I'll have a bet now that it will hit big problems and will not move - we will all be here next year waiting for a 'deadline' date....

i wouldnt take that bet.

So it will STILL be there for our visit at the end of Mar. Mind you I think the view from Ganesh's shack would be strange without the boat.
Spike, I reckon you could be right and we may even see it next year too. I remember last year Ganesh said it was DEFINITELY scheduled to go on the high tide in May (but obviously that didn't happen either.)

Just been on YouTube and found this:

So have a look before she goes (hopefully).

Also, if you type in Candolim, etc. into the search engine on YouTube there are other video's of the area - if you are feeling homesick a good fix.

I read that the 15 march ( tomorrow ) was the date for removing her.

Anybody got an update?

Back on line now the piggin cable from the computer to the phone was US, 2 of them.

Went to look at the river princess this morning not much happening still pumping water, it looked like someone was having a good look at the propeller, probably trying to see if they can nick it. For those who don't know it should be made of bronze.

Good to see you back Lez, I guess the prop. is the most valuable bit of scrap left on the old girl, even the Ali Babas who have stripped her bare would be beaten trying to get it off !! What's your thoughts on them getting her off? I'm doubtfull if she'll pull off without breaking up after sitting rusting for six years or so. Alanp

What was that German ship in the river plate I think it was the Graft Spray, divers had the props off her only to find they where made of cast iron :shrug

We were on the beach at Candolim (Stringfellos Shack) when it was getting towards dusk on Friday 16th March and they were doing some welding around the waterline on the side farthest from the beach.
Not sure if the photos I took are any good - if they were I'll upload them (after consulting with my 'technical expert' aka hubby).

They'd been pumping water out both sides (Port & Starboard? :? ) for most of the previous 3 weeks from the top of the deck but had also started pumping just above the waterline on Saturday 17th.

They were welding at this spot a month ago, I think it gives some indication of the state of the hull at this spot. It's just another sign of the damage that has been done during the last six years or so. With each passing deadline being missed it looks more and more likely that there is a long way to go for a happy ending to this sorry tale of bungling and mismanagement Alan

i think we all understand 'the indian way', but have a little faith.

the princess will be gone by the end of april (hopefully still be here to see it moved)...with all the time and money spent over the past four months by a foreign contractor, there's no way they'll just down tools and leave it to be battered again by the monsoon from june.

now where would the logic be in that?!

Misterc,

Having faith and engineering knowledge don't compute, you see paint and rust won't weld, the patches will fall off, most of the contractor who have tended have no salvage experience what-so ever, so where is the logic in that? Ah yes the Indian way.

Before she can be moved the contractor will have to remove thousands upon thousands of tonnes of sand from bellow her hull, there is not a tug in the world that could tow her now in the state she is in. she will still be there this time next year.

When we were there last week, they had a tug with a 'scoop' thingy (Lez - maybe you can supply the actual name of this equipment  ) that seemed to be dredging sand from the front end of the ship and dumping it behind, presumably to start to free the hull up in readiness for towing it away.

hi polly

the tech name for the thingy is a dredger

and they should be dredging at the stern the back end also the heavest end even using a bucket dredger at the bow will just dig the stern in even deeper or snap her in half.

they have big problems

It's actually an Indian company that is trying to move her, unfortunatley their usual work is dredging harbours and the like round the Indian coast and they have little experience of salvage. Like Lez I was puzzled with their dredging strategy as the seem to try a little at one spot then move on to another and always on the sheltered side side nearest the shore, after six years I've a feeling that this attempt is not going to work and then what ?? Call me a cynic but I still think she'll be scrapped where she is, which I think has been the owners plan all along Alan

Probably seen the $$$ signs first then try to figure out how to move it, manual labour wont move it they require heave machinery, suction dredgers for a start, bucket dredgers are good for dredging channels then the expert salvage men because the government say it has to be moved in one piece, if it left to Buba it will be there for years to come
