I've not see that many in Tenerife but in Lanzarote one summer was particularly bad. I do spray around the door entrance, patio doors on the floor with the cucaracha spray though

Hi

I've been living here in tenerife for 14 years and have had 3 or 4 roaches a year in my apartment in all that time,

Saw one in the Bitacora last September when I first opened the wardrobe in the room  But that was the only one during the 2wks, so dont worry too much

The idea of this thread was to offer a cheap and effective way to reduce cockroaches in your room. And hopefully to inspire others to offer their methods.
Not to frighten people.

As you dont see cockies much during the day, we only use the plastercine at night. When we go out (meal / pub etc) we use the plastercine like a draught excluder outside the door to block the gap under the door.
When we get home at night we put the plastercine inside the door while we sleep.
It was while we were in Gran Canaria many years ago we notice them running under the door, another tourist in the same hotel told us about the kids plastercine.
I laughed thinking he was "taking the michael", but over the years we have never had much of a problem since using his idea.
Cockies can get inside using all sorts of methods and there is no 100% way to get shut totally.
But since using plastercine my wife does sleep more peacefully.

When you arrive at your hotel look around the reception for any plants or trees, if there is a big tree right in the centre of reception area, you know you are in trouble.

enjoy :D

In Gran Canaria on our last family hol, we were plagued with cockroaches :cry, what is it like in Tenerife regarding these lovely creatures?

Teeming with them. The better class of hotel you book though the better they are at controlling them!
I remember being down at Veronica's a few years back and the edge of the beach was alive with the little beggars.

You must have been on too much Dorada. I have lived here for 9 months and in all that time I have probably seen half a dozen or so.

However on saying that you did say that you were down at Veronicas which is a pretty dire area anyway so there are bound to be some cockroaches in one form or another there ;)

Il keep away from Veronicas then :yikes

Brother in law's just come back and he had a rather large flying one land on his t-shirt. Yuk! :yikes

We stayed in the Parque Santiago/Mare Nostrum area a couple of years ago in August. Our hotel was near the Tenerife Princess and Bitacora hotels. The streets were running alive with them in the evenings and one evening I had one land on my arm whilst sitting outside the hotel bar

You must be really unlucky as I have been to plda 12 times in the past 4 years to the Golden Corner bit and have never seen or sniffed a cockroach.

Got back a week ago. Only saw 1 in the 2 weeks we were there and that was dead.

I;ve been to Tenerife (Torviscas Playa Hotel area) about 8 times in 5 years (12 weeks in total) and have only seen 2 in the whole area. Dont worry!

must admit in 13 visits i've probably seen 2 and that was when i was 19 and stayed at Playa de fleur opposite veronicas!!
Just dont look for them - im peterifed of them so i make a point NOT to look for them otherwise i'd be a nervious wreck

Whatever these were there's good chance they weren't cockroaches as most cockroaches can't fly. In some species, the males have very rudimentary wings which means that if they fall from a height that they can glide but they can't take-off from a standing start! It's more likely that they were beetles, a good number of species of which can fly. Still unpleasant if you don't like bugs but in most cases unlikely to pose the same health risks as cockroaches and generally speaking much more likely to be found outdoors rather than infesting indoors.
