Perhaps the authorities have twigged that one element in the decline in the islands tourism can be attributed to peoples experiences of being hassled by touts and deciding not to return (I have a couple of friends who swore not to return after all the aggrovation they had a few years ago)
..You have to bear in mind though its a double edged sword because if the touts do manage to persuade you to attend a presentation and you "invest" (ha, ha, ha, ha falls on the floor) in a time share/holiday club it means building jobs created for canarians..maybe thats why up till now the authorities didn't do much to stop the touts
My experience of Timeshare has been nothing but good. We owned for 10 years at The Regency Club and 6 years ago resold to them and bought at their new resort of The Regency Country Club. When we first bought it was pressure free because we are not the sort of people who jump into anything with both feet, we requested time to do our own research before buying and they had no problems with that. The whole thing was done at our pace and not theirs and we have never had one problem in all the years we have owned timeshare. As I mentioned in a previous post everything is done in house, you are not dragged off the streets by touts. The fact that some resorts have to do this would put me off them straight away. As Hotel stayer says it is a double edged sword. Touts would not be a problem and I am sure no one would mind them being there IF they just accepted a no thanks from people that aren't interested instead of hassling them and throwing insults at them when they are told no.
but what can i say, timeshare touts will never shake off the reputation they have, because we work on the street, and we are persistent / annoying, but thats life. Its not going to go away.
Only 24 years old and what a pessimistic view on life.
With a view like yours, then you should go far in life tramping over everyone who gets in your way.
Whilst there is some truth in some points of your posts, those grievances should be directed towards the Government and the corporate businesses that run this world, both who exploit the third world countries but hey, if everyone in the world stopped buying Nike shoes tomorrow, do you really think that these people being paid cents to stitch footballs/trainers would then have a better life.?
Some overseas Governments are more corrupt than Fagin and are nothing more than modern day Dick Turnips.
You are persistent, but with a bit of extra effort on part of the Spanish Government then you could be eradicated, don't delude yourself that you cannot be the Spanish Government have taken measures to stop this, but the TS companies have just moved their accounts into off-shore places like Madeira.
If you think the time-share s$$m stops at ripping gullible people from their hard earned cash, then think again.
Dogwindy, you are a small cog in a big wheel of the criminal underworld, that is money laundering, selling guns and could be funding terrorism through the back door it is a lucrative market with more criminals entwined in it, than there are in the whole wing of Wormwood Scrubs.
HERE
TST's are parasites feeding off the stupid general public that hopes for something for nothing if the people wised up, then you'd be out of a job tomorrow"¦probably getting another job in one of the service industries that you condemn, but you'd have had some experience in conning the general public and no doubt would do it again, throwing all your morals out of the window.
I personally would fumigate the Canary Islands of all the pests that inhabit them .that includes TST's, cockroaches and Asian rip off merchants.
Enjoy it while you can...one day it will stop, especially when the tourists decide enough is enough and move on to somewhere else and the economy of the Islands suffer .and that is starting to happen.
The construction industry on the Canary Islands don't need time-shares because there are already concerns about environmental changes to the landscape and any new development needs the infrastructure putting into place and any new development has to be able to supply one commodity that none of us can live without"¦it's called Water.!!!!
How you or anybody else can sleep at night is beyond me, but there's a saying there's no fool like an old fool and one day you will be an old fool, guaranteed.!

Whilst there is some truth in your post, not all is as it seems.
I know very well that i am a small cog in a big wheel. Not claiming to be anything otherwise.
Very interesting article by the way. If its in The Mirror, it must be true.
One day it may stop, cant see it happening soon though, and it will not be stopped by the spanish authorities.
Timeshare exists all over the world. Americans cant get enough of it. So I doubt I'll be out of a job. In any case, its not a job where you can get sacked. Ive only known 1 person ever to get sacked (a tout that is - sales reps get sacked all the time) and that was for drug use funnily enough.
All i have been trying to point out is that not all touts are aggressive. The main reason a tout will retort with a sarcy comment of abuse is if the couple that they tried to stop was rude in the first place. Not saying that is the only reason, im saying thats the main reason.
When we approach a couple and say "Hi are you from the uk, or Hello, enjoying your holiday", it can be frustrating when the couple says "why dont you get a proper job" or "fuck off"
YES!!!!!! I really do appreciate that youve been stopped 10 zillion times already. But we have to try just in case you havent.
Never in my life have i had a german, dutch, french or any other nationality be rude as that. And they still get stopped all the time. Maybe its an english thing.
And the other point i was trying to get across, is that you do get a "free" holiday from most of the timeshare presentations.
yes its back at another timeshare resort
yes you have to agree to do another 90 minutes presentation with them on that holiday.
yes you pay for your flights.
yes you pay something like a 30 pounds admin fee.
but loads of people do this.
Im not condoning the timeshare business, not saying you should buy one, nothing like that.
Just saying that if you want you can use the timeshare system of selling to your advantage, and that touts are just working people, the majority of them are not as bad as people make out.
Just to highlight that point, people can talk about 1 or 2 bad experiences they have had with touts.
Relate that to the number of times people have been approached, maybe 100? 500? 1000?
and on top of that, im trying to help people that want an easy way to get rid of these unnavoidable touts.
A firm no thank you
Going home in an hour
Live here
much better than
Fuck off
Get a proper job
Pretending to be deaf - i mean, how lame is that.
Have a nice day by the way
lol, probably the best post ive ever read.
Only probably.?
Very interesting article by the way. If its in The Mirror, it must be true.
Probably is, but I'm more of The Times, El Pais and the Spanish Timeshare Law reader myself
HERE
and it will not be stopped by the spanish authorities.
Why not.?
Timeshare exists all over the world. Americans cant get enough of it
No comment
Have a nice day by the way
You too
Just a point, if you didn't have to resort to trying to fool the general public by scratch cards and offers of goodies or other underhand tactics "like help me fill in this questionnaire," and you were upfront, genuine and doing an honest days work, then have you ever thought that people might not be so confrontational with touts.?
its like you see opc's as scum.
More like prostitutes selling on the street
People are on holiday and do not want to be approached by opc's and just a point here, Opc's is another name used instead of timeshare touts and this then excludes them from the laws that are in situ to protect the consumer against the unscrupulous time-share companies and their sc&*S.
Time-shares by law have to give a "cooling off" period, Holiday clubs, Holiday Vacations do not"¦so that's why you call yourself an OPC and not a time-share tout.
Spain being part of the EU upholds those laws and just in case anyone thinks Tenerife is a law unto themselves, then think again.
I fall off my chair laughing when posters say things like
We do things differently in Tenerife.
What goes off in mainland Spain doesn't affect us.
We are not really part of Spain .
Yes you are and whilst you are an autonomous province setting some of your local by-laws, the Canary Islands are governed by Madrid and looking at the latest fiasco with the illegal immigrants, then whom did the Canarian Government turn to for help.?"¦Madrid.!
Tourists are fed up of the hassle and the Canarian Government know this and are now taking measures to rid the streets of touts .the Spanish Government is also aware of the fact that what was allowed a few years ago, will not be allowed by Brussels today.
The construction industry has saturated the Islands and many new developments haven't got a hope in hell of ever being occupied, plus any new development (by law) has to be able to provide a water supply, those days of building an estate and then wondering where the water is going to come from"¦are long gone.
In Tenerife, you are actually breaking the municipal law which prohibits the handing out of publicity leaflets in the streets without the authority's permission and the Arona council are leading the way to get touts off the streets, they also have the power to fine or close premises down.
The problem is, they are not dealing with respectable time-share companies.....those companies do not need to sell their product on the streets like a whore touting for business, the respectable business's belong to OTE...Organisation for Time-share in Europe....and guess where its head office is? Brussels and one in Madrid.!

PS. Instead of pretending to be deaf, Spanish or any other excuse to rid the time-share off your back.....just remind them that they are breaking the municipal law....and watch them .
Time-share tout baiting....it might just catch on
I wouldn't mind being asked........if it was once a day, or if they were polite. But you can be stopped several times in a short time. And the vast majority DO NOT take no for an answer. Do they actually think, even for one second, that their abusive persistance will persuade me to accept??
You do make a good point about other multi-nationals/professions being greedy - and I agree! But they don't hassle me on holiday when I am trying to have a relaxing time, having worked hard all year to pay for it.
what if you want to do a gym class though?
eeerm Dogwindy...............didnt you read my post
They arent actually giving out gym vouchers, like most of these scumbags they are telling lies and PRETENDING just to get you to stop...............when you stop it sure aint a gym voucher thats put into your sweaty mitt......................
Just want to say that timeshare is a great option for a lot of people, its the sales technique that leaves me cold.
It's also a good job I'm not a violent nasty person. If these people did this in Leeds, they'd likely get a punch for their troubles by some people (not that I condone it).
As for timeshare touts - every one who spoke to us either came from Manchester or had a friend/relative there - spooky or what!!!! One lady who was following us said her son was at Manchester uni doing marketing. i replied good for him in another 3 years he'll be able to get an excellent career in Tenerife doing the same job as his Mum. She soon walked off! When approached we just said "no thank you, really" and carried on walking and chatting to each other, they soon got the message and gave up. Just don't talk to them - simple as.
The best street trader was the man near the Safari Centre who cut out the most perfect cameo profiles in seconds whilst talking to you, and all for a bit of loose change.

but really. why do that?

Never been stopped by someone claiming to be working for a charity?
Do you think they are working for free?
But number one:- This thread is about Scratch Card Touts not charity workers.
Number two:- The aforementioned charity workers may well be annoying but they sure aint personally nasty and aggressive, calling you names and imitating your accent..........the reason being is that they have big aprons with their company name on them.
Usually walking on past them with a smile and a no thanks suffices........UNLIKE some of the touts.
The subject of tst's never goes away, I wonder if they ever think they are are a pest.

Hardly the same!
I dont think anyone likes those people with the clipboards that are collecting for charity either, they can be annoying, certainly for me working in a city centre having to negotiate them every morning, lunchtime and at the end of the day!

Thank you Tootsie - I was about to say the same, but you beat me to it! The two are not comparable.
Look, Dogwindy. This is not a personal attack on you, I'm sure you are very nice when you do your scratch card touting, but as you can see by our replies MOST CERTAINLY AREN'T. The tactics used by the touts we've all spoken about on here are, at the least, irritating. At worst despicable and indefenceable. Full stop.

Maybe they have been buried under the concrete while the place/streets are having a "face lift".
One can hope and dream
