Hi
Going to France for first time at Spring Bank for a week with family, (kids 12, 9, and 4), Not brilliant linguist but hopefully will get by. Found this campsite and it looks pretty good. Anybody out there with experiences of it, (good or bad.) Also anybody recomend a different one in Normandy area. (alternatively within 4 hours drive of Boulonge as I can afford the speed ferry option but not the western crossings). Prefer mobile home to tenting.
Any help
cheers
Rob
there are laods of Campsites in the at area easy drive to there from Dover / Bolougne a lot of FREE autoroutes just been built (will have to pay on some and the Pont Du Normandies)
Check out Carnac and Quiberon for places to stay
Hi I was origanally thinking of camping, with Keycamp (in one of their 'supertents' but discovered if I book direct with campsite (or asociated chain) I could get one of the mobile home / chalet options for the same price. So if I can get a mobile home / chalet will go with that option.
Planning on coming over Sat night and staying at an Etap hotel in boulonge till Sun morning then drive to site on Sunday. Limiting driving to about 4 hours cause of having kids. How long would it take to get to carnac, michelin quotes about 6hrs, so that put me off a bit. First time on French roads and all that . Any good campsites in that area.
cheers
Rob

Remember we travel the same speed as solo cars in France (135km/hr)so even tugging the caravan we make decent time Can plot a route on Autoroute if you want and give you the waymarkers
A good game for the kids once away from the Channel ports is "Spot the English car/truck" kept our kids quiet when we did the Eurowotsits camping before we caravanned
Driving "in the gutter" as someone said, is actually quite easy, especially on the Autoroutes which are quite empty until you get to a free bit around a city Personally I like the driving there and my wife will tow the caravan over there, something she will only do over here if she is forced at gunpoint the hardest bit is your first traffic Island "the wrong way round"
Campsites
Camping du Congiel
Les Menhirs
Grand Metairie
Chateau Le Brevedent (not seaside)

Hi Rob, We stayed at St Aubin Sur Mer with Camping Life holidays 3yrs ago and though the site is very well kept, clean, neat etc with a great pool, there isn't really very much in that area for young kids (ours were 8, 7 & 4 when we were there) the beach which is in walking distance was disgusting, graffiti all along the prom, also lots of dog dirt and everything was closed (not that there looked like there was much there anyway), we visited in mid May so possibly this may have had something to do with it, but after a few days of heavy rain we finally had enough and transferd to another site in the Vendee (appx 5/6hrs drive from St Aubin if I remember correctly), the Vendee area is much more suited to kids your ages, lots to do and the weather is usually a little better. St Aubin is a great stop over site when you are travelling further afield and probably brill for those wanting to visit the war memorials but other than that it is miles from anywhere and there was no on site entertainment but that could be because it was May. Try the Vendee, not much further, French roads are brill to drive on and your kids will have a much better time, at least they can go on the beach there, Cote Nacre beach I wouldn't recommend except to a dog.
It's a fairly large site with good pool complex, bar etc. I haven't stayed here but visited friends who were there and I have to say that the units did seem very cramped. There were leccy cables strewn around, criss-crossing the paths etc, which didn't impress me that much. The restaurant was ok, nothing fancy, just ok. The town of St. Aubin s/Mer is a good 10 minute walk from the site with plenty of shops/restaurants along the seafront, and the beach goes on for miles. Well within striking distance of some of the major WW2 'attractions', and only a short drive from the ferry at Caen (Ouistreham).
I'd say that there were better sites along this stretch of coastline, and friends who've been here several times now say it's gone downhill.
Cote de Nacre has been taken over in the past couple of years by the Yelloh! Village chain of campsites.
After my experience of a Yelloh campsite in 2005 then that's another one NOT to visit
Not said this before
We were on a pitch so small that the van (Bailey Pageant Series ) only just fit it was trianglular in shape and sand
so moving hte van was next to impossible, it did have water and electric but even that small I needed 2 electric cables to reach and 20 metres of hose for the water due to how it was wired and plumbed as for the drain couldn't have reached it if I'd have tried
If you want a site near Caen, have a look at Camping de la Vallee at Houlgate. Eurocamp and Keycamp both go there. We spent 10 days there 5 years ago and an overnight last summer. It's fantastically placed to explore the area and a great site.

I've heard good things about La Vallee so may get there one year
I had to post to update the reviews on here because I felt the campsite/village deserved a more recent review.
Basically, we found the campsite very clean, tidy and friendly. Very well run indeed.
The town of St Aubin is a 5 minute stroll from the campsite, and currently seems to be booming!
There are plenty of restaurants along the front, and the one time we tried to eat in the village, found everywhere booked up, thus proving things are not struggling at the moment.
The beach was clean, no graffiti to be seen, and no dog doings either.......
There are plenty of shops in the village, and the village itself looks beautiful due to all the plants and flowers everywhere.
We thought the village/campsite was a perfect base for visiting the WW2 sites, Mt St Michel and Bayeux, as well as being close to other pretty sea-side villages close by (Luc s/ Mer, Lion s/ Mer....)
So, it looks like things may have changed a wee bit since you visited (thankfully!)
Went to the Castelles St Pair site last year which was great, but fancied a change but in the same region.
my eldest some named the church 'the church of St Annoyance' - they ring constantly!!! You certainly DON'T need an alarm clock if you want to be up at 8.00!
Enjoy your holiday!
Most of the mobile homes are privately owned but can be rented out I rented by contacting the campsite owners although some people seem to rent them out themselves.
I thought site was far superior to Keycamp sites that we have stayed at in the past and the price for renting a mobile home much cheaper.
