Hi,

Can anybody give me information of how to get to Alexandria from the port - is it within walking distance or will it be necessary to take an organized tour?

Thanks Margarita

my understanding was that you had to get an organised tour in egypt unless you had a visa... i believe the same applies to libya...

are you going on the ancient wonders cruise like us?

shyskins. have they changed any of your ports of call do you know... are you still going to beirut???
Reply
no we arent going to beirut we go to limassol instead, its good cos cyprus is lovely but a shame as i understand that beirut is actually a brilliant place to go

i think turkey will depend on whether there are problems there at the time,, my understanding is that we will divert to another greek island if there is more trouble in turkey

yaaay 2 weeks today

I was on board a few weeks ago on the Adriatic Explorer. For the Pearls of the Aegean cruises they were going to Mykonos instead of Turkey.

i wonder if they still are, when i enquired last week they said they were sending people to turkey still but it would rather depend if there were any more bombings... mykonos wouldnt be bad though

i really dont mind as long as i get to see egypt and malta i will be happy ... the other places are bonus' for me

yes they only changed the once from marmaris to mykinos that was the day after the bombs went off, they docked in marmaris on tuesday this week, but they will obviously change again if need be, fingers crossed for you they wont have to.

just heard from thomson about a further change to our itinerary.. apparently there are local elections in greece the day we were due to go to crete and much of it will be closed or inaccessable

we are therefore going to santorini that day instead.. i am very pleased with this change as having been there before i know how beautiful santorini is and am eager to show hubby.. it will be nice to see if its changed much in the 20 odd years since i was living (camping out??!!)there for a couple of months

Shykins beware of the cafes in Santorini, we were on the Pearls of the Aegean cruise in August and when we docked there we heard lots of complaints that the cafes charged a different price if they knew you were off the ships. (10 euros a drink as opposed to 3 euros) If they asked we were told to say we were staying at the hotel up the road and we did only pay 3 euros for a drink !

thanks lou i will bear that in mind.

it obviously has changed since i was there as there wasnt such a thing as hotels or cafes lol....consumerism comes to us all i suppose!!!

shyskins... santorini is also a tender boat just about 5 mins and you are at the bottom of the cable car then ... or if you prefer about 700 steps... or worse still ... the donkeys to take you up....whichever you choose it wiill be worth it its beautiful
Reply
thanks laine i thought it would be a tender...no way i will be walking as i have a back problem.. cable car for me, the thought of those donkeys going up that cliff with me on their back does not appeal lol

i spent about 5 weeks there in my younger days so am very keen to see it again.. as you say its very beautiful and everything you expect a greek island to be

did you try the spa on the emerald??... wondered what sort of things they offer and what sort of prices

its our anniversary while we are away so thought i might treat myself lol
