things have changed not always for the better. 2 years ago i managed to prize my hubby away from tenerife to the algarve...albufiera and he instantly fell in love with it. Its a bit like tenerife was back in the early 90s.Its much cheaper than tenerife and to be fair the weather has always been better. Ive spent the last few years in tenerife in october november or december in monsoon weather. I will miss tenerife this year but i guess people move on to there are other things to see and do. I will still return next year

I understand your thoughts izzee17 :) People do move on to other things and places. It seems to have happened the other way round for me :?:
Since I was about 17, I never really went back to the same place much more than about 3 times, always wanted to see somewhere new. Now I'm just happy with Tenerife :) Can't see that changing...but MIGHT go back to Greece or Cyprus at some point next year and have just one holiday to Tenerife..we'll see..watch this space

If i only went on 1 holiday a year, i wouldn't be visiting las americas each holiday. As there is plenty of places that i want to see. but as i'm lucky to have more than 1 holiday my 2nd holiday is always to Tenerife.

This year i have been to las americas for 2 weeks we always do in march.

In 2 weeks i'm of to cyprus

Then in nov i'm going back to las americas to stay at my mums apt for a week.

We did exactly the same as you. We used to holiday in Puerto de la Cruz regularly and often hired a car to take tours of the island. We used to stop off in the South and say 'why do people come to this part of the Island for their holidays when the North is so much nicer' ( in our opinion). Bearing in mind that was over 23 years ago when Las Americas was literally one very small road with a couple of cafe/restaurants and nothing more. About 18 years ago when booking our holiday to Tenerife we could not get anything booked in the North so decided we would try the South, just that once mind. From that day we have always stayed in the South and now only visit the North of the Island when out and about in the car.
The South has changed so much in that time and we would not dream of going anywhere else. Give it another try with the girls, they and you will love it i'm sure. My kids don't ask 'where we are going on holiday', they ask 'when are we going to Tenerife', they are 16, 15 and 20 and they have been going since they were babies. We do try other destinations just for a quick break but our hearts are in Tenerife.

Go on, give it a go

Yes we love Tenerife. With introduction of the Euro, like all other countries, profiteering has had a place to play on prices.
The holidays seem to be cheaper, package that is. Where you get there the bars in PDLA & Los Cristianos have hyped the price. I give you a recent example 2 large largers 2 Vodka & tonics 19.50Euros, mainly English bars charging this. Same drinks in local bar, supplied nuts and nibbles, clean seating 8Euros.
We have voted with our feet, only once bitten, will not return to these rip-off places. Back again for a month iin two weeks and again for three weeks in January 2007, the local bars get the vote. Sorry slightly off the thread but pricing was raised.

I have to admit,I still find the prices for a good night out, in some of the nicest Bars and Restaurants in Tenerife, are cheaper in comparison to nights out in similair quality places in the U.K. :)

I agree, and I would go further and say that we noticed a big difference in eating out in Alcudia/Can Pastilla/Peurto Pollensa etc in Majorca, which we also love.

Restaurants of a similar quality were much cheaper in Tenerife. :D

Good news for us :D , but possibly not so good if you are trying to make a living running a restaurant in PDLA etc. :?

Well theres nothing like sweeping generalisation is there - but i suppose each to their own.

I am on countdown no to go to the Vulcano in 3 weeks and just can't wait, we've certainly never encountered any probs like these but we've probably pitched our choice of bars at night a bit higher!!!

Cant say i found it any cheaper, paid £1600 for two weeks at vulcano, after much searching around.

CHEERS jackie we will give it a try again the reason we go up north is our freinds have a pub up there called the new inn (once of the ye,old tavern) were we have been going for years and was going to go back again this year but daughter did not want to go. so we went to benni and she keeps asking when are we going back to benni so in the mean time it looks like thats were we will be going but tenerife will allways have a special place in my heart :) :)

but will go back yours the fatboy

Not really sure if this has anything to do with the reduced bookings and therefore reduced prices, but... I go to Tenerife every Christmas, and this year I am thinking not. The reason - the no smoking ban. I've tried to find out how it is affecting bars and hotels but not getting too much info. My mother was there last month at the Vulcano and there is no way I could go. There is no smoking anywhere at all in the hotel, including the bedrooms. The only place you could was at the pool. :( She said the bars were mixed, some allowed it some didn't.
Please don't go all PC on me and tell me to stop smoking. I smoke, Fact of life. It would spoil my holiday not being able to have a cigarette with my drink - although I don't mind if they put all us socially unacceptable people together. I live in Scotland and know how hard it is - we have already been hit hard with the ban. Pubs are suffering, so perhaps so is Tenerife. Any thoughts?

my bar is a no smoking bar........... customers however dont mind going out to the terrace to light up.... it has caused me no problems.
im a smoker as well...... and i dont mind going outside every so often for a smoke.... im afraid this is the way it is......

I know that it won't affect a lot of bars and will attract people to bars. I don't mind going to a terrace to have a cig especially in the gorgeous sunny weather. It's the hotel which is the problem. particularly in December when the weather can be a bit dodgy. Last year we were in the Adeje Palace and didn't really go outside the hotel very much - only for a few hours at night. We were there to totally chill out and recharge the batteries. Might go to the Bahia Principe as it has an outside but roofed area which the hotel has confirmed as OK for tobacco lovers. Either that or Egypt.
Bottom line is that it IS stopping me from going and I'm sure I am not the only one.

I am not going to get PC with you as both my husband and I smoke.

If the hotels do not allow smoking why not try booking an apartment. We always go self catering (not that we cook) and have had no problems with not being allowed to smoke.

when last we were in LC, some bars allowed smoking and some didn't. Most didn't mind you going onto the terrace if they had one. The places that serve food were fairly strict ( and rightly so IMHO) but again, they didn't mind you smoking outside.

I gave up the fags in April and it has been a real struggle, the cravings have come back yet again this week and i am in no way ever going to lecture anyone that smokes...

fags and beer go together....

Hi

Val I think if I remember rightly when we were in Tenerife the owners were saying that if the premises is over 1000sq mtrs then smoking would be allowed inside providing they had seperate areas for smokers and non smokers. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. The only problems I can see with the smoking ban is when on the rare occassion the weather is not so good and you have to sit inside to eat. Who wants to sit inside a restaurant and eat when the weather is glorious?
