sorry i cant help you toe, but if you google the word that may give you some idea.
hiya toe just read your post and put the word filiria in the google search bar and it came up so i read the 4th one down about filiria i have heard of this a while back i suggest you do this and read up what theyv put up on it at least youl have an idea about it maggieomx
Toe, You are right in thinking that you got filaria from mossie bites, have a look in a good medical book/dictionary and it will give you more details. But in short it is a parasitic tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes and other biting flies(well that is what my book says anyway!!!!)
Is this the same as Lymphatic Filarisis ? << not sure if I spelt that correctly.
Filaria can cause elephantitus, and this is not curable, please dont think i am suggesting you have this as i know little myself and maybe you dont get the elephantitus everytime you get Filaria?? i really have no idea but here in Goa the Government give tablets free to all residents including REsident foreign nationals they actually went round door knocking Nov / Dec with the tabs, you have to take 3 a year for 3 years and yes caused by Mozzie bites and getting more common hence the action, there are posters in all the medical clinics about this condition, we have been very concerned about it

thanks for all the replys i dont know if i should go to docs to get checked out my ankle is back to normal now what do you all think?
I would get it checked out. You can't be too careful. I work with a Dr who specialises in travel medicine, especially tropical. I will ask him tomorrow and let you know what he says, that is if you haven't had expert advice by then.
i have just checked it out on google it tells you what it is but does not say anything about if the swelling has gone i dont know if it is ok now not sure what to do thanks polly50 i will wait your reply i have been feeling a little of colour but put that down to only being back over a week in the cold
get to that doctors with your letter now- that's an order! Best to be safe.
thanks fiona i think you are right will tel now for appointment the only probs is i will proberbly have to wait about a week
I am sure everything will be fine Toe, but to put your mind at rest its best to go to the doctors. Good luck, let us know how you get on
I know the feeling But take the appt you get and then phone first thing every morning and you will probably find you'll get an earlier appt. Let us know how you get on.
hi all just phoned the docs and they said i should go straight to the hospital for blood test so will let everyone know what happens
Chilly,If the Goan government is that concerned about Filaria should we be taking precautionary medication before we travel (if it is available here in england)??Does anyone know if such medication is available here?
good luck.
My wife was walking on Candolim beach, where she actually felt something in the sand, sting her foot. There was a black mark where she was stung, and her foot swelled up. We have no idea what it was, but treatment at the Medical Centre in Candolim cleared it up in a couple of days
Good luck Toe. Let us know how you get on. I will still see what I can find out tomorrow.
