In order to ease the strain on the Suvarnabhumi - the current airpirt, the powers that be have decided that Bangkok needs a second airport. So in the near future many domestic flights will be taking off and leaving from there.

I hope Bangkok airways does not follow- I don't fancy the commute between the two airports.
Anyone who' s been DIYing to Thailand will need to be on their toes making sure they are going to the right airport, especially if they have to connect with an international flight and they are using the Thai low-cost carriers.
And allow yourself about 4 hours to go 5 miles!! When I went there all the roads seemed to be gridlocked with traffic. Even at 3 in the morning. 
Latest news is that Bangkok wont be getting a new international airport as the airlines have now decided that they dont want to move back to Don Muang and the cracks in the runway at the old 'new airport' which were expected to take months to be fixed can actaually be patched over in an afternoon by a local builder who specialises in tarmac driveways and will do them a good deal.

However if you are flying in on a Star Alliance member airline (INVALID URL then you will be coming in to Swampyboom as they seem to have voted enmasse to remain there.
Whatever happens the on/off uncertainty and lack of concrete information wil undoubtedly persuade some people to look elsewhere for their holiday destination.

Whatever happens the on/off uncertainty and lack of concrete information wil undoubtedly persuade some people to look elsewhere for their holiday destination.
I'm not sure about people changing their destination due to uncertainty but it is certainly a bit of a mess just now. People we know of who have used the new airport almost all hate it!
Flew in beginning of Feb and must admit to being quite worried after reading about the cracks etc. Quite a smooth landing, no swerving, no problem taking off for Phuket. Quite a long trek on arrival, they would not let us into domestic area straight away so sent upstairs to international departure area, if you want to trek to main shopping area it is quite impressive, probably best selection we've seen, major credit card required!
Once through to domestic found nice outside area to eat, drink & smoke if required.
So overall not as bad as expected.

Both airports are working smoothly now.... just make sure you check your itinerary if you are connecting in BKK
So for internal flights you need to fly from the old airport??

Air Asia & Bangkok Airways have all internal flights leaving from Suvarnabhumi.
Nok Air, PB Air & One-2-go - all flights leave from Don Muang ( or Don Mueang as it is now known)
Thai Airways unsurprisingly manages to confuse everyone by having a dozen of the more popular domestic flights land at Suvarhbhumi but internal flights from out of the way places or at inconveinent times will land at Don Mueang.

Deb, could you please tell me how far one has to walk to get to connecting flights? two of our group have a little difficulty in walking.We fly into Suvarnabhumi and then change for Phuket.
