Here's the story about my holiday in the sun between 19/1/07 - 2/2/07 staying at the Lagoa Azul in Arpora.
Thursday 18th Jan 2007.
We were flying on the Mytravel flight at 1950 this evening, we live north of Newcastle and I usually set off for Manchester at about 1300 whihn usually gives us plenty of time as it takes about 2 1/2 hours. Today was different, there was high winds forecasted so we were packed and left home at 1100am. It was a pretty windy journey down to Manchester, it took 3 hours to get onto the ring-road which is where the 'fun' began.
I was on my usual route when the roads started closing and diversions where made (there were lorries being blown over) We were eventually diverted onto the M6 which immediately closed down at a high viaduct which were about to cross. We sat stationary for 4 1/2 hours eventually starting to crawl at about 1830, fully expecting to miss our flight bearing in mind we were supposed to be checking in at 1700. After frantic calls to Direct Travel and Mytravel it appeared that there was traffic mayhem around Manchester and 160 passengers were yet to check in so they were holding the desk open for as long as possible. I passed on the telephone duties back to my Mother back in Northumberland who was keeping us constantly updated, she was telling us that there were more and more people checking in so by now she was begging them to keep the desk open. We now decided to make alternative arrangements with the holiday company, the best they could come up with was 2 seats on a plane to Goa the following evening form Gatwick at a price of £189 each (bearing in mind we'd already paid that each for our seat upgrades on our original flight), this was going to turn out to be a long and expensive holiday.
We eventually got going full speed at 1930, the next problem was dropping our car off at our hotel in Altrincham and getting a taxi to the airport. It was dark, windy and rainy and I was driving in a panic ( I don't usually get stressed but this was exceptional) What happened next nearly pushed me over the edge - I took a wrong turn and ended back onto the M6 - that was it - disaster, we decided we might as well go to the airport to collect our tickets and finalise tommorrows arrangements. We parked the car at the hotel and raced at breakneck speeds to the airport in a taxi whose driver was appreciative of our plight (mother still on the phone to the check-in desk - still begging) we pulled up at the terminal.
I sent Amanda in while I sorted the cases out, as I walked around the corner I saw Amanda standing at the desk handing our passports over, the deck had shut at 2100 and it was 3 minutes past, but the wonderful staff at Mytravel re-opened the desk for us. We were rushed through to departures, as we were running I commented to the wonderful Mytravel girl who was with us that this was just like that program off the tv - she said it was but we try and get all of our passengers on!
We were the last 2 passengers to get on that flight at 2118, we heard that 10 people missed it because of the atrocious weather conditions that day
Well done Mytravel for getting as many people as possible on the plane for their much anticipated holiday and thank you very much to the rest of the passengers who waited for us.
To put things into perspective, there were around 8 people killed due to the weather that day.
We got to Goa, had a wonderful holiday and came back.
Then this happened.
We had a great flight home, got back to our hotel, went back to my car to collect our overnight bag and 4 cans of cider only to find my car was in a different position, windows smashed and dented all over - some *^%&^^s had trashed it. I had a "I love Newcastle" sticker on the back window, the vandals left a note under the windscreen wiper "love the black cats" (the nick name for sunderland football club).
We eventually got home on Saturday afternoon, and went back to work on Sunday. T really rub salt into the wound, I took my car to the garage yesterday and they gave me a Fiat Panda as a courtesy car!
Good Holiday, bad journey.
Paul & Amanda
ps, i'll do a trip report about the actual holiday to tell you about the good bits.
All I can say is what a bunch of a**halfs to do that to your car .......will you do more of your report and tell us how goa went I hope the bad start is a good end ...................colleen
What a journey to get onto the plane you had- at least you made it. YOu must have needed a drink to calm down!
I need to have a drink just reading that so glad you made the flight but what a nightmare
What a way to end your Holiday! And a Fiat Panda too
Just use a taxi , costs about £90/100, about £40 more than parking ..with the plus that you can have a few drinks on the flight coming home.
FIAT PANDA.... didn't know that there were still any on the road

wow what a story.Glad you ended up having a good holiday.Look forward to your trip report.
what a terrible thing hotxbun, have you used the hotel parking before,we are leaving our car too this year again, hubby in a panic now we are using a secure site/(so they say) is the car park not responsible?we too have used a hotel and parking before near manchester ,was it the moat house?,hope youre excess isnt too much, will youre holiday insurance cover it maybe?
When i've looked into it the car park wasn't secure, there was cctv and signs eveywhere but i've checked my booking email and there seems to be a disclaimer saying they are not responsible for other peoples property on their premises, much like a supermarket car park. At the end of the day it has cost me £150 in insurance excess and a fair bit of inconvience.
The hotel staff were very good and even apologetic, they offered some free drinks and a free breakfast. We stayed at the Cresta Court Hotel in Altrincham.
OMG what a nightmare journey you had. I was very worried when I started to read this as you said to begin with that you were going to LaGoa Azul. We're going there at the end of March, first time to that hotel, although 6th time to Goa.
as with myself thought your whole holiday was bad at first.hope you do your post on the lagoa and the whole holiday to see what you thought of it..im also going to the lagoa at the end of march-when you going miccie
Robbie, we arrive on the 23rd for 2 weeks, stayed at the MD over Christmas and New Year and that was great, and previous to that the last 4 years at Sun Village - all in Arpora
i arrive on sun 25th,3rd year running, may catch up with you at some stage and have a drink or 2...
sounds like top marks to my travel. i dread to think what would have happened if you had been with monarch
What a nightmare! So glad you had a great holiday though, and good to read some positive comments about MyTravel. We have always found them to be excellent - good on them for opening up check-in again.
We experienced a very similar nightmare journey to Manchester travelling the same day as yourself. We were supposed to fly at 3.30 with Monarch. We like yourselves were almost at the airport when all the trouble began. Nightmare! I bet we never again travel to the airport without it getting a mention! We also were diverted to more roads closed, trees across roads, at one point a couple of guys a few cars behind ran with a chain saw to cut a fallen tree for cars to get through, another smaller tree further down the same road we ended up stuck on a grass verge trying to get round that tree and had to be pushed off we also went through a flooded bridge. It was like something out of an Indianna Jones movie! At 2.30 I phoned Thomas Cook in a panic to be told the plane was due to fly on time, We cant be the only ones in this situation i said and was told most people had managed to arrive. I now know a person who booked in at 1pm was told the plane was going to be delayed. We eventually arrived at the airport at 5pm thinking the plane had left at 3.30. I cannot tell you how surprised and relieved we were when the lady from the Thomas cook desk said if we were really quick the desk was just about to close so we legged it like a couple of nutters to the check in desk rushed like hell the desk was closed as our bags went through and then we waited another 4 hours before we flew! but although people all around were moaning we couldnt care! A gin and tonic didnt touch the sides!Luckily we never drove to the airport and although it is expensive for us to taxi I am so glad we did as I think trying to drive with all that pressure would of been horrendous. Our Taxi driver was worth his weight in gold because at one point I said lets just go home thinking the plane had gone without us already and as he pointed out we couldnt go anywhere just then he said we had to at least try and he would take us to any airport in the country if it was possible. I never thought I could be pleased for a plane to be delayed but we sure were that day!
